Process Intensification for Direct Conversion of Biomass-Based Syngas to High Octane Gasoline

The conversion of lignocellulosic-derived carbon sources via the creation of a CO2 rich syngas stream provides means to produce liquid hydrocarbon fuels, with advancements intended to create a cost-competitive method of sequential conversion via methanol and dimethyl ether intermediates. Previously developed methods with Cu/Beta zeolites enabled the conversion of dimethyl ether to linear and branched hydrocarbons, with high selectivities towards products with high-octane fuel properties. Through process intensification, use of a single reactor to convert syngas to methanol and DME, then further to hydrocarbons, allows for reduced capitol and operation cost for the same chemistries that typically use 3 reactors instead of one. Utilization of commercially available methanol synthesis catalyst (Megamax 800, Clariant, CZA) and methanol dehydration catalyst with the Cu/Beta catalyst allowed for conversion into hydrocarbon products in this single reactor set up. Reactor configuration with CZA and alumina catalysts mixed with or stacked in a bed physically above the Cu/Beta catalyst provided a system for the direct conversion of the syngas to hydrocarbons with improved yields and selectivities with higher net C1 conversions for stacked bed configurations. Through control of the process conditions, greater conversion of C1 oxygenate intermediates (i.e., methanol and dimethyl ether) was achieved with concomitant increase in selectivities towards gasoline and jet fuel range olefin and paraffin products. Lower hydrocarbon number products and less naphthenes were observed for the conversion of syngas compared to DME conversion on only the Cu/Beta system with prominent selectivities observed for C4, C5, and C7 hydrocarbons. The DME and methanol formation rates, with understanding of the equilibria for both processes, were determined as important factors to allow for improved performance of the Cu/Beta. Determination of the factors which allow for tuning of selectivities and yields created an intensified process which allows for a "market-responsive" biorefinery design, which can produce high octane gasoline or jet fuel range hydrocarbons to meet demands for a more sustainable route to liquid fuels.

Development of a half-meter scale Traveling-Wave (TW) SRF cavity

Traveling-wave technology can push the accelerator field gradient of niobium SRF cavity to 70MV/m or higher beyond the fundamental limit of 50~60MV/m in Standing-Wave regime. The 1st demonstration of TW resonance excitation in a proof-of-principle 3-cell SRF cavity in 2K liquid helium was successfully carried out at Fermilab in collaboration with Euclid Techlabs. In parallel with that, the RF design process of 0.5~1 meter scale TW cavity was begun at Fermilab for advancing TW technologies necessary more for future accelerator-scale one. Considering the physical dimensions of existing SRF facilities (for fabrication, processing, and cryogenic testing) and the lessons learned from the 3-cell, Fermilab has proposed a preliminary RF design of a half-meter scale TW SRF cavity. It consists of a 7-cell structure and a power feedback waveguide (WG) loop with new RF configurations to control TW resonance. Here we report a preliminary RF design, development plans, and activities.

Development of Digital Twin-Informed Predictive Maintenance for Critical Components in Advanced Reactors

Small modular reactors (SMRs) and microreactors, along with other advanced reactor (AR) technologies, are key to the future of nuclear energy. For these systems to achieve low operating costs, high reliability, and flexibility across applications, their operation and maintenance must be optimized. Digital twin (DT) technology is one of the technologies that enables real-time (or faster than real-time) monitoring and prognosis of critical components which are vital for operational efficiency, low costs, and enhanced safety of ARs, accelerating their deployment. DT technology provides dynamic virtual representation of physical assets by integrating real-time data, physics-based models, and advanced analytics, which is critical to optimizing the performance of the entire energy system throughout the life cycle. DTs empower engineers and operators to virtually explore different scenarios, configurations, and control strategies, allowing for the identification of optimal solutions that maximize reactor efficiency, safety, and economics.

Optimizing the lean hydrocarbon NO x trap: Sequential and dual-layer configurations

