NNLO QCD corrections to weak boson fusion Higgs boson production in the $H → b \overline{b}$ and $\textit{H → WW* →}$ 4$\textit{l}$ decay channels

We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to Higgs boson production in weak boson fusion followed by its decay to a $b\bar{b}$ pair or to a pair of leptonically-decaying $\textit{W}$ bosons. Our calculation allows us to compute realistic fiducial cross sections and assess the impact of fiducial cuts applied to the Higgs boson decay products on the magnitude of QCD radiative corrections in weak boson fusion.

$t\overline{t}b\overline{b}$ at NLO precision in a variable flavor number scheme

Top-quark pair production in association with two $b$-jets is computed at next-to-leading order QCD precision, including effects of the $b$-quark mass, and matched to a $t\overline{t}$+jets simulation in a variable flavor number scheme. The Monte Carlo realization of this method, called fusing, consistently embeds the four-flavor calculation in a particle-level event generator. As a first phenomenological application, we present observables relevant to the data-driven estimation of irreducible backgrounds to $t\overline{t}H$ -production.

Modeling a divertor with mid-leg pumping for high-power H-mode scenarios in DIII-D considering E x B drift flows

Edge-plasma simulations of a baffled, long-legged divertor in DIII-D, performed using the multi-fluid code UEDGE, indicate that the position of the detachment front is constrained to the location of the pump duct along the low-field side (LFS) baffle. Simulations including magnetic and E x B drifts were performed for 12.5 MW deuterium plasmas including intrinsic carbon and seeded neon to assess the optimal location of the LFS divertor pump to create a stable detachment front between the target and the X-point. The radiation front position in the simulations, taken to be indicative of the detachment front, can be controlled between the pump and X-point in the favorable magnetic field direction for H-mode access by moving the pump duct location upstream of the target along the LFS baffle. In the unfavorable magnetic field direction, the radial E θ x B drift flows are directed towards the pumping surface, efficiently removing the injected deuterium gas and limiting the sensitivity of the radiation front location to the gas injection rate. The role of pumping rate and drift direction on the pumping efficiency are also found to affect the divertor plasma conditions and detachment front location in UEDGE simulations.

Effects of the Hydrophobic Block Length Ratio of Poly(vinylbenzyl N -methylpiperidinium carbonate)- b -polyethylene- b -poly(vinylbenzyl N -methylpiperidinium carbonate) Block Copolymers for Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolysis

Electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen from renewable electricity is an extremely attractive strategy to reduce energy dependence on fossil fuels. Development of membrane and ionomer materials that maintain high performance with long lifetimes is needed. We developed and investigated the performance and durability of a series of polyethylene-based ABA triblock copolymer anion exchange ionomer and membrane (AEI, AEM) materials for anion exchange membrane water electrolysis. Poly(vinylbenzyl N-methylpiperidinium carbonate)-b-polyethylene-b-poly(vinylbenzyl N-methylpiperidinium carbonate) was synthesized with different hydrophobic/hydrophilic block ratios (1.02:1, 2.58:1, and 4.46:1) resulting in a range of ion exchange capacities (1.1–1.8 meq g –1 ) and water swelling (23–154%) characteristics. All AEMs showed full anionic dissociation, as evidenced by linear Arrhenius correlations, and excellent carbonate conductivity of 8–94 mS cm –1 at 50 °C. Hydrophilic phase separation may offer superior chemical durability by only wetting the ion-conducting region of the polymer and avoiding attack at the nonwetted backbone. We evaluated the performance and durability of these AEMs as a function of hydrophobic polyethylene (PE) content. The AEM containing the least amount of PE displayed the highest performance of 1 A cm –2 at 2.3 V but degraded at 40 mV h –1 before catastrophically failing after <3 h at 0.5 A cm –2 . With greater PE-containing AEMs, the degradation rate was reduced by 3 orders of magnitude with only a 0.2 V increase in voltage. Constant current electrolysis for 50 h resulted in a voltage change of 0.3 mV h –1 in a single-cell water electrolyzer and 1 M potassium carbonate. In a 600 h test, the voltage change in the final 200 h was impressively low for an experimental film, 58 μV h –1 . Postmortem analysis indicated that the membrane did not thin and that water becomes more tightly hydrogen-bound in the polymer after electrolysis.

