Decay amplitudes to three hadrons from finite-volume matrix elements

We derive relations between finite-volume matrix elements and infinite-volume decay amplitudes, for processes with three spinless, degenerate and either identical or non-identical particles in the final state. This generalizes the Lellouch-Lüscher relation for two-particle decays and provides a strategy for extracting three-hadron decay amplitudes using lattice QCD. Unlike for two particles, even in the simplest approximation, one must solve integral equations to obtain the physical decay amplitude, a consequence of the nontrivial finite-state interactions. We first derive the result in a simplified theory with three identical particles, and then present the generalizations needed to study phenomenologically relevant three-pion decays. The specific processes we discuss are the CP-violating K → 3π weak decay, the isospin-breaking η → 3π QCD transition, and the electromagnetic γ* → 3π amplitudes that enter the calculation of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to muonic g - 2.

Search for single production of a vector-like T quark decaying to a top quark and a Z boson in the final state with jets and missing transverse momentum at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

A search is presented for single production of a vector-like T quark with charge 2/3 e, in the decay channel featuring a top quark and a Z boson, with the top quark decaying hadronically and the Z boson decaying to neutrinos. The search uses data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 recorded at the CERN LHC in 2016–2018. The search is sensitive to a T quark mass between 0.6 and 1.8 TeV with decay widths ranging from negligibly small up to 30% of the T quark mass. Reconstruction strategies for the top quark are based on the degree of Lorentz boosting of its final state. At 95% confidence level, the upper limit on the product of the cross section and branching fraction for a T quark of small decay width varies between 15 and 602 fb, depending on its mass. For a T quark with decay widths between 10 and 30% of its mass, this upper limit ranges between 16 and 836 fb. For most of the studied range, the results provide the best limits to date. This is the first search for single T quark production based on the full Run 2 data set of the LHC.

Search for decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a Z boson and a $\rho$ or $\phi$ meson

Decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a Z boson and a ρ$^{0}$(770) or ϕ(1020) meson are searched for using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV. The analysed data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. Events are selected in which the Z boson decays into a pair of electrons or a pair of muons, and the ρ and ϕ mesons decay into pairs of pions and kaons, respectively. No significant excess above the background model is observed. As different polarization states are possible for the decay products of the Z boson and ρ or ϕ mesons, affecting the signal acceptance, scenarios in which the decays are longitudinally or transversely polarized are considered. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson branching fractions into Zρ and Zϕ are determined to be 1.04–1.31% and 0.31–0.40%, respectively, where the ranges reflect the considered polarization scenarios; these values are 740–940 and 730–950 times larger than the respective standard model expectations. These results constitute the first experimental limits on the two decay channels.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for neutral long-lived particles that decay into displaced jets in the ATLAS calorimeter in association with leptons or jets using pp collisions at $\sqrt{\textrm{s}}$ = 13 TeV

A search for neutral long-lived particles (LLPs) decaying in the ATLAS hadronic calorimeter using 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV delivered by the LHC is presented. The analysis is composed of three channels. The first targets pair-produced LLPs, where at least one LLP is produced with sufficiently low boost that its decay products can be resolved as separate jets. The second and third channels target LLPs respectively produced in association with a W or Z boson that decays leptonically. In each channel, different search regions target different kinematic regimes, to cover a broad range of LLP mass hypotheses and models. No excesses of events relative to the background predictions are observed. Higgs boson branching fractions to pairs of hadronically decaying neutral LLPs larger than 1% are excluded at 95% confidence level for proper decay lengths in the range of 30 cm to 4.5 m depending on the LLP mass, a factor of three improvement on previous searches in the hadronic calorimeter. The production of long-lived dark photons in association with a Z boson with cross-sections above 0.1 pb is excluded for dark photon mean proper decay lengths in the range of 20 cm to 50 m, improving previous ATLAS results by an order of magnitude. Finally, long-lived photo-phobic axion-like particle models are probed for the first time by ATLAS, with production cross-sections above 0.1 pb excluded in the 0.1 mm to 10 m range.

