Influence of electronic transport on electrochemical performance of (Cu,Mn) 3 O 4 solid oxide fuel cell cathodes

Alkaline Earth free spinel oxides provide a potential benefit over Sr-doped perovskite-based materials commonly used as electrodes in high-temperature electrochemical energy conversion devices, e.g., solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Sr-segregation is a known issue leading to performance degradation. In this study, Cu x Mn 3-x O 4 (x = 1, 1.2, and 1.5) porous electrodes were examined as SOFC cathodes using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to investigate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics in relation to the material's intrinsic conductivity, the extrinsic electrode structure, and the cell test design. Similar to the electronic conducting (La,Sr)MnO 3 SOFC cathodes, the ORR kinetics of Cu x Mn 3-x O 4 spinel electrodes was governed by the oxygen adsorption and diffusion at the particle surface as well as the charge transfer at the triple phase boundaries. The overall electrode polarization resistance was highly dependent on contact density with the metallic current collector, active material particle connectivity, electrode thickness, and the intrinsic electronic materials conductivity. Here, we describe the importance of effective electronic charge transport parallel to the electrode surface in maximizing the electrochemically active electrode volume and enhancing electrode performance. We discuss an approach to optimize cell and electrode design with respect to active materials properties. This aspect is critical to ensure reliable evaluation of new materials, since laboratory-scale button-cells typically exhibit a high degree of electrode microstructure (e.g. porosity, thickness) and electrical contact density variation from sample to sample.

Effects of oxidation and roughness on Cu contact resistance from 4 to 290 K

Knowledge of the factors influencing contact resistance is important for optimizing system design in cryogenic applications. In space cryogenics, indirect cooling of infrared components is the primary concern. The presence of bolted joints results in contact resistances which can dominate all other contributions to the overall heat transfer rate. Here, thermal and electrical contact resistances measured between 4 K and 290 K for a series of bolted OFHC Cu contacts are reported. Surface roughness is found to have little effect on the overall contact resistance within the experimental limits, while oxidation can increase the contact resistance by as much as a factor of 100. Thermal and electrical contact resistances measured on the same contact show that the contact resistance temperature dependence does not follow the bulk dependence. For example, the residual resistance ratio (RRR) of the OFHC Cu is 110, but for contacts made from this material, the RRR is about two.

Porous Cu 2 BaSn(S,Se) 4 Film as a Photocathode Using Non-Toxic Solvent and a Ball-Milling Approach

Cu 2 BaSn(S,Se) 4 (CBTSSe) has been proposed as an alternative to Cu 2 ZnSn(S,Se) 4 (CZTSSe) for solar absorbers due to its reduced propensity for antisite disorder and band tailing, while maintaining the desirable characteristics of band gap tunability, earth-abundance, and low toxicity constituent metals. However, current film deposition methods require high-vacuum conditions or toxic solvents, less desirable features for prospective large-scale production. Here, ball milling is demonstrated as a route towards a scalable processing method for CBTSSe, using a precursor ink consisting of common elements Cu 2 S, BaS, Sn, and S in low-toxicity ethanol. A final film with a thickness and average grain size on the order of 1 µm was synthesized with a band gap of 1.56 eV, corresponding to a Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (x ≈ 3) stoichiometry. A porous CBTSSe photocathode with Pt/TiO 2 /CdS overlayers was fabricated to demonstrate the photocurrent-generating capabilities of the film, yielding current densities of as high as 5.54 mA/cm 2 at 0 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (V/RHE) .

Colloidal synthesis and charge carrier dynamics of Cs 4 Cd 1-x Cu x Sb 2 Cl 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) layered double perovskite nanocrystals

The toxicity and instability of lead-based metal halide perovskites are the two main obstacles that prevent perovskite materials from implementation in applications. Recently, layered double perovskites (LDPs) emerge as a new family of perovskite materials which provide a new route to solve these problems by lead-component replacement and reduction of crystal structure dimensionality. However, LDP nanocrystals (NCs) have been rarely studied, limiting the further property exploration and application realization. In this work, we report the colloidal synthesis of a series of Cs 4 Cd 1-x Cu x Sb 2 Cl 12 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) LDP NCs by tuning the stoichiometry of metal precursors. The composition-structure-property relationships of the resulting LDP NCs are studied through materials characterizations, density functional theory calculations, and transient-absorption spectroscopy. In addition, we demonstrate that high-performance high-speed photodetectors can be fabricated using the colloidal LDP NCs through solution-processing. This work premises further expansion of such LDP-based materials for both fundamental studies and application integrations.

