Spatially resolved measurements of the absolute reflectivity and center to limb variations of Jupiter in the 6190, 7250 and 8900 A methane bands and nearby continuum regions are presented and analyzed for the south equatorial belts (SEBs) and south tropical zone (STrZ). It is found that the polar hoods, equatorial zone, Red Spot and north tropical zone have highest methane reflectivities, with the temperate zones and polar regions having low reflectivity and the STrZ and SEBs having intermediate values. The data on the SEB and STrZ are analyzed in terms of diffuse reflecting-scattering and two-cloud models of the vertical distribution of aerosols in the Jovian atmosphere. To fit observations, the STrZ cloud top must have between 0.55 and 0.43 bar total pressure and optical depth between 1.5 and 2.5. The reflecting-scattering models are not suitable for the SEBs. The SEB upper cloud is deeper, cloud thickness is less and the lower cloud is deeper than in the STrZ. A forward scattering haze layer accounts for limb darkening in the continuum.
The paper presents cloud structure models for Jupiter's Great Red Spot, Equatorial and North Tropical Zones, North and South Temperate Zones, and North and South Polar Regions. The models are based on images of Jupiter in three methane bands and nearby continuum; radiative transfer calculations include multiple scattering and absorption from three aerosol layers. The model results include the transition in the upper-cloud altitude to 3 km lower altitude from the tropical zones to temperate zones and polar regions, a N/S asymmetry in cloud thickness in the tropical and temperature zones, and the presence of aerosols up to about 0.3 bar in the Great Red Spot and Equatorial Zone. It is concluded that polarization data are sensitive to aerosols in and above the upper cloud layer but insensitive to deeper cloud structure.
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) requires low noise broadband total power radiometers of high gain stability. Preliminary results of SETI field tests for a variety of receiver configurations at Deep Space Station 13 are discussed. The power spectra of Deep Space Network low noise receiving systems exhibit I/F noise whose spectral index is significantly smaller than unity. The gain stability of the S-band systems tested is almost 0.0001. An appendix presents a derivation of the power spectrum of the output of a square law detector.
Cross-sections of (0-16)(0-18) at 79 K have been obtained from photoabsorption measurements on mixtures of (0-16)2, (0-18)2, and (0-16)(0-18) at various pressures throughout the wavelength region 180.5-195.3 nm with a 6.65 m photoelectric scanning spectrometer equipped with a 2400 lines/mm grating and having an instrumental width (FWHM) of 0.0013 nm. The measured absorption cross-sections of the (0-16)(0-18) Schumann-Runge bands (11.0)-(3.0) are independent of the instrumental width. The measured cross-sections are presented graphically.
This article describes measurements made at all three Deep Space Network 70-m S-band polarization diverse (SPD) systems to determine and eliminate the cause of the 1-K elevation in follow-up noise temperature in the listen-only mode of the SPD systems at DSS 43 and DSS 63. The system noise temperatures obtained after finding and correcting the cause of the elevated follow-up noise temperature are also reported.

New antennas for the NASA Deep Space Network (DSN) have been built to replace the aging antennas of older designs for deep space communications.
A superior solar conjunction occurs when the sun lies near the signal path of a source as observed from the Earth. Interplanetary spacecraft sent to the planets typically encounter one or more solar conjunctions during their mission lifetimes. During these periods, the signals sent to and from the spacecraft encounter degradation due to the intervening charged particles of the solar corona.