Updated search for $ {B}_c^{+} $ decays to two charm mesons

A data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment has been analysed to search for B c + → D s ∗ + — D ∗ 0 decays. The decays are fully or partially reconstructed, where one or two missing neutral pions or photons from the decay of an excited charm meson are allowed. Upper limits for the branching fractions, normalised to B + decays to final states with similar topologies, are obtained for sixteen $ {B}_c^{+} $ decay modes. For the decay $ {B}_c^{+}\to {D}_s^{+}{\overline{D}}^0 $, an excess with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations is found.

Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=44 Isobars

Experimental nuclear spectroscopic data are evaluated for 12 known nuclides of mass number A=44 (Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn). Detailed evaluated information are presented for each reaction and decay. Recommended values combining all available data are provided for all spectroscopic properties of each level, γ-ray, and decay radiation. No excited states have yet been identified in 44 Si, 44 P, 44 Cr, and 44 Mn. Information for excited states in 44 Cl and 44 V are limited. Nuclides of 44 S, 44 Ar and 44 K have been studied via only a few reactions and decays, while 44 Ca, 44 Sc and 44 Ti are the most investigated nuclides through various reactions and decays. Evaluators note that the half-life of the g.s. of 44 S has been measured independently, with fairly good statistics, in three references, most precise being 100 ms 1 by 2004Gr20, but this value is in disagreement with the values of 125.5 ms 25 and 119 ms 6 by 2022Tr03, and 123 ms 10 by 1995So03. We adopted the unweighted average of this discrepant dataset. Another outstanding issue is that of the β + -delayed proton decay of 44 Cr g.s. to 44 V, where the T=2, 0 + IAS state in 44 V is expected to be strongly populated by a superallowed β transition, but has not been definitely identified as discussed in detail by 2020Fu05. A detailed study of 44 Cr decay is required to unravel the status of the T=2, 0 + IAS state in 44 V. Furthermore, this work supersedes earlier ENSDF evaluations of A=44 by 2011Ch39 and 1999Ca45.

New approach to precisely measure γ-ray intensities for long-lived fission products, with results for the decay of 95 Zr

For many fission products, the rays emitted following decay provide an easily-detectable signature that can be used to identify their quantities and distributions in a sample. As a result, γ-ray spectroscopy is often exploited to study fission-product yields, provided sufficiently accurate information on the γ-ray intensity is available. However, in many cases, the uncertainties in the existing nuclear data are large enough that they compromise the precision achievable for modern experiments and applications. To address this need, we have developed a new experimental method that is well suited to precisely measure absolute γ-ray intensities in the β decay of long-lived fission products. The approach involves the production of a radiopure sample by implantation of a mass-separated ion beam from the CAlifornium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility on a thin carbon foil. The emitted β-decay radiation is detected with a 4π gas proportional counter and a meticulously efficiency-calibrated high-purity germanium (HPGe) detector. As a first measurement to demonstrate the approach, we studied the absolute γ-ray intensities of the strongest transitions following the β decay of 95 Zr and its decay-daughter 95 Nb, and determined them to fractional precisions of better than 1–2%. In addition, with a larger sample of activity produced through neutron irradiation of an isotopically-enriched Zr foil, we performed a high-precision measurement of the relative γ-ray intensities following the decay of 95 Zr with just the HPGe detector. Here, the sample-production method at CARIBU and the coincidence detection approach demonstrated here can be applied to study fission products with half-lives longer than a day, which includes isotopes important not only for nuclear-energy and national-security applications, but also for medical-isotope research and environmental monitoring.

Search for rare 3-$α$ decays in the region of the Hoyle state of 12 C

We performed a refined analysis of the data collected with the CHIMERA detector with the aim of searching rare 3-$α$ decay modes near the Hoyle state of 12 C. In particular we investigated the direct and sequential decay modes of the Hoyle state including also the recently suggested Efimov state. The comparison of selected events with simulations constrains the precision achievable with measurements in different experimental conditions. We observe good sensitivities to different decay scenarios also in the CHIMERA spherical region notwithstanding its limited angular resolution. Furthermore, the search for the decay of the Efimov state in 12 C was performed by using new selection strategies as suggested by simulations. The obtained results are not conclusive, however, we are able to exclude the presence of a sequential decay of this state, while our data could be compatible with its direct decay.

