Measurement of W±-boson differential cross-sections in proton–proton collisions with low pile-up data at s=5.02 TeV and 13TeV with the ATLAS detector

High precision single-differential W±$$W^\pm $$-boson production cross-sections as a function of electron or muon transverse momentum pT$$p_\textrm{T}$$ or their pseudorapity η$$\eta $$, as well as double-differential cross-sections as functions of these variables, are measured in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=5.02$$\sqrt{s}=5.02$$ TeV and 13 TeV. The W-boson charge asymmetry as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ is also measured. The data, collected in dedicated runs at reduced instantaneous luminosity with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, correspond to integrated luminosities of 255 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 5.02 TeV and 338 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 13 TeV. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling constant αs$$\alpha _s$$ including transverse-momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using several parton distribution functions. The impact of the measured differential cross-sections as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ on the determination of these functions is studied using a profiling technique.

Correlation effects in elastic e-N2 scattering

The Schwinger multichannel formulation has been applied to study the role of electron correlation in low-energy e-N2 scattering. For the five nonresonant partial-wave channels studied here, angular correlation is found to be much more important than radial correlation. The calculated total and differential cross sections agree well with experiment except for the differential cross sections at 1.5 eV.

First Measurement Of Charged-current 1 Muon 2 Proton 0 Pion Single Differential Cross-sections On Argon-40 At 0.8 Gev Average Neutrino Energy With The MicroBooNE Detector

Constraining systematic uncertainties that arise from neutrino-nucleon cross-section modeling is critical for upcoming neutrino oscillation experiments. Neutrino interactions that lead to the ejection of 2 particles from the target nucleus, leaving the nucleus with 2 holes, are one cross-section of interest. These instances, known as 2-particle 2-hole (2p2h) states, can be produced either by neutrino interaction modes or from the influence of nuclear physics on the neutrino interaction. While there are many theoretical models that attempt to describe the nature of 2p2h states, very few experimental measurements of this process exist, making it difficult to benchmark theoretical calculations. Furthermore, no high statistic cross-section measurements of 2p2h states exist on $^{40}$Ar, the target nucleus of many current and next generation neutrino oscillation experiments. This analysis aims to address this issue by providing the first high-statistic single differential cross-section me asurements of 2p2h states. Using data collected from the first 3 years of running of the MicroBooNE experiment, we select $\nu_\mu$ charged-current interaction events that produce a single muon, 2 protons, and no pions in the final state (CC1$\mu$2p0$\pi$). The single differential cross-section is then extracted as a function of a variety of physics variables and compared to theoretical predictions from several event generator model sets.

Measurements of differential cross-sections in four-lepton events in 13 TeV proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of four-lepton differential and integrated fiducial cross-sections in events with two same-flavour, opposite-charge electron or muon pairs are presented. The data correspond to 139 fb -1 of $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions, collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (2015–2018). The final state has contributions from a number of interesting Standard Model processes that dominate in different four-lepton invariant mass regions, including single Z boson production, Higgs boson production and on-shell ZZ production, with a complex mix of interference terms, and possible contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model. The differential cross-sections include the four-lepton invariant mass inclusively, in slices of other kinematic variables, and in different lepton flavour categories. Also measured are dilepton invariant masses, transverse momenta, and angular correlation variables, in four regions of four-lepton invariant mass, each dominated by different processes. The measurements are corrected for detector effects and are compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model calculations, which are found to be consistent with the data. The Z → 4 ℓ branching fraction is extracted, giving a value of (4.41 ± 0.30) × 10 -6 . Constraints on effective field theory parameters and a model based on a spontaneously broken B – L gauge symmetry are also evaluated. Further reinterpretations can be performed with the provided information.

Semi-inclusive single-jet production in DIS at next-to-leading order in the Color Glass Condensate

Within the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory, we derive the next-to-leading order (NLO) cross-section for the single-jet semi-inclusive cross-section in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small x, for both longitudinally and transversely polarized virtual photons. We provide analytic expressions, valid at finite N c and suitable for numerical evaluation, for both the cross-section differential in rapidity and transverse momentum and the cross-section differential in rapidity only. Our NLO formulae demonstrate that the very forward rapidity regime is plagued by large double logarithmic corrections coming from phase space constraints on soft gluons close to the kinematic threshold for jet production. A joint resummation of small-x and threshold logarithms at single logarithmic accuracy is proposed to remedy the instability of the cross-section in this regime. By integrating over the single-jet phase space, we recover known results for the NLO DIS structure functions at small x, previously obtained using the optical theorem.

