Proper time to the black hole singularity from thermal one-point functions

We argue that the proper time from the event horizon to the black hole singularity can be extracted from the thermal expectation values of certain operators outside the horizon. This works for fields which couple to higher-curvature terms, so that they can decay into two gravitons. To extract this proper time, it is necessary to vary the mass of the field.

Quantum complexity in gravity, quantum field theory, and quantum information science

Quantum complexity quantifies the difficulty of preparing a state or implementing a unitary transformation with limited resources. Applications range from quantum computation to condensed matter physics and quantum gravity. Here, we seek to bridge the approaches of these fields, which define and study complexity using different frameworks and tools. We describe several definitions of complexity, along with their key properties. In quantum information theory, we focus on complexity growth in random quantum circuits. In quantum many-body systems and quantum field theory (QFT), we discuss a geometric definition of complexity in terms of geodesics on the unitary group. In dynamical systems, we explore a definition of complexity in terms of state or operator spreading, as well as concepts from tensor-networks. We also outline applications to simple quantum systems, quantum many-body models, and QFTs including conformal field theories (CFTs). Finally, we explain the proposed relationship between complexity and gravitational observables within the holographic anti-de Sitter (AdS)/CFT correspondence.

Three-Dimensional Topological Field Theories and Nonunitary Minimal Models

We find an intriguing relation between a class of three-dimensional nonunitary topological field theories (TFTs) and Virasoro minimal models M ( 2 , 2 r + 3 ) with r ≥ 1 . The TFTs are constructed by topologically twisting 3D N = 4 superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of rank-0, i.e., having zero-dimensional Coulomb and Higgs branches. We present ultraviolet (UV) field theory descriptions of the SCFTs with manifest N = 2 supersymmetry, which we argue is enhanced to N = 4 in the infrared. From the UV description, we compute various partition functions of the TFTs and reproduce some basic properties of the minimal models, such as their characters and modular matrices. We expect more general correspondence between topologically twisted 3d N = 4 rank-0 SCFTs and 2D nonunitary rational conformal field theories. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Conformal correlators on the Lorentzian torus

The general form of a 2D conformal field theory (CFT) correlator on a Euclidean Riemann surface, Lorentzian plane or Lorentzian cylinder is well known. This paper describes the general form of 2- and 3-point CFT correlators on the Lorentzian torus LT 2 which arises as the conformal boundary of the group manifold SL ( 2 , R ) ≃ AdS 3 / Z . We consider only generic points, thereby omitting an analysis of contact terms, which already exhibits a surprisingly rich structure. The results are relevant to celestial holography, for which the LT 2 at the boundary of Klein space is the home of the putative celestial CFT. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Universal entropy and hawking radiation of near-extremal AdS4 black holes

We compute the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of near-extremal asymptotically AdS 4 electrically charged rotating black holes using three different methods: (i) from the gravity solution, (ii) from the near-horizon Kerr/CFT correspondence and (iii) from the boundary conformal field theory. The results from these three different approaches match exactly, giving us a unique and universal expression for the entropy and the microstate counting of near-extremal AdS black holes via the AdS/CFT correspondence. In the second method, we extend the Kerr/CFT correspondence to the near-extremal case to compute the left and right central charges. We also use hidden conformal symmetry of the near-horizon geometry to compute the Frolov-Thorne temperatures. From the results of the near-extremal AdS 4 black hole entropy, we provide a microscopic foundation for Hawking radiation.

Topological terms with qubit regularization and relativistic quantum circuits

Qubit regularization provides a rich framework to explore quantum field theories. The freedom to choose how the important symmetries of the theory are embedded in the qubit regularization scheme allows us to construct new lattice models with rich phase diagrams. Some of the phases can contain topological terms which lead to critical phases. In this work we introduce and study the SU(3)-F qubit regularization scheme to embed the SO(3) spin-symmetry. We argue that qubit models in this regularization scheme contain several phases including a critical phase which describes the k = 1 Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) conformal field theory (CFT) at long distances, and two massive phases one of which is trvially gapped and the other which breaks the lattice translation symmetry. We construct a simple space-time Euclidean lattice model with a single coupling U and study it using the Monte Carlo method. We show the model has a critical phase at small U and a trivially massive phase at large U with a first order transition separating the two. Another feature of our model is that it is symmetric under space-time rotations, which means the temporal and spatial lattice spacing are connected to each other. The unitary time evolution operator obtained by a Wick rotation of the transfer matrix of our model can help us compute the physics of the k = 1 WZW CFT in real time without the need for tuning the temporal lattice spacing to zero. We use this idea to introduce the concept of a relativistic quantum circuit on a discrete space-time lattice.