Structure of high-lying levels populated in the 96 Y → 96 Zr β decay

The nature of the high-lying final levels of the 96 Y gs β decay, one of the three most important contributors to the high-energy reactor antineutrino spectrum, has been investigated in high-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy following the β decay as well as in a campaign of inelastic photon scattering experiments. The comprehensive approach establishes 1 - levels associated with the Pygmy Dipole Resonance as high-lying final levels in the β decay. Branching ratios extracted from β decay complement photon scattering and allow the absolute E1 excitation strength to be determined for levels populated in both reactions. The combined data represents a comprehensive approach to the wavefunction of the 1 - levels below the Qβ value, which are investigated in the Quasiparticle Phonon Model. The calculations reveal that the components populated in β decay contribute only with small amplitudes to the complex wavefunction of these 1 - levels. A comparison of the β decay results to data from total absorption γ -ray spectroscopy demonstrates a good agreement between both measurements.

Field control of quasiparticle decay in a quantum antiferromagnet

Dynamics in a quantum material is described by quantized collective motion: a quasiparticle. The single-quasiparticle description is useful for a basic understanding of the system, whereas a phenomenon beyond the simple description such as quasiparticle decay which affects the current carried by the quasiparticle is an intriguing topic. The instability of the quasiparticle is phenomenologically determined by the magnitude of the repulsive interaction between a single quasiparticle and the two-quasiparticle continuum. Although the phenomenon has been studied in several materials, thermodynamic tuning of the quasiparticle decay in a single material has not yet been investigated. Here we show, by using neutron scattering, magnetic field control of the magnon decay in a quantum antiferromagnet RbFeCl 3 , where the interaction between the magnon and continuum is tuned by the field. At low fields where the interaction is small, the single magnon decay process is observed. In contrast, at high fields where the interaction exceeds a critical magnitude, the magnon is pushed downwards in energy and its lifetime increases. Our study demonstrates that field control of quasiparticle decay is possible in the system where the two-quasiparticle continuum covers wide momentum-energy space, and the phenomenon of the magnon avoiding decay is ubiquitous.

Resonant Auger decay of dissociating CH 3 I near the I 4d threshold

Resonant Auger processes provide a unique perspective on electronic interactions and excited vibrational and electronic states of molecular ions. Here, new data are presented on the resonant Auger decay of excited CH 3 I in the region just below the I 4d -1 ionization threshold. The resonances include the Rydberg series converging to the five spin–orbit and ligand-field split CH 3 I (I 4d -1 ) thresholds, as well as resonances corresponding to excitation from the I 4d 5/2,3/2 orbitals into the σ* lowest unoccupied molecular orbital. This study focuses on participator decay that populates the lowest lying states of CH 3 I + , in particular, the X̃ 2 E 3/2 and 2 E 1/2 states, and on spectator decay that populates the lowest-lying (CH 3 I 2+ )σ* states of CH 3 I + . The CH 3 I (I 4d -1 )σ* resonances are broad, and dissociation to CH 3 + I competes with the autoionization of the core-excited states. Auger decay as the molecule dissociates produces a photoelectron spectrum with a long progression (up to v 3 + ~ 25) in the C–I stretching mode of the X̃ 2 E 3/2 and 2 E 1/2 states, providing insights into the shape of the dissociative core-excited surface. Further, the observed spectator decay processes indicate that CH 3 I + is formed on the repulsive wall of the lower-lying (CH 3 I 2+ )σ* potentials, and the photon-energy dependence of the processes provides insights into the relative slopes of the (4d -1 )σ* and (CH 3 I 2+ )σ* potential surfaces. Data are also presented for the spectator decay of higher lying CH 3 I (I 4d -1 )nl Rydberg resonances. Photoelectron angular distributions for the resonant Auger processes provide additional information that helps distinguish these processes from the direct ionization signal.