The Mechanisms of Dispersion Strengthening and Fracture in Al-based XD (TM) Alloys

The influence of reinforcement size, volume fraction, and matrix deformation behavior on room and elevated temperature strength, and the fracture toughness of metal matrix composites of both pure aluminum and Al(4 percent)Cu(1.5 percent)Mg with 0 to 15 vol percent TiB2 were examined. Higher TiB2 volume fractions increased the tensile yield strength both at room and elevated temperatures, and reduced the elongation to fracture. Tensile tests also indicate that small particles provided a greater increase in strength for a given volume fraction than larger particles, whereas elongation to fracture appeared to be insensitive to reinforcement size. The fracture toughness of the Al(4 percent)Cu(1.5 percent)Mg alloys decreased rapidly with TiB2 additions of 0 to 5 vol percent and more slowly with TiB2 additions of 5 to 15 vol percent. Fracture toughness appears to be independent of TiB2 particle size. The isothermal-aging response of the precipitation strengthened Al(4 percent)Cu(1.5 percent)Mg alloys was not altered by the presence of TiB2.

Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn): High Chemical Flexibility Resulting in Good Nonlinear-Optical Properties

Seven acentric sulfides Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) were grown by a high-temperature salt flux method. The crystal structures of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with the aid of solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) compounds are isostructural and crystallize in the Ba 6 Ag 4 Sn 4 S 16 structure type. The Sn-containing compound exhibits high structural similarity to Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) with the presence of an interstitial atomic position partially occupied by Sn atoms. The chemical bonding characteristics of Ba 6 (Cu 2.9 Sn 0.4 )Sn 4 S 16 were understood with electron localization function calculations coupled with crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations. The Ba–S and Cu–S interactions are dominantly ionic, but the Sn–S interactions consist of strong covalent bonding characteristics in Ba 6 (Cu 2.9 Sn 0.4 )Sn 4 S 16 . The monovalent Cu atoms, mixed with certain metals with various oxidation states, significantly shift the optical properties of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi) compounds. This results in a good balance between the second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response and laser damage threshold (LDT). Ba 6 (Cu 1.9 Zn 1.1 )Sn 4 S 16 possesses a high SHG response and a high LDT of 2.8 × AGS and 3 × AGS, respectively. Here, a density functional theory calculation revealed that CuS 4 and SnS 4 tetrahedra significantly contribute to the SHG response in Ba 6 (Cu 2 Mg)Sn 4 S 16 , which also confirmed that CuS 4 tetrahedra are crucial for the stability and optical properties of the Ba 6 (Cu x Z y )Sn 4 S 16 (Z = Mg, Mn, Zn, Cd, In, Bi, Sn) compounds revealed by electronic structure analysis.

Strongly Correlated Quantum Spin Liquids versus Heavy Fermion Metals: A Review

This review considers the topological fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) that explains the complex behavior of strongly correlated Fermi systems, such as frustrated insulators with quantum spin liquid and heavy fermion metals. The review contrasts theoretical consideration with recent experimental data collected on both heavy fermion metals (HF) and frustrated insulators. Such a method allows to understand experimental data. We also consider experimental data collected on quantum spin liquid in Lu 3 Cu 2 Sb 3 O 14 and quasi-one dimensional (1D) quantum spin liquid in both YbAlO 3 and Cu(C 4 H 4 N 2 )(NO 3 ) 2 with the aim to establish a sound theoretical explanation for the observed scaling laws, Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) and non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior exhibited by these frustrated insulators. The recent experimental data on the heavy-fermion metal α-YbAl 1-x Fe x B 4 , with x=0.014, and on its sister compounds β-YbAlB 4 and YbCo 2 Ge 4 , carried out under the application of magnetic field as a control parameter are analyzed. We show that the thermodynamic and transport properties as well as the empirical scaling laws follow from the fermion condensation theory. We explain how both the similarity and the difference in the thermodynamic and transport properties of α-YbAl 1-x Fe x B 4 and in its sister compounds β-YbAlB 4 and YbCo 2 Ge 4 emerge, as well as establish connection of these (HF) metals with insulators Lu 3 Cu 2 Sb 3 O 14 , Cu(C 4 H 4 N 2 )(NO 3 ) 2 and YbAlO 3 . We demonstrate that the universal LFL and NFL behavior emerge because the HF compounds and the frustrated insulators are located near the topological FCQPT or are driven by the application of magnetic fields.