Computing the Central Charge of the 3D Ising CFT Using Quantum Finite Elements

The 3D Ising conformal field theory (CFT) describes different physical systems, such as uniaxial magnets or fluids, at their critical points. In absence of an analytical solution for the 3D Ising model, the scaling dimensions and operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients characterizing this CFT must be determined numerically. The currently most-cited values for these quantities have been obtained from the conformal bootstrap, while lattice calculations have so far only produced reliable results for the scaling dimensions involved in calculating the critical exponents. Using Quantum Finite Elements to investigate critical \(\phi^4\)-theory on \(\mathbb{R}\times\mathbb{S}^2\), we show in this work that it is possible to extract scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients of the 3D Ising CFT by fitting the lattice four-point function with expectations from the operator product expansion for the radially quantized CFT and extrapolating to the continuum limit. This way, we have for the first time been able to use Monte Carlo simulations to compute the central charge of the theory.

Carving out OPE space and precise O(2) model critical exponents

We develop new tools for isolating CFTs using the numerical bootstrap. A “cutting surface” algorithm for scanning OPE coefficients makes it possible to find islands in high-dimensional spaces. Together with recent progress in large-scale semidefinite programming, this enables bootstrap studies of much larger systems of correlation functions than was previously practical. We apply these methods to correlation functions of charge-0, 1, and 2 scalars in the 3d O(2) model, computing new precise values for scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients in this theory. Our new determinations of scaling dimensions are consistent with and improve upon existing Monte Carlo simulations, sharpening the existing decades-old 8σ discrepancy between theory and experiment.

A perturbative CFT dual for pure NS–NS AdS 3 strings

We construct a conformal field theory dual to string theory on AdS 3 with pure NS–NS flux. It is given by a symmetric orbifold of a linear dilaton theory deformed by a marginal operator from the twist-2 sector. We compute two- and three-point functions on the CFT side to 4th order in conformal perturbation theory at large N. They agree with the string computation at genus 0, thus providing ample evidence for a duality. We also show that the full spectra of both short and long strings on the CFT and the string side match. Furthermore, the duality should be understood as perturbative in N –1 .

Multipartite entanglement in the one-dimensional spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Multipartite entanglement refers to the simultaneous entanglement between multiple subsystems of a many-body quantum system. While multipartite entanglement can be difficult to quantify analytically, it is known that it can be witnessed through the quantum Fisher information (QFI), a quantity that can also be related to dynamical Kubo response functions. In this work, we first show that the finite temperature QFI can generally be expressed in terms of a static structure factor of the system, plus a correction that vanishes as T→0. This implies that the static structure factor witnesses multipartite entanglement near quantum critical points at temperatures below a characteristic energy scale of the system. Therefore, in systems with a known static structure factor, we can deduce finite temperature scaling of multipartite entanglement and low temperature entanglement depth without knowledge of the full dynamical response function of the system. This is particularly useful to study 1D quantum critical systems in which sub-power-law divergences can dominate entanglement growth, where the conventional scaling theory of the QFI breaks down. Furthermore, the 1D spin- 1 2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is an important example of such a system, and we show that multipartite entanglement in the Heisenberg chain diverges nontrivially as ~ln(1/T) 3/2 . We verify these predictions with calculations of the QFI using conformal field theory and matrix product state simulations. Finally, we discuss the implications of our results for experiments to probe entanglement in quantum materials, comparing to neutron scattering data in KCuF 3 , a material well described by the Heisenberg chain.