Warm Decaying Dark Matter and the Hubble Tension

If a fraction of the dark matter is unstable and decays into dark radiation at around the time of matter-radiation equality, it could impact the expansion history of the universe in a way that helps to ameliorate the long-standing tension between the locally measured value of the Hubble constant and the value inferred from measurements of the cosmic microwave background and baryon acoustic oscillations (assuming standard ΛCDM cosmology). If this component of decaying dark matter is cold, however, it will modify the evolution of the gravitational potentials, leading to inconsistencies with these same data sets. With this in mind, we consider here a component of decaying warm dark matter, with a free-streaming length that is long enough to remain consistent with existing data. We study the background and perturbation evolution of warm decaying dark matter, and use cosmological data to constrain the mass, abundance and decay rate of such a particle. We find that a component of warm decaying dark matter can significantly reduce the tension between local and cosmological determinations of the Hubble constant.

Measurement of 𝐵 meson production fraction ratios in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using open-charm and charmonium decays

Production fraction ratios of 𝐵 + , 𝐵 0 , and 𝐵$^{0}_{𝑠}$ mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using a special dataset recorded in 2018 with high-rate triggers designed to collect an unbiased sample of 1⁢010 𝑏 hadrons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. These data allow the study of the open-charm decays of 𝐵 mesons (𝐵 (𝑠) → 𝜋⁢𝐷 (𝑠) ) where the 𝐷 meson decays into fully hadronic final states. By utilizing known branching fractions and precise theoretical calculations, production fraction ratios as functions of 𝐵 meson transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) are measured using open-charm decays in the kinematic range of 8 < 𝑝 T < 60 GeV and |𝑦| <2.25. In addition, the same dataset is used to measure the relative production fraction ratios with the charmonium decay channels [𝐵 (𝑠) →𝑋⁢𝐽/𝜓 with 𝑋 indicating a 𝐾 + , 𝐾*(892) 0 , or 𝜙⁡(1020) meson] where the 𝐽/𝜓 meson decays into a pair of muons. The open-charm results are used to normalize the relative production fraction ratios obtained from the charmonium samples. Measurements of the ratios of branching fractions of 𝐵 meson decays to charmonium and open-charm final states are also reported, which will improve the world-average values of these ratios. Finally, we test isospin invariance in 𝐵 meson production in proton-proton collisions and observe that it holds within the experimental precision.

Decay rates of almost strong modes in Floquet spin chains beyond Fermi's Golden Rule

The stability and dynamics of almost strong zero and π modes in weakly nonintegrable Floquet spin chains are investigated. Such modes can also be viewed as localized Majorana modes at the edge of a topological superconductor. Perturbation theory in the strength of integrability breaking interaction J z is employed to estimate the decay rates of these modes, and compared to decay rates obtained from exact diagonalization. Here, the structure of the perturbation theory and thus the lifetime of the modes is governed by the conservation of quasienergy modulo 2π/T, where T is the period of the Floquet system. If there are 4n – 1 bulk excitations whose quasienergies add up to zero (or π/T for a π mode), one obtains a decay channel of the Majorana mode with a decay rate proportional to $J$$^{2n}_{z}$. Thus the lifetime is sensitively controlled by the width of the single-particle Floquet bands. For regimes where the decay rates are quadratic in J z , an analytic expression for the decay rate in terms of an infinite temperature autocorrelation function of the integrable model is derived, and shown to agree well with exact diagonalization.

