Tensile and fatigue properties of Inconel 718 at cryogenic temperatures

Tests to determine the tensile and fatigue properties of Inconel 718 at cryogenic temperatures show that the alloy increases in strength at low temperatures, with very little change in toughness. The effect of surface finish and grain size on the fatigue properties was also determined.

The stress corrosion resistance and the cryogenic temperature mechanical properties of hot rolled Nitronic 32 bar material

The ambient and cryogenic temperature mechanical properties and the ambient temperature stress corrosion properties of hot rolled and centerless ground Nitronic 32 stainless steel bar material are presented. The mechanical properties of longitudinal specimens were evaluated at test temperatures from ambient to liquid hydrogen. The tensile test data indicated increasing smooth tensile strength with decreasing temperature to liquid hydrogen temperature. However, below -200 F (-129.0 C) the notched tensile strength decreased slightly and below -320 F (-196.0 C) the decrease was significant. The elongation and reduction of area decreased drastically at temperatures below -200 F (-129.0 C). The Charpy V-notched impact energy decreased steadily with decreasing test temperature. Stress corrosion tests were performed on longitudinal tensile specimens stressed to 0, 75, and 90 percent of the 0.2 percent yield strength and on transverse 'C'-ring specimens stressed to 75 and 90 percent of the yield strength and exposed to: alternate immersion in a 3.5 percent NaCl bath, humidity cabinet environment, and a 5 percent salt spray atmosphere. The longitudinal tensile specimens experienced no corrosive attack; however, the 'C'-rings exposed to the alternate immersion and to the salt spray experienced some shallow etching and pitting, respectively. Small cracks appeared in two of the 'C'-rings after one month exposure to the salt spray.

Characterization of Cs 3 Sb photocathodes at cryogenic temperatures

Here, we report measurements of quantum efficiency (QE) and mean transverse energy (MTE) from Cs 3 Sb photocathodes in a wide range of photon energies at both room and cryogenic temperatures. Our measurements show a strong temperature dependence of MTE even at photon energies well above threshold, indicating the presence of strong inelastic scattering of excited electrons during transport before emission into vacuum. We also demonstrate a cathode cooling method that largely preserves the QE while reducing MTE, allowing us to achieve MTEs as low as 58 meV with 3% QE in green light from Cs 3 Sb photocathodes. Our results are crucial for producing brighter electron beams for various photoinjector applications like ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopy, x-ray free-electron lasers, and particle colliders.

Calibrating cryogenic temperature of TEM specimens using EELS

Cryogenic Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscopy has been established as a leading method to image sensitive biological samples and is now becoming a powerful tool to understand materials' behavior at low temperatures. However, achieving precise local temperature calibration at low temperatures remains a challenge, which is especially crucial for studying phase transitions and emergent physical properties in quantum materials. In this study, we employ electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to measure local cryogenic specimen temperatures. Here we use the temperature-dependent characteristics of aluminum's bulk plasmon peak in EEL spectra, which shifts due to changes in electron density caused by thermal expansion and contraction. We successfully demonstrate the versatility of this method by calibrating different liquid nitrogen cooling holders in various microscopes, regardless of whether a monochromated or non-monochromated electron beam is used. Temperature discrepancies between the actual temperature and the setpoint temperatures are identified across a range from room temperature to 100 K. This work demonstrates the importance of temperature calibrations at intermediate temperatures and presents a straightforward, robust method for calibrating local temperatures of cryogenically-cooled specimens in electron microscopes.

Connector seals fluid lines at cryogenic temperatures and high vacuums

A connector that will serve as a seal for fluids at cryogenic temperatures and in high vacuums was constructed by installing a metal disk between two sets of mating serrations to form two sealing surfaces. Compression on both sealing surfaces is ensured by spring action of the disk.

NASA low and ultralow temperature cryogenic cooler systems for space missions

The paper describes the NASA research program to provide low and ultralow temperature cryogenic cooler systems for future space missions. These include mechanical, solid cryogen, superfluid helium, helium-3, and helium-3/helium-4 dilution coolers, and all systems must function in the zero gravity environment of space. The temperatures produced range from tens of kelvin down to a few millikelvin; at higher temperatures cooling loads for sensors or detectors and associated sun shields may range up to a few watts. At the ultralow temperature end, cooling loads must be limited to tens of microwatts.
