Recycling Perspectives of Electric Arc Furnace Slag in the United States: A Review

This article presents a comprehensive review of electric arc furnace (EAF) slag recycling in the United States, examining its classification and the associated challenges and opportunities of its industrial use. The study affirms EAF slag's nonhazardous status. Here, the main challenges identified in EAF slag applications include substantial variations in composition and volume instability during/after hydration. Analysis of the U.S. recycling practices reveals that EAF slag is predominantly reused, with minimal landfill disposal. However, its prevalent use as a low value-added aggregate in construction applications underscores the industry's ongoing challenge to get additional value from EAF slag recycling. Despite these challenges, the study highlights a great potential for increased value extraction from EAF slag recycling. Beyond conventional applications as a clinker material for the cement industry, the review explores modern technologies for steelmaking slag recycling, revealing options for recovering valuable metals such as Cr, V, Mo, and Fe through methods such as leaching, reduction, and oxidation.

Identification of Collectible Items in the Rancor Microworld Simulator Compared to Full-scope Studies

Most studies collecting reliability data in human reliability analysis (HRA) have concentrated on research using full-scope simulators and actual operators. However, several researchers have found that there are challenges to collecting the variety of items as well as the amount of data needed to support HRA. As an opposite and complementing approach to the full-scope study, Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has developed a simplified simulator, i.e., Rancor Microworld, for generating HRA data based on student subjects. This paper aims to identify collectible items in Rancor Microworld versus full-scope simulators. In this paper, collectible items and their different analysis levels in Rancor Microworld are identified in comparison with full-scope simulators. Then, how to treat the items is suggested with experiment directions that will be treated in the future.

Dynamic instructions for Lock-out Tag-out

Lock-out tag-out (LOTO) instructions protect personnel from un-expected re-energization or start-up of equipment that is under maintenance. Even though there is rigorous training associated with LOTO activities, inci-dents still occur. Idaho National Laboratory is researching and developing dynamic LOTO instructions, which supports automatic place keeping, per-sonnel working on multiple instructions, and multiple work groups complet-ing the same instructions. Researchers identified user needs through subject matter expert interviews, observations, and classroom training. Failing to identify potential hazards during LOTO can cause injury or death to person-nel. Dynamic instructions can provide planning, incorporate supplemental documentation into the instruction, and improve instruction compliance. Combining these functions may lead to clearer, more applicable instructions which addresses the reason for compliance issues with current paper-based procedures.

Formative vs. Summative Dependence in Human Reliability Analysis

Dependence in human reliability analysis (HRA) is the concept that once an initial human error has occurred, subsequent human errors are more likely. The approach almost universally adopted in HRA was first introduced in the Technique for Human Error Rate Prediction (THERP). In THERP, calculated human error probabilities (HEPs) are adjusted for dependence in the final step of quantification. This final adjustment for dependence involves anchoring the HEP to a set of values corresponding to low through complete dependence. The effect is to increase the HEP. In this paper, we propose formative dependence, which occurs at the onset of quantification. We demonstrate that dependence should be considered earlier in the calculation process, because it is not actually necessary to calculate the HEP when it is subsequently overridden by the dependence anchors. By applying dependence first in the calculation, processing steps can be eliminated, making for more efficient analysis.

Decision-making Framework to Support the End-of-Life Management of High-Activity Radioactive Sources

Sealed radioactive sources are used for an extremely wide range of purposes, including as radiation sources in various nuclear facilities, universities, hospitals, biomedical and industrial applications, as well as for geological prospecting and exploration. The proper management of these sealed radioactive sources once they have reached their end-of-life is still a global challenge. Very few field-tested Mobile Hot Cells (MHC) exist in the world to support the end-of-life management of disused high-activity radioactive sources. One of the critical challenges that a source recovery team encounters on each site is to find adequate space, and access to that space to complete the staging and recapture process with a MHC; this process is tedious, uncertain, and time-consuming. Therefore, it is essential to understand the planning and management of the MHC setup and takedown. Currently, there isn't an single capable planning tool that will provide an effective medium to plan, inform, educate, and communicate knowledge about the environment where the MHC will be deployed. We present a novel approach for the planning and management of the deployment of the MHC to several different sites that relies on technology. Furthermore, this planning tool will support collaboration, promote information sharing, and foster better decision making processes, resulting in a more efficient, and reliable setup and source recovery with the MHC.