Measurements of the $Z$ 0 /$γ$* cross section and transverse single spin asymmetry in 510 GeV $p$ + $p$ collisions

The differential cross section for Z 0 production, measured as a function of the boson’s transverse momentum (p T ), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z 0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p + p → W/Z + X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z 0 /γ* differential cross section as a function of its p T in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z 0 /γ* total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z 0 /γ* TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Magnetic-sublevel cross sections for excitation of the n 1P levels of helium by electron impact

First-order many-body theory has been used to calculate collision-frame magnetic-sublevel differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the n 1P (n = 2,3,4,5,6) levels of helium for electrons with incident energy in the 25-500-eV range. By combining results from electron-impact differential-cross-section measurements and electron-photon coincidence measurements, experimental magnetic-sublevel cross sections have also been derived for the excitation of the 2 1P and 3 1P levels. The theory predicts a pronounced minimum for the M = 0 magnetic-sublevel differential cross section for incident electron energies around 30 eV. The theoretical results are compared to the experimental data and some other theoretical results.

Photo-Production of eta Mesons

In this work we present the GlueX experiment extensive high statistics measurements of the eta meson photo-production differential cross sections at beam energies between 3 GeV and 11.6 GeV. We compared the low energy (2.9 GeV< Ey < 5.9 GeV) differential cross section (d-sigma/d-Omega) results to previous experimental results from the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) collaboration. These (d-sigma/d-Omega) results are also compared to the theoretical isobar model EtaMAID2018 by Tiator et. al., and the Regge model by Nys et. al. The differential cross section d-sigma/dt is also presented and compared to the previous experimental results, and to the above models, in addition to a model by J. M. Laget. The high energy (6.2 GeV< Ey < 11.6 GeV) cross section results (d-sigma/d-Omega, and d-sigma/dt) are compared to the isobar model EtaMAID2018. These results will provide new constraints on eta photo-production mechanisms and high energy t-channel processes.

Measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA

The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $τ^b_1$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $τ^b_1$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA ep collider in the years 2003–2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 319 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb -1 . Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $τ^b_1$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity y, in the kinematic region $Q^2$ > 150 GeV 2 . Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $τ^b_1$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $τ^b_1$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and y. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}$($α^3_s$) are available for $τ^b_1$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}$($α^2_s$). These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

Studies of elastic e-NH3 collisions

Differential and momentum-transfer cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons by NH3 have been obtained for collision energies of between 2.5 and 20 eV using the fixed-nuclei static-exchange approximation of the Schwinger variational principle. At intermediate and large scattering angles, good agreement is found between calculated and relative experimental cross sections. The differential cross sections reveal evidence of a weak d-wave enhancement around 8 eV.

Progress toward double-differential cross-section measurements of single charged-pion production in charged current muon neutrino interactions on argon with SBND

Resonant neutrino–nucleus processes constitute a significant portion of neutrino interactions in the few-GeV energy region. Charged-current interactions with a muon and one single charged pion in the final state (CC1$\pi$) are primarily sensitive to resonant processes, while also receiving contributions from non-resonant processes and being strongly affected by nuclear effects and final-state interactions. A precise understanding of this channel is essential for improving neutrino interaction models and reducing systematic uncertainties in oscillation measurements. The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermilab has collected the largest neutrino–argon dataset to date, providing an excellent opportunity to study CC1$\pi$ interactions on argon. This analysis aims to improve existing single-differential cross-section measurements by reporting results in a variety of kinematic variables and to perform the first double-differential CC1$\pi$ cross-section measurement on argon, using novel techniques for pion energy reconstruction.

Measurement of three-dimensional inclusive muon-neutrino charged-current cross sections on argon with the MicroBooNE detector

We report the measurement of the triple-differential cross section d 3 σ/dE vis d cos(θ μ )dP μ for inclusive muon-neutrino charged-current scattering on argon. This measurement utilizes data from 6.4 x 10 20 protons on target of exposure collected using the MicroBooNE liquid argon time projection chamber located along the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam with a mean neutrino energy of approximately 0.8 GeV. The mapping from reconstructed kinematics to truth quantities is validated within uncertainties by comparing the distribution of reconstructed hadronic energy in data to that of the model prediction in different muon scattering angle bins after applying a conditional constraint from the muon momentum distribution in data. The success of this validation provides confidence that the energy transfer in the MicroBooNE detector is well-modeled within simulation uncertainties, enabling a reliable unfolding to a triple-differential cross section defined at the nominal neutrino flux over muon momentum, muon scattering angle, and visible neutrino energy. This validation not only supports accurate cross-section extraction, but also establishes a critical foundation for tuning interaction models used in future neutrino oscillation measurements. The unfolded measurement covers an extensive phase space, providing a wealth of information useful for future liquid argon time projection chamber experiments measuring neutrino oscillations. Comparisons against a number of commonly used model predictions are included and their performance in different parts of the available phase-space is discussed.