A defect in AdS 3 /CFT 2 duality

AdS 3 string theory in the stringy regime k = (R AdS /ℓ s ) 2 < 1 provides a laboratory for the study of holography in which both sides of AdS/CFT duality are under fairly good control. Worldsheet string theory is solvable, and for closed strings the dual spacetime CFT is a deformation of a symmetric product orbifold. Here we extend this construction to include open strings by adding a probe D-string, described semiclassically by an AdS 2 D-brane in AdS 3 . The dual defect or boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) is again a deformed symmetric product, which now describes the Fock space of long open and closed strings near the AdS boundary, with a boundary deformation implementing the open/closed transition in addition to the symmetric product $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 twist deformation that implements closed string joining/splitting. The construction thus provides an explicit example of an AdS 3 /BCFT 2 duality.

Perturbative and nonperturbative studies of CFTs with MN global symmetry

Fixed points in three dimensions described by conformal field theories with \ensuremath{M N}_{m,n} = O(m)^n\rtimes S_n M N m , n = O ( m ) n ⋊ S n global symmetry have extensive applications in critical phenomena. Associated experimental data for m=n=2 m = n = 2 suggest the existence of two non-trivial fixed points, while the \varepsilon ε expansion predicts only one, resulting in a puzzling state of affairs. A recent numerical conformal bootstrap study has found two kinks for small values of the parameters m m and n n , with critical exponents in good agreement with experimental determinations in the m=n=2 m = n = 2 case. In this paper we investigate the fate of the corresponding fixed points as we vary the parameters m m and n n . We find that one family of kinks approaches a perturbative limit as m m increases, and using large spin perturbation theory we construct a large m m expansion that fits well with the numerical data. This new expansion, akin to the large N N expansion of critical O(N) O ( N ) models, is compatible with the fixed point found in the \varepsilon ε expansion. For the other family of kinks, we find that it persists only for n=2 n = 2 , where for large m m it approaches a non-perturbative limit with \Delta_\phi\approx 0.75 Δ ϕ ≈ 0.75 . We investigate the spectrum in the case \ensuremath{M N}_{100,2} M N 100 , 2 and find consistency with expectations from the lightcone bootstrap.

Comments on the quantum field theory of the Coulomb gas formalism

The holomorphic Coulomb gas formalism, as developed by Feigin-Fuchs, Dotsenko-Fateev and Felder, is a set of rules for computing minimal model observables using free field techniques. We attempt to derive and clarify these rules using standard techniques of quantum field theory. We begin with a careful examination of the timelike linear dilaton. Although the background charge of the model breaks the scalar field’s continuous shift symmetry, the exponential of the action remains invariant under a discrete shift because the background charge is imaginary. Gauging this symmetry makes the dilaton compact and introduces winding modes into the spectrum. One of these winding operators corresponds to the anti-holomorphic completion of the BRST current first introduced by Felder, and the full left/right cohomology of this BRST charge isolates the irreducible representations of the Virasoro algebra within the degenerate Fock space of the linear dilaton. The “supertrace” in the BRST complex reproduces the minimal model partition function and exhibits delicate cancellations between states with both momentum and winding. The model at the radius $R=\sqrt{pp^{\prime }}$ has two marginal operators corresponding to the Dotsenko-Fateev “screening charges”. Deforming by them, we obtain a model that might be called a “BRST quotiented compact timelike Liouville theory”. The Hamiltonian of the zero-mode quantum mechanics of this model is not Hermitian, but it is PT -symmetric and exactly solvable. Its eigenfunctions have support on an infinite number of plane waves, suggesting an infinite reduction in the number of independent states in the full quantum field theory. Applying conformal perturbation theory to the exponential interactions reproduces the Coulomb gas calculations of minimal model correlation functions. In contrast to spacelike Liouville, these “resonance correlators” are finite because the zero mode is compact. We comment on subtleties regarding the reflection operator identification, as well as naive violations of truncation in correlators with multiple reflection operators inserted. This work is part of an attempt to understand the relationship between the JT model of two dimen- sional gravity and the worldsheet description of the (2 , p ) minimal string as suggested by Seiberg and Stanford.