Holographic entanglement distillation from the surface state correspondence

We study correlations between geometric subfactors living on the Ryu-Takayanagi surface that bounds the entanglement wedge. Using the surface-state correspondence and the bit threads program, we are able to calculate mutual information and conditional mutual information between subfactors. This enables us to count the shared Bell pairs between subfactors, and we propose an entanglement distillation procedure over these subsystems via a SWAP gate protocol. We comment on extending to multipartite entanglement.

Workforce planning: a review of methodologies

Workforce planning deals with determining the number of employees and associated skills necessary to meet the future operational needs of an organization. A workforce system consists of six elements: recruitment, attrition, promotion, training, retention, and scheduling. Historically, several workforce modeling and analysis methodologies have been developed to capture these elements. This paper reviews the results of workforce and manpower models published within peer-reviewed literature between 1959 and 2021 to provide an in-depth analysis of current models. The focus of this review is on analytical, simulation, and empirical models found in literature that were collected based on a citation requirement and keyword search criteria. Results demonstrate the trends in workforce modeling research and discuss the common uses of each model type and the advantages/disadvantages related to each model. Based on the common attributes of workforce systems, the discussion focuses on the most frequently used model type for each element and the best use for each model. Lastly, recommendations are made for the development of workforce models that allow the most comprehensive view of the workforce systems of the future.

Expert Text Analysis in the Inclusion of History and Philosophy of Science in Higher Education

The history and philosophy of science (HPS) plays a special role in education. An elective HPS course onthe philosophy of scientific experimentation for young scientists and graduate students of natural scienceis presented. The course bears a pragmatic character, and its main aims include the development of criticalthinking (CT), familiarization with philosophical problems in the relevant areas of knowledge, and thecultivation of a taste for reflective, critical analysis, both individual and group-based, which contributes todeeper understanding of the features of scientific practice in the context of modern complex groupcooperation. Students are offered a classical HPS program that included debates on the relationship betweenempiricism and rationalism, the role of Kant’s transcendental philosophy, modern topics associated withthe practical success of rationalism in the emergence of modern natural science, and the theory-ladennessof experimentation. Particular attention during the course is paid to the problems of megascience, theinclusion of which is justified by the specifics of the students’ engagement with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Emphasis is placed on the structure and typology of the collectivesubject in the modern educational process as well as in experimental practice. Lessons on the methodologyof expert text analysis (META), which are aimed at the development of critical thinking skills and thecreation of an interdisciplinary discussion space, are included in the course and relied on the example ofthe history and philosophy of high energy physics to motivate professional reflection. META classesincluded in the course prepare graduate students for teamwork in big science, proto-megascience, andmegascience. The course offers practical recommendations that could be applied to students’ own researchand could be useful for practitioners.

Material Goals Towards Equity Along the STEM and LGBTQIA+ Spectra

Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) is an exciting interdisciplinary field that promises to secure an understanding of materials underpin technologies that enable modern life. We often champion the properties of the materials we study, we must remember that these advances are afforded by the people ‘behind’ the research and applications. This warrants us to consider the impact of our academic & industrial research climate, and whether there is equal access/support to participate. As such, this article focusses on disparities for members of the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and more) community. Furthermore, we hope to support actions that create a more equitable community, where there is a sense of inclusion and belonging and power shared amongst LGBTQIA+ and non-LGBTQIA+ identifying individuals.

Aviation security screening optimizer for risk and throughput (ASSORT)

The increasing number of air travelers each year presents a challenge as many airports are near their capacity in terms of resources and space for passenger screening. Fortunately, advancements in technologies like next-generation millimeter wave scanning offer solutions to ease this strain. The focus remains on managing risk while enhancing the passenger experience for the traveling public. The risk model presented in this paper known as the Aviation Security Screening Optimizer for Risk and Throughput (ASSORT) is designed to assess risk-based approaches for passenger screening and checkpoint operations. Additionally, ASSORT is exploring various traveler categories — general, trusted, and trusted-plus — along with different checkpoint screening Concept of Operations tailored to each traveler type. For instance, travelers with a higher trust level may experience fewer screening technologies, resulting in quicker processing times at the checkpoint. The output of ASSORT provides a risk score for predefined threat scenarios, as well as the overall risk to the checkpoint, aircraft, and airport by traveler type. In conclusion, benefits of using this tool include assessing the trade-offs between the overall risk associated with checkpoints and the throughput rate of passengers screened. We show for example the impact that different passenger volumes at the checkpoint can have on risk.
