Composition stability limits for the rocksalt-structure phase /Pb1-y Sny/1-xTex from lattice parameter measurements.

The parameter values measured are in agreement with those reported by Mazelsky and Lubell (1963) and data of Bis and Dixon (1969). The measurements for SnTe introduce a large amount of data into a defect model analysis that shows that the ratio of the number of holes per tin-vacancy acceptor to the 77 K Hall factor is independent of the apparent hole concentration. The measurements reveal some interesting problems in handling the Sn-rich alloys in fine powder form due to the uptake of oxygen.

Polyimidazopyrrolone model compounds.

Study of model reactions between phthalic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine under conditions analogous to the polymerization and post cyclization of dianhydrides with bis(o-diamines) to form polyimidazopyrrolones (Pyrrones). Solid-state thermal conversion of the amide-acid-amine affords a unique dimeric species containing amide, imide, and benzimidazole functions. It was confirmed that melt techniques lead to disproportionation products. The application of these findings to related polymer syntheses is discussed.

Development of polyphenylquinoxaline graphite composites

The potential of polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ)/graphite composites to serve as structural material at 316 C (600 F)has been demonstrated using a block copolymer, BlCo(13), PPQ derivative. Initially, thirteen polyphenylquinoxalines were evaluated. From this work, four candidate polymers were selected for preliminary evaluation as matrices for HMS graphite fiber reinforced composites. The preliminary composite evaluation enabled selection of one of the four polymers for advanced composite preparation and testing. Using an experimentally established cure schedule for each of the four polymers, preliminary laminates of 50% resin volume content, prepared without postcure, were tested for flexure strength and modulus, interlaminar shear strength (short beam), and tensile strength and modulus at ambient temperature. A block copolymer (Bl Co 13) derived from one mole p-bis (phenylglyoxalyl) benzene, one fourth mole 3,3'-diaminobenzidine and three-fourths mole 3,3', 4,4'-tetraminobenzophenone was selected for extensive study. Tensile, flexural, and interlaminar shear values were obtained after aging and testing postcured BlCo(13) laminates at 316 C (600 F). The potential of PPQ/graphite laminates to serve as short term structural materials at temperatures up to 371 C (700 F) was demonstrated through weight loss experiments.

Polyimidazopyrrolone model compounds.

The model reactions between phthalic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine were studied under conditions analogous to the polymerization and post-cyclization of dianhydrides with bis(o-diamines) to form polyimidazopyrrolones (Pyrrones). The route from the initial amide-acid-amine to the tetracyclic Pyrrone model when the reactions are conducted in aprotic solvents is highly competitive between isolatable benzimidazole-acid and imide-amine intermediates. Solid-state thermal conversion of the amide-acid-amine affords a unique dimeric species containing amide, imide, and benzimidazole functions. It was confirmed that melt techniques lead to disproportionation products. The application of these findings to related polymer synthesis is discussed.

Flame retardant polyphosphazenes

Six polyphosphazene compositions were prepared by reaction of three bis-tertiary phosphines with two phenyl-s-triazine derived diazides. All six polyphosphazenes produced were completely characterized, four of them were furthermore subjected to isothermal gravimetric analysis, smoke density measurements, flammability and oxidative thermal degradation testing. The results of the characterization studies indicate that only low molecular weight oligomers, possibly of a cyclic structure, were obtained in the polymerization reactions. Despite this, however, two of the materials showed no weight loss after 96 hr at 200 C, one did not autoignite at 500 C in air, and all four self extinguished when exposed to a flame as soon as contact between flame and resin was lost. The only toxic decomposition products to be concerned about were found to be hydrogen cyanide and benzene. Under the conditions employed it was proven, however, that the quantities of toxic products are greatly reduced if no ignition takes place, e.g., if thermal decomposition proceeds at a sufficiently low rate.

Crosslinking and degradation mechanisms in model sealant candidates

Heterocyclic ring systems were investigated, triazines and 1,2,4-oxadiazoles. Only a limited effort was extended to the preparation of triazoles. Compounds, n-perfluoroheptyl-s-triazine, a perfluoroether substituted triazine, C3F7OCF(CF3)CF2OCF(CF3) 3C3N3,1,4-bus (5-perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazolyl -benzene, its perfluoroalkylether substituded analogue, and 3,5-bis(perfluoro-n-heptyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazole were synthesized and characterized. To eliminate the effect due to a tertiary fluorine present in branched materials, the pure n-alkyl-compounds were prepared. The main starting material, perfluoro-n-octanonitrile, was obtained from commercially available perfluoro-n-octanoic acid via a three step synthesis.