Direct C P violation in charmless three-body decays of B ± mesons

Measurements of CP asymmetries in charmless three-body decays of B ± mesons are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb –1 . The previously observed CP asymmetry in B ± →π ± ⁢K + K – decays is confirmed, and CP asymmetries are observed with a significance of more than five standard deviations in the B ± →π ± π + ⁢π – and B ± →K ± ⁢K + ⁢K – decays, while the CP asymmetry of B ± →K ± ⁢π + ⁢π – decays is confirmed to be compatible with zero. The distributions of these asymmetries are also studied as a function of the three-body phase space and suggest contributions from rescattering and resonance interference processes. An indication of the presence of the decays B ± →π ± ⁢χ c⁢0 ⁡(1⁢P) in both B ± →π ± π + ⁢π – and B ± →π ± ⁢K + ⁢K – decays is observed, as is CP violation involving these amplitudes.

Search for long-lived particles decaying in the CMS muon detectors in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) decaying in the CMS muon detectors is presented. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 , recorded at the LHC in 2016–2018, is used. The decays of LLPs are reconstructed as high multiplicity clusters of hits in the muon detectors. In the context of twin Higgs models, the search is sensitive to LLP masses from 0.4 to 55 GeV and a broad range of LLP decay modes, including decays to hadrons, τ leptons, electrons, or photons. No excess of events above the standard model background is observed. The most stringent limits to date from LHC data are set on the branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to a pair of LLPs with masses below 10 GeV. This search also provides the best limits for various intervals of LLP proper decay length and mass. Finally, this search sets the first limits at the LHC on a dark quantum chromodynamic sector whose particles couple to the Higgs boson through gluon, Higgs boson, photon, vector, and dark-photon portals, and is sensitive to branching fractions of the Higgs boson to dark quarks as low as 2 × 10 − 3 . © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Observation of η c ( 1 S , 2 S ) and χ c J decays to 2 ( π + π − ) η via ψ ( 3686 ) radiative transitions

Based on ( 2712.4 ± 14.1 ) × 10 6 ψ ( 3686 ) decays collected with the BESIII detector, we have observed, for the first time, the hadronic decays of S- and P-wave charmonium states into 2 ( π + π − ) η via radiative transitions from ψ ( 3686 ) . The branching fraction of the decay η c ( 1 S ) → 2 ( π + π − ) η has a significant dependence on the interference pattern between η c ( 1 S ) and non- η c ( 1 S ) processes. We measure it in both the destructive and constructive interference scenarios for the first time. The mass and width of the η c ( 1 S ) are measured to be M = ( 2984.14 ± 0.13 ± 0.38 ) MeV / c 2 and Γ = ( 28.82 ± 0.11 ± 0.82 ) MeV , respectively. Clear signals for the decays of the χ c J ( J = 0 , 1 , 2 ) and the η c ( 2 S ) to 2 ( π + π − ) η are also observed for the first time, and the corresponding branching fractions are measured. The ratio of the branching fractions between the η c ( 2 S ) and η c ( 1 S ) decays is significantly lower than the theoretical prediction, which might suggest different dynamics in their decays. Improved Measurement of C P Violation Parameters in B s 0 → J / ψ K + K − Decays in the Vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) Resonance

The decay-time-dependent C P asymmetry in B s 0 → J / ψ ( → μ + μ − ) K + K − decays is measured using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb − 1 , collected with the LHCb detector at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Using a sample of approximately 349 000 B s 0 signal decays with an invariant K + K − mass in the vicinity of the ϕ ( 1020 ) resonance, the C P -violating phase ϕ s is measured, along with the difference in decay widths of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B s 0 − B ¯ s 0 system, Δ Γ s , and the difference of the average B s 0 and B 0 meson decay widths, Γ s − Γ d . The values obtained are ϕ s = − 0.039 ± 0.022 ± 0.006 rad , Δ Γ s = 0.0845 ± 0.0044 ± 0.0024 ps − 1 , and Γ s − Γ d = − 0.005 6 − 0.0015 + 0.0013 ± 0.0014 ps − 1 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements to date and are consistent with expectations based on the Standard Model and with the previous LHCb analyses of this decay. These results are combined with previous independent LHCb measurements. The phase ϕ s is also measured independently for each polarization state of the K + K − system and shows no evidence for polarization dependence. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN
