The role of microstructural evolution during spark plasma sintering on the soft magnetic and electronic properties of a CoFe–Al2O3 soft magnetic composite

Abstract For transformers and inductors to meet the world’s growing demand for electrical power, more efficient soft magnetic materials with high saturation magnetic polarization and high electrical resistivity are needed. This work aimed at the development of a soft magnetic composite synthesized via spark plasma sintering with both high saturation magnetic polarization and high electrical resistivity for efficient soft magnetic cores. CoFe powder particles coated with an insulating layer of Al 2 O 3 were used as feedstock material to improve the electrical resistivity while retaining high saturation magnetic polarization. By maintaining a continuous non-magnetic Al 2 O 3 phase throughout the material, both a high saturation magnetic polarization, above 1.5 T, and high electrical resistivity, above 100 μΩ·m, were achieved. Through microstructural characterization of samples consolidated at various temperatures, the role of microstructural evolution on the magnetic and electronic properties of the composite was elucidated. Upon consolidation at relatively high temperature, the CoFe was to found plastically deform and flow into the Al 2 O 3 phase at the particle boundaries and this phenomenon was attributed to low resistivity in the composite. In contrast, at lower consolidation temperatures, perforation of the Al 2 O 3 phase was not observed and a high electrical resistivity was achieved, while maintaining a high magnetic polarization, ideal for more efficient soft magnetic materials for transformers and inductors.

Adsorption and Surface Diffusion of Metals on α-Al2O3 for Advanced Manufacturing Applications

Abstract The adsorption and diffusion of Mo and Nb adatoms on the $$\alpha$$ α -Al 2 O 3 (0001) surface were explored using density functional theory-based methods. Adsorption energies of Mo and Nb adatoms at minima sites on the surface were determined. Mo and Nb adatoms prefer to adsorb to the same locations on the surface, and larger adsorption energies calculated for Nb compared to Mo indicate that Nb adatom-surface interactions are stronger than Mo. Using minima adsorption sites as initial and final locations for surface diffusion, energy barriers for diffusion were calculated using the nudged elastic band method. Overall, Mo and Nb follow roughly the same diffusion paths. The diffusion pre-factors for Mo and Nb are similar; however, Mo diffusion has a lower energy barrier and thus a larger diffusion coefficient compared with Nb. These results provide insight into the role of surface diffusion of Mo and Nb adatoms during advanced manufacturing processes.

Producing cement clinker assemblages in the system: CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-SO3-CaCl2-MgO

Highlights: • Alinite formation conditions are optimised. • Ye'elimite and alinite cannot be simultaneously produced. • Ternesite and chlormayenite are compatible at 1150 °C. • Alite is formed at a reduced temperature of 1300 °C. • Wadalite and chlorellestadite can incorporate chloride in cement clinker assemblages. The cement industry is carbon-intensive, and the valorisation of industrial side-streams/residuals for use as alternative raw materials can enable the cement industry to reduce its carbon footprint as well as promote resource efficiency. Apart from key clinker ingredients such as CaO, Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}, and SiO{sub 2}, industrial residues can also contain MgO, CaCl{sub 2}, and SO{sub 3}. Therefore, this study investigates the formation of cement clinker assemblages in the system CaO-SiO{sub 2}-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-SO{sub 3}-CaCl{sub 2}-MgO at temperatures ranging between 1100 and 1300 °C. The production of a clinker composed mainly of alinite and ye'elimite is first attempted; it is found that these phases cannot be simultaneously produced. Ternesite is also not compatible with alinite under the conditions studied. Wadalite is compatible with both ye'elimite and ternesite, while ternesite is also compatible with chlormayenite at 1150 °C. Additionally, the low-temperature formation of alite was also observed with the presence of CaCl{sub 2} in the raw-material mix.

Predicting CaO-(MgO)-Al2O3-SiO2 glass reactivity in alkaline environments from force field molecular dynamics simulations

In this investigation, force field-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been employed to generate detailed structural representations for a range of amorphous quaternary CaO-MgO-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-SiO{sub 2} (CMAS) and ternary CaO-Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}-SiO{sub 2} (CAS) glasses. Comparison of the simulation results with select experimental X-ray and neutron total scattering and literature data reveals that the MD-generated structures have captured the key structural features of these CMAS and CAS glasses. Based on the MD-generated structural representations, we have developed two structural descriptors, specifically (i) average metal oxide dissociation energy (AMODE) and (ii) average self-diffusion coefficient (ASDC) of all the atoms at melting. Both structural descriptors are seen to more accurately predict the relative glass reactivity than the commonly used degree of depolymerization parameter, especially for the eight synthetic CAS glasses that span a wide compositional range. Hence these descriptors hold great promise for predicting CMAS and CAS glass reactivity in alkaline environments from compositional information.