Studies of electron-polyatomic-molecule collisions Applications to e-CH4

The first application of the Schwinger multichannel formulation to low-energy electron collisions with a nonlinear polyatomic target is reported. Integral and differential cross sections are obtained for e-CH4 collisions from 3 to 20 eV at the static-plus-exchange interaction level. In these studies, the exchange potential is directly evaluated and not approximated by local models. An interesting feature of the small-angle differential cross section is ascribed to polarization effects and not reproduced at the static-plus-exchange level. These differential cross sections are found to be in reasonable agreement with existing measurements at 7.5 eV and higher energies.

Neutron elastic and inelastic cross section measurements on silicon from 0.8--8 MeV

Neutron elastic and inelastic scattering differential cross sections were measured at angles between 30° and 155° with incident neutron energies between 0.8 and 8 MeV. The measured differential scattering cross sections are compared to existing measurements and the ENDF/B-VIII.0, the JEFF-3.3, and the JENDL-4.0 data evaluations, as well as theoretical calculations from the TALYS-1.95 nuclear reaction code. Our results are reasonably well described by values from the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF-3.3 compilations. However, below 4 MeV, our backward-angle elastic scattering results tend to be lower than database/calculated values, suggesting that less recoil damage would occur than expected. Above 6 MeV, larger backward-angle cross sections are observed suggesting the opposite. Deexcitation γ rays produced in the inelastic scattering process were also studied for neutron energies between 1.9 and 4.5 MeV. Inelastic neutron scattering cross sections deduced from 28 Si(n,n1γ) γ-ray projection cross sections confirm our 28 Si(n,n1) results. To the extent that data from GELINA and our experimental results can be compared, we have excellent agreement between the inelastic neutron scattering cross sections.

DDFRG2: Double-Differential FRaGmentation Model with Pion Production

A set of Double-Differential FRaGmentation (DDFRG) models for production of fragments from nucleon-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, relevant to space radiation, is currently being developed. DDFRG1 was a previous model developed for production of protons and light ions. A new model for pion production is developed in the present work and is called DDFRG2, which is based upon thermal production of pions from a central fireball source. The Lorentzinvariant double-differential cross section is calculated in the central fireball frame, and is Lorentz transformed to the laboratory frame, which results in a closed-form analytic formula involving no numerical integration, and which can be run very efficiently in radiation transport codes. The Lorentz-invariant double-differential cross section is then integrated over angle to give the singledifferential energy spectral distribution. Two versions of the DDFRG2 pion production are developed, namely DDFRG2-SIMPLE and DDFRG2-FULL. Both versions produce pion production Lorentz-invariant double-differential cross sections and also pion production single-differential spectral (energy) distributions. The SIMPLE version contains only one adjustable parameter. The FULL version contains three additional adjustable parameters. Both DDFRG2 versions are compared to over 1,000 data points. The SIMPLE version describes the p + 12 C → π − much better than the current HZETRN pion model. For other reactions, the SIMPLE version is of comparable quality to the current HZETRN pion model compared to data. For both the p + 12 C → π − reaction and all other reactions, DDFRG2-FULL describes the data much more accurately than the current HZETRN pion model.

Energy dependence of \(\phi \) meson production at forward rapidity in pp collisions at the LHC

The production of Φ mesons has been studied in pp collisions at LHC energies with the ALICE detector via the dimuon decay channel in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4. Measurements of the differential cross section d 2 σ / dydpT are presented as a function of the transverse momentum (p T ) at the center-of-mass energies √s = 5.02, 8 and 13 TeV and compared with the ALICE results at midrapidity. The differential cross sections at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV are also studied in several rapidity intervals as a function of p T , and as a function of rapidity in three p T intervals. A hardening of the p T -differential cross section with the collision energy is observed, while, for a given energy, p T spectra soften with increasing rapidity and, conversely, rapidity distributions get slightly narrower at increasing p T . The new results, complementing the published measurements at √s = 2.76 and 7 TeV, allow one to establish the energy dependence of Φ meson production and to compare the measured cross sections with phenomenological models. None of the considered models manages to describe the evolution of the cross section with p T and rapidity at all the energies.

Differential elastic scattering cross sections for 54.9eV positrons incident on helium

Absolute differential elastic scattering cross sections measured with the 3-m, high resolution, time-of-flight spectrometer are presented for 54.9eV positrons incident on He. Five point moving average differential cross sections are plotted against average scattering angles which range from 14 to 36 deg. Also the averages of five differential cross sections which have adjacent values of scattering angle are plotted versus the corresponding averages of the scattering angles. The curve fitted to these data is shaped like the theoretical curve but has its minimum and its maximum at scattering angles that are about 4 deg higher and 15 deg lower respectively than predicted by theory.