High energy modular bootstrap, global symmetries and defects

We derive Cardy-like formulas for the growth of operators in different sectors of unitary 2 dimensional CFT in the presence of topological defect lines by putting an upper and lower bound on the number of states with scaling dimension in the interval [Δ – δ, Δ + δ] for large Δ at fixed δ. Consequently we prove that given any unitary modular invariant 2D CFT symmetric under finite global symmetry G (acting faithfully), all the irreducible representations of G appear in the spectra of the untwisted sector; the growth of states is Cardy like and proportional to the “square” of the dimension of the irrep. In the Schwarzian limit, the result matches onto that of JT gravity with a bulk gauge theory. If the symmetry is non-anomalous, the result applies to any sector twisted by a group element. For c > 1, the statements are true for Virasoro primaries. Furthermore, the results are applicable to large c CFTs. We also extend our results for the continuous U(1) group.

Global aspects of conformal symmetry and the ANEC in dS and AdS

Starting from the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski we show that conformal symmetry implies the ANEC for a conformal field theory (CFT) in a de Sitter and anti-de Sitter background. A similar and novel bound is also obtained for a CFT in the Lorentzian cylinder. Using monotonicity of relative entropy, we rederive these results for dS and the cylinder. As a byproduct we obtain the vacuum modular Hamiltonian and entanglement entropy associated to null deformed regions of CFTs in (A)dS and the cylinder. A third derivation of the ANEC in dS is shown to follow from bulk causality in AdS/CFT. Finally, we use the Tomita-Takesaki theory to show that Rindler positivity of Minkowski correlators generalizes to conformal theories defined in dS and the cylinder.

2-Group global symmetries and anomalies in six-dimensional quantum field theories

We examine six-dimensional quantum field theories through the lens of higher-form global symmetries. Every Yang-Mills gauge theory in six dimensions, with field strength ƒ (2) , naturally gives rise to a continuous 1-form global symmetry associated with the 2-form instanton current J (2) ~ * Tr (ƒ (2) $\wedge$ ƒ (2) ). We show that suitable mixed anomalies involving the gauge field ƒ (2) and ordinary 0-form global symmetries, such as flavor or Poincaré symmetries, lead to continuous 2-group global symmetries, which allow two flavor currents or two stress tensors to fuse into the 2-form current J (2) . We discuss several features of 2-group symmetry in six dimensions, many of which parallel the four-dimensional case. The majority of six-dimensional supersymmetric conformal field theories (SCFTs) and little string theories have infrared phases with non-abelian gauge fields. We show that the mixed anomalies leading to 2-group symmetries can be present in little string theories, but that they are necessarily absent in SCFTs. This allows us to establish a previously conjectured algorithm for computing the ’t Hooft anomalies of most SCFTs from the spectrum of weakly-coupled massless particles on the tensor branch of these theories. We then apply this understanding to prove that the a -type Weyl anomaly of all SCFTs with a tensor branch must be positive, a > 0.

Holographic duality for Ising CFT with boundary

We extend the holographic duality between 3d pure gravity and 2d Ising CFT proposed in ref. [1] to CFTs with boundaries. Besides the usual asymptotic boundary, the dual bulk spacetime now has a real cutoff, on which live branes with finite tension, giving Neumann boundary condition on the metric tensor. The strongly coupled bulk theory requires that we dress the well-known semiclassical AdS/BCFT answer with boundary gravitons, turning the partition function into the form of Virasoro characters. Using this duality, we relate the brane tensions to the modular S-matrix elements of the dual BCFT and derive the transformation between gravitational solutions with different brane tensions under modular S action.

Shocks, superconvergence, and a stringy equivalence principle

We study propagation of a probe particle through a series of closely situated gravitational shocks. We argue that in any UV-complete theory of gravity the result does not depend on the shock ordering — in other words, coincident gravitational shocks commute. Shock commutativity leads to nontrivial constraints on low-energy effective theories. In particular, it excludes non-minimal gravitational couplings unless extra degrees of freedom are judiciously added. In flat space, these constraints are encoded in the vanishing of a certain “superconvergence sum rule.” In AdS, shock commutativity becomes the statement that average null energy (ANEC) operators commute in the dual CFT. We prove commutativity of ANEC operators in any unitary CFT and establish sufficient conditions for commutativity of more general light-ray operators. Superconvergence sum rules on CFT data can be obtained by inserting complete sets of states between light-ray operators.