The development of spacecraft explosives for the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center

Several heat resistant secondary explosives suitable for use in spacecraft hardware were characterized and tested in order to select a prime candidate for further study. The design goal criterion was that no significant degradation of the explosive takes place after exposure to 315 C. The final selection was made from the following candidates: PYX (2,6-bis (picrylamino)-3,5-dinitropyridine), ONT (octanitro-m-terphenyl), and TPT (2,4,6 tripicryl-s-triazine), following performance tests in detonating cords. TPT was the final selection and was further characterized and evaluated in order to obtain data for a procurement specification.

Study of improved resins for advanced supersonic technology composites. Part 1: Heteroaromatic polymers containing ether groups. Part 2: Curing chemistry of aromatic polymers and composite studies

Fourteen ether-containing, aromatic dianhydrides have been synthesized from N-phenyl-3 or 4-nitrophthalimide and various bisphenols. The process involves nucleophilic displacement of activated nitro groups with bisphenolate ions. Ether-containing dianhydrides were indefinitely stable in the presence of atmospheric moisture. One-step, high temperature solution polymerization of the ether-containing dianhydrides with m-phenylene diamine, 4,4'-oxydianiline and 1, 3-bis(4-aminophenoxy)benzene afforded 42 polyetherimides. The polyetherimides were all soluble in m-cresol except two which were found to be crystalline. The glass transition temperatures of the polyetherimides ranged from 178 to 277 C. Soluble polybenzimidazopyrrolones containing ether groups were also prepared from the same ether-containing dianhydrides and aromatic tetraamines by one-step solution polymerization. Using low molecular weight polyetherimides, various thermoset resin systems were developed and tested as matrices for fiber-reinforced composites. The curing chemistry involving reaction of the phthalonitrile group and the o-diaminophenyl group was found to be generally applicable to crosslinking various aromatic polymers other than polyimides.

Flame retardant polyphosphazenes

Three processes for the preparation of polyphosphazenes were investigated: (1) the reaction of bisphosphines with diazides, (2) the condensation of bisdichlorophosphoranes with diamines; and (3) the treatment of bisphosphines with diamines in the presence of carbon tetrachloride followed by base dehydrohalogenation. All products obtained were of low molecular weight; the degree of polymerization did not exceed twelve repeating units. However, several compositions exhibited good thermal stability. No weight loss was observed up to 390 C when heated in air at 5 C/min. Treatment of bisphosphines with either an excess of a diazide or an excess of a diamine in the presence of carbon tetrachloride resulted in the production of difunctional phosphazenes which were respectively, azido and amino terminated. The reaction of these azido terminated extended monomers with bisphosphines did not produce high molecular weight materials. The bis-aminophosphazene prepared for the first time under this contract was successfully incorporated into a polyimide.

Assessment of relative flammability and thermochemical properties of some thermoplastic materials

Thermomechanical properties, flammability, oxygen index, relative toxicity of pyrolysis effluents, and char yields were studied for 12 advanced polymers which are candidates for use in aircraft interiors as decorative films, compression- and injection-molded parts and thermoplastic parts. Polymers sampled included polyphenylene sulfide, 9,9 bis (4-hydroxyphenol) fluorene polycarbonate-poly (dimethylsiloxane), polyether sulfone, polyvinyl fluoride and polyvinylidene fluoride. Availability of these samples, whether in commercial form or in test quantities, is specified. An estimate of relative fire resistance for the materials was obtained; the five polymers listed above were found to be the most fire resistant of the 12 sampled.

NR-150B2 adhesive development

Adhesive based polyimide solutions which are more easily processed than conventional aromatic polyimide systems and show potential for use for extended times at 589K are discussed. The adhesive system is based on a solution containing diglyme as the solvent and 2,2 bis(3',4'-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane, paraphenylenediamine, and oxydianiline. The replacement of N-methylpyrrolidone with diglyme as the solvent was found to improve the adhesive strengths of lap shear samples and simplify the processing conditions for bonding both titanium and graphite fiber/polyimide matrix resin composites. Information was obtained on the effects of various environments including high humidity, immersion in jet fuel and methylethylketone on aluminum filled adhesive bonds. The adhesive was also evaluated in wide area bonds and flatwise tensile specimens using titanium honeycomb and composite face sheets. It was indicated that the developed adhesive system has the potential for use in applications requiring long term exposure to at least 589K (600 F).

Crystalline polyimides containing 4,4'-bis/3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy/diphenyl sulfide dianhydride

A high degree of crystallinity has been found in unoriented polymer films formed from 4,4'-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)diphenyl sulfide dianhydride (BDSDA) and p-phenylenediamine (PDA). Partial crystallinity for a polymer containing BDSDA and benzidine is also reported. A study of the thermal properties of the crystalline polyimides shows crystalline melting points of 426 C and 483 C respectively for the BDSDA-PDA and the BDSDA-benzidine polymers.