Intermediate Bandgap (IB) Cu 3 VS x Se 4−x Nanocrystals as a New Class of Light Absorbing Semiconductors

A new family of highly uniform, cubic-shaped Cu 3 VS x Se 4−x (CVSSe; 0 ≤ x ≤ 4) nanocrystals based on earth-abundant materials with intermediate bandgaps (IB) in the visible range is reported, synthesized via a hot-injection method. The IB transitions and optical band gap of the novel CVSSe nanocrystals are investigated using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, revealing tunable band gaps that span the visible and near-infrared regimes. The composition-dependent relationships among the crystal phase, optical band gap, and photoluminescence properties of the novel IB semiconductors with progressive substitution of Se by S are examined in detail. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy characterization confirm the high crystallinity and uniform size (~19.7 nm × 17.2 nm for Cu 3 VS 4 ) of the cubic-shaped nanocrystals. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations based on virtual crystal approximation support the experimental findings, showing good agreement in lattice parameters and band gaps across the CVSSe series and lending confidence that the targeted phases and compositions have been successfully realized. A current conversion efficiency, i.e., incident photon-to-current efficiency, of 14.7% was achieved with the p-type IB semiconductor Cu 3 VS 4 . These novel p-type IB semiconductor nanocrystals hold promise for enabling thin film solar cells with efficiencies beyond the Shockley–Queisser limit by allowing sub-band-gap photon absorption through intermediate-band transitions, in addition to the conventional direct-band-gap transition.

Structure and lattice excitations of the copper substituted lead oxyapatite Pb 9.06⁢(7)⁢ Cu 0.94⁢(6)⁢ (PO 3.92⁢(4) ) 6 ⁢O 0.96⁢(3)

The copper substituted lead oxyapatite, Pb 10-x⁢ Cu x (PO 3.92⁢(4) ) 6 ⁢O 0.96⁢(3) [x = 0.94(6)] was studied using neutron and x-ray diffraction and neutron spectroscopy techniques. The crystal structure of the main phase of our sample, which has come to be colloquially known as LK-99, is verified to possess a hexagonal structure with space group P6 3 /m, alongside the presence of impurity phases Cu and Cu 2 ⁢S. We determine the primary substitution location of the Cu as the Pb1 (6⁢ℎ) site, with a small substitution at the Pb2 (4⁢f) site. Consequently, no clear Cu-doping-induced structural distortion was observed in the investigated temperature region between 10 K and 300 K. Specially, we did not observe a reduction of coordinate number at the Pb2 site or a clear tilting of PO 4 tetrahedron. Magnetic characterization reveals a diamagnetic signal in the specimen, accompanied by a very weak ferromagnetic component at 2 K. No long-range magnetic order down to 10 K was detected by the neutron diffraction. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements did not show magnetic excitations for energies up to 350 meV. There is no sign of a superconducting resonance in the excitation spectrum of this material. The measured phonon density of states compares well with density functional theory calculations performed for the main LK-99 phase and its impurity phases. Our study may shed some insight into the role of the favored substitution site of copper in the absence of structural distortion and superconductivity in LK-99.