Vehicular emission control catalysts are ineffective in eliminating CO, hydrocarbons, and NO x during engine cold-start when exhaust temperatures are below 200 °C. In this study the performance of coupled low temperature NO x , n-C 12 H 26 (C 12 ), and C 3 H 6 trapping, release and conversion for a series of model Lean Hydrocarbon NO x Trap (LHCNT) catalysts are examined. Pd and Pt supported on small-pore (SSZ-13) and large-pore (BEA) zeolites are selected based on the performance during transient NO and C 12 uptake, release and conversion experiments. These catalysts are combined into sequential (Pt + Pd/BEA → Pd/SSZ-13; Pd/SSZ-13 → Pt + Pd/BEA) and dual-layer (Pt + Pd/BEA top, Pd/SSZ-13 bottom) configurations in an attempt to improve the trapping and conversion performance. While all three configurations trap between 75 and 100 μmolNO x /g-cat, the Pd/SSZ-13 → Pt + Pd/BEA sequential configuration is most effective in simultaneously trapping C 12 and NO in the presence of H 2 O, resulting in excellent NO and C 12 storage below 100 °C with release and/or conversion at or above 200 °C. For each configuration, C 12 oxidation lights-off below 300 °C and NO oxidation achieves ~35 % conversion in the absence of C 12 . Neither the presence of C 12 nor the order of the sequential configuration has a significant impact on NO uptake. C 12 significantly delays NO and NO 2 desorption to temperatures exceeding 300 °C. The more compact dual-layer catalyst is most effective in forming NO 2 as the release temperature lines up with the maximum NO conversion temperature but traps less C 12 than the sequential configurations. The addition of C 3 H 6 in the feed on the dual-layer catalyst leads to further delay in the NO x desorption as well as increased NO and C 12 conversion at high temperatures. Here, the overall findings provide guidance in the optimizing LHCNT configuration for realistic feeds.

Reproducible benchmark for the SNAP 8 experimental reactor at dry conditions

Here, this work provides fully reproducible benchmark models of the Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power (SNAP) 8 Experimental Reactor. Validation benchmarks of the criticality configuration experiments under dry conditions with no coolant are presented. In addition, relevant reactivity worth experiments, and measurement of power distributions are validated and presented here. Discrepancies between modeled and experimental results are at most 110 pcm for fuel and poison worths, and critical configurations that do not manipulate control elements are within 50 pcm. Larger discrepancies found in reflector element worth experiments are due to experimental methodology which was noted as being simplified due to limited calculational capabilities at the time, while discrepancy in the control element manipulated critical configuration is due the absence of structural components for modeling simplification. Power distributions closely follow what was observed in experiment with expected peaking in reflecting elements. All models are well documented with cited references describing and justifying assumptions, simplifications, and adjustments to reproduce the models with any nuclear safety codes; model inputs and outputs are stored in the snapReactors GitHub repository.

A semantics-driven framework to enable demand flexibility control applications in real buildings

Decarbonising and digitalising the energy sector requires scalable and interoperable Demand Flexibility (DF) applications. Semantic models are promising technologies for achieving these goals, but existing studies focused on DF applications exhibit limitations. These include dependence on bespoke ontologies, lack of computational methods to generate semantic models, ineffective temporal data management and absence of platforms that use these models to easily develop, configure and deploy controls in real buildings. This paper introduces a semantics-driven framework to enable DF control applications in real buildings. The framework supports the generation of semantic models that adhere to Brick and SAREF while using metadata from Building Information Models (BIM) and Building Automation Systems (BAS). The work also introduces a web platform that leverages these models and an actor and microservices architecture to streamline the development, configuration and deployment of DF controls. The paper demonstrates the framework through a case study, illustrating its ability to integrate diverse data sources, execute DF actuation in a real building, and promote modularity for easy reuse, extension, and customisation of applications. The paper also discusses the alignment between Brick and SAREF, the value of leveraging BIM data sources, and the framework's benefits over existing approaches, demonstrating a 75% reduction in effort for developing, configuring, and deploying building controls.

A New Configuration of Paralleled Modular ANPC Multilevel Converter Controlled by an Improved Modulation Method for 1 MHz, 1 MW EV Charger

In this work, a new configuration of the modular multilevel converter (MLC) based on the parallel connection of three-level active-neutral-point-clamped (3L-ANPC) cells as well as its improved modulation method is proposed for 1 MHz, 1 MW electric vehicle (EV) megacharger. In the proposed paralleled modular ANPC-MLC, only six high-frequency silicon carbide (SiC) power switches operating at 333 kHz are required to generate 1 MHz switching frequency spectrum. Moreover, the operating voltage of all power devices is halved, the magnitude of the first switching frequency harmonic cluster is decreased by the factor of five, and the load current is equally distributed between the 3L-ANPC legs by employing the proposed improved modulation method. Hence, the modularity, efficiency, and power density of the proposed converter are notably increased, whereas the value of passive components and the overall switching loss are remarkably decreased. In addition, an optimized design of the one 3L-ANPC cell of the proposed paralleled modular ANPC-MLC for 1 MHz, 1MW EV megacharger using Ansys SIwave, Icepak, and Q3D finite element method platforms is presented and analyzed in detail. The provided experimental results of the down-scaled setup verify the feasibility and viability of the proposed configuration as well as its improved switching pattern.