Spin–phonon interactions and magnetoelectric coupling in Co 4 B 2 O 9 ( B = Nb, Ta)

In order to explore the consequences of spin–orbit coupling on spin–phonon interactions in a set of chemically similar mixed metal oxides, we measured the infrared vibrational properties of Co 4 B 2 O 9 (B = Nb, Ta) as a function of temperature and compared our findings with lattice dynamics calculations and several different models of spin–phonon coupling. Frequency vs temperature trends for the Co 2+ shearing mode near 150 cm –1 reveal significant shifts across the magnetic ordering temperature that are especially large in relative terms. Bringing these results together and accounting for noncollinearity, we obtain spin–phonon coupling constants of –3.4 and –4.3 cm –1 for Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 and the Ta analog, respectively. Analysis reveals that these coupling constants are derived from interlayer (rather than intralayer) exchange interactions and that the interlayer interactions contain competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic contributions. At the same time, beyond-Heisenberg terms are minimized due to fortuitous symmetry considerations, different from most other 4d- and 5d-containing oxides. Comparison with other contemporary oxides shows that spin–phonon coupling in this family of materials is among the strongest ever reported, suggesting an origin for magnetoelectric coupling.

Higgs to b b ¯ from vector boson fusion for high-scale physics

Vector boson fusion is arguably the most direct collider probe of electroweak symmetry breaking. Typically, the signature includes two forward/backward jets with low transverse momenta with a scale that is set by the mass of the vector boson. For this reason, an upper cut is used when searching for vector boson fusion processes in the Standard Model. Alternatively, the upper cut on the forward jets can be removed and the high-momentum exchange region of vector boson fusion can be studied. This phase space region has sensitivity to new physics via higher dimensional operators and form factors. In this work, we study the high-momentum region of the vector boson fusion channel where the Higgs decays to b b ¯ . We show that, depending on the form of new physics, the limits on the new physics scale range from 0.5 to 1.8 TeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs via gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in the $b\bar{b}$τ + τ – final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs in the HH → $b\overline{b}$$\tau^{+}\tau^{-}$ channel is performed using 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis strategy is optimized to probe anomalous values of the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier $\kappa_{\tau}$ and of the quartic HHVV (v = W,Z) coupling modifier $\kappa$ 2⁢V . No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed (expected) upper limit μ HH < 5.9⁢(3.3) is set at 95% confidence-level on the Higgs boson pair production cross section normalized to its Standard Model prediction. The coupling modifiers are constrained to an observed (expected) 95% confidence interval of -3.1 <$\kappa_{\tau}$ < 9.0 (-2.5 < $\kappa_{\tau}$ < 9.3) and -0.5 <$\kappa$ 2⁢V < 2.7 (-0.2 <$\kappa$ 2⁢V < 2.4), assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are fixed to the Standard Model prediction. The results are also interpreted in the context of effective field theories via constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings and Higgs boson pair production cross sections assuming different kinematic benchmark scenarios.

Computationally-driven discovery of second harmonic generation in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 through inversion symmetry breaking

Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals with superior properties are significant for advancing laser technologies and applications. Introducing rare earth metals to borates is a promising and effective way to modify the electronic structure of a crystal to improve its optical properties in the visible and ultraviolet range. In this work, we computationally discover inversion symmetry breaking in EuBa 3 (B 3 O 6 ) 3 , which was previously identified as centric, and demonstrate noncentrosymmetry via synthesizing single crystals for the first time by the floating zone method. We determine the correct space group to be P 6¯. The material has a large direct bandgap of 5.56 eV and is transparent down to 250 nm. The complete anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical properties were also investigated with a d 11 of ∼0.52 pm/V for optical second harmonic generation. Further, it is Type I and Type II phase matchable. This work suggests that rare earth metal borates are an excellent crystal family for exploring future deep ultraviolet (DUV) NLO crystals. It also highlights how first principles computations combined with experiments can be used to identify noncentrosymmetric materials that have been wrongly assigned to be centrosymmetric.