Structural and photoelectrochemical properties in the thin film system Cu–Fe–V–O and its ternary subsystems Fe–V–O and Cu–V–O

Thin-film material libraries in the ternary and quaternary metal oxide systems Fe–V–O, Cu–V–O, and Cu–Fe–V–O were synthesized using combinatorial reactive co-sputtering with subsequent annealing in air. Their compositional, structural, and functional properties were assessed using high-throughput characterization methods. Prior to the investigation of the quaternary system Cu–Fe–V–O, the compositions (Fe 61 V 39 )O x and (Cu 52 V 48 )O x with promising photoactivity were identified from their ternary subsystems Fe–V–O and Cu–V–O, respectively. Two Cu–Fe–V–O material libraries with (Cu 29-72 Fe 4-27 V 22-57 )O x and (Cu 11-55 Fe 27-73 V 12-34 )O x composition spread were investigated. Seven mixed ternary and quaternary phase regions were identified: I (α-Cu 3 FeV 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ), II (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 /FeVO 4 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 ), III (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 ), IV (Cu 5 V 2 O 10 /FeVO 4 , V (FeVO 4 /γ-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 ), VI (β-Cu 2 V 2 O 7 /α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ), and VII (β-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 26 /FeVO 4 ). Furthermore, in the investigated composition range, two photoactive regions, (Cu 53 Fe 7 V 40 )O x and (Cu 45 Fe 21 V 34 )O x , were identified, exhibiting 103 μ A/cm 2 and 108 μ A/cm 2 photocurrent density for the oxygen evolution reaction at 1.63 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, respectively. The highest photoactive region (Cu 45 Fe 21 V 34 )O x comprises the dominant α-Cu 3 Fe 4 V 6 O 24 phase and minor FeVO 4 phase. This photoactive region corresponds to having an indirect bandgap of 1.87 eV and a direct bandgap of 2.58 eV with an incident photon-to-current efficiency of 30% at a wavelength of 310 nm.

Prospects for Employing Lithium Copper Phosphates as High-Voltage Li-Ion Cathodes

Three compositions of lithium copper phosphates: Li 2 CuPO 4 , Li 2 Cu 5 (PO 4 ) 4 , and Li 2 CuP 2 O 7 have been studied as potential high-voltage cathode materials for Li-ion batteries, following computational predictions of high operating voltages. An assisted-microwave preparation of Li 2 CuPO 4 , which is otherwise difficult to prepare in nearly pure form, has been developed. The electrochemical performance of all three compounds has been investigated. Additionally, the cyclability of these materials is found to be poor due to structural changes, irreversible reduction to metallic copper at potentials as high as 2.5 V, and the possibility of dissolution into the electrolyte. Some general understanding in regard to the use of Cu compounds in redox electrodes is presented.

Characterizing the Roles of Biogeochemical Cycling and Ocean Circulation in Regulating Marine Copper Distributions

Copper (Cu) is a key micronutrient for marine phytoplankton. Its oceanic biogeochemical cycle has elicited considerable attention due to dissolved Cu exhibiting a unique linear profile with depth. Several processes have been proposed for explaining this behavior. Here, in this study, we characterize the relationships between the observed Cu, PO 4 3– , and Si on a global scale. We find that the depth profiles of Cu resemble those of Si more than of PO 4 3– in the global ocean. To understand their relationships, we couple the biogeochemical and internal circulation processes in a model, fitting optimal Cu:PO 4 3– uptake ratios and remineralization length-scales to replicate the marine Cu distributions. The modeling results suggest that Cu uptake needs in the Southern Ocean are substantially higher than those in other oceanic regions. In addition, our modeling results indicate a deep Cu remineralization in the global ocean. We offer an alternative mechanism that relies on biogeochemical cycling and internal circulation to produce the linear depth profiles of dissolved Cu. Our results suggest that diatoms are likely the major phytoplankton dominating oceanic Cu cycling.

An anode-free Li metal cell with replenishable Li designed for long cycle life

Pit corrosion of Li during stripping is an important factor responsible for poor Li cycling efficiency, a metric that determines its cycling life. When excess Li is present, it has been observed that Li tends to strip in a non-uniform fashion, forming pits that extend well past the theoretical Li depth that inevitably lead to the formation of electronically isolated “dead” Li particles. In this work, a novel cell with replenishable Li is shown to inherently mitigate the formation of this “dead” Li, as a direct result of a design in which the intrinsically more homogenous stripping behavior of anode-free cells are combined with a replenishable limited Li reservoir. These novel cells (Li|Cu||LiFePO 4 ) exhibit 25% and 34% higher cumulative capacities than the conventional cells (Cu|Li||LiFePO 4 ) in carbonate and ether electrolytes, respectively, enabling a significant increase in cycle life without impacting energy density. This improvement strategy represents a new direction in Li metal battery improvement, in which improved cycling can be achieved regardless of electrolyte chemistry.

Top Stack Optimization for Cu 2 BaSn(S, Se) 4 Photovoltaic Cell Leads to Improved Device Power Conversion Efficiency beyond 6%

Earth-abundant and air-stable Cu 2 BaSnS 4-x Se x (CBTSSe) and related thin-film absorbers are regarded as prospective options to meet the increasing demand for low-cost solar cell deployment. Devices based on vacuum-deposited CBTSSe absorbers have achieved record power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.2 % based on a conventional device structure using CdS buffer and i-ZnO/ITO window layers, with open-circuit voltage (V OC ) posing the major bottleneck for improving solar cell performance. The current study demonstrates a >20 % improvement in V OC (from 0.62 V to 0.75 V) and corresponding enhancement in PCE (from 5.1 % to 6.2 % without anti-reflection coating; to 6.5 % with MgF 2 anti-reflection coating) for solution-deposited CBTSSe solar cells. This performance improvement is realized by introducing an alternative successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR)-deposited Zn 1-x Cd x S buffer combined with sputtered Zn 1-x Mg x O/Al-doped ZnO window/top contact layer, which offer lower electron affinities relative to the conventional CdS/i-ZnO/ITO stack and better matching with the low electron affinity of CBTSSe. A combined experimental (temperature- and light intensity-dependent V OC measurements) and device simulation (SCAPS-1D) evaluation points to the importance of addressing relative band offsets for both the buffer and window layers relative to the absorber in mitigating interfacial recombination and optimizing CBTSSe solar cell performance.

Gapless spinons and a field-induced soliton gap in the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3

Here, we report a detailed study of the specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of a spin-liquid candidate: the hyperhoneycomb Cu oxalate framework compound [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 . The specific heat shows no anomaly associated with a magnetic transition at low temperatures down to T ~ 180 mK in zero magnetic field. We observe a large linear-in-T contribution to the specific heat γT, γ = 98 (1) mJ / mol K 2 , at low temperatures, indicative of the presence of fermionic excitations despite the Mott insulating state. The low-T specific heat is strongly suppressed by applied magnetic fields H, which induce an energy gap, Δ(H), in the spin-excitation spectrum. We use the four-component relativistic density-functional theory (DFT) to calculate the magnetic interactions, including the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange, which causes an effective staggered field acting on one copper sublattice. The magnitude and field dependence of the field-induced gap, Δ (H) ∝ H 2/3 , are accurately predicted by the soliton mass calculated from the sine-Gordon model of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with all parameters determined by our DFT calculations. Thus our experiment and calculations are entirely consistent with a model of [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 in which anisotropic magnetic exchange interactions due to Jahn-Teller distortion cause one copper sublattice to dimerize, leaving a second sublattice of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic chains. We also show that this model quantitatively accounts for the measured temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. Thus [(C 2 H 5 ) 3 NH] 2 Cu 2 (C 2 O 4 ) 3 is a canonical example of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet and not a resonating-valence-bond quantum spin liquid, as previously proposed.

Two-Dimensional Superconducting Fluctuations Associated with Charge-Density-Wave Stripes in La 1.87 ⁢Sr 0.13 ⁢Cu 0.99 ⁢Fe 0.01 ⁢O 4

The presence of a small concentration of in-plane Fe dopants in La 1.87 Sr 0.13 Cu 0.99 Fe 0.01 O 4 is known to enhance stripelike spin and charge density wave (SDW and CDW) order and suppress the superconducting T c . Here, we show that it also induces highly two-dimensional superconducting correlations that have been argued to be the signatures of a new form of superconducting order, the so-called pair density wave (PDW) order. In addition, using resonant soft x-ray scattering, we find that the two-dimensional superconducting fluctuation is strongly associated with the CDW stripe. In particular, the PDW signature first appears when the correlation length of the CDW stripe grows over eight times the lattice unit (~8 a). In conclusion, these results provide critical conditions for the formation of the PDW order.
