Distorted reflector antenna performance prediction technique

The application of a 3-D curve-fit technique to the electromagnetic analysis of reflector antennas is presented. the reflector antennas are described by the coordinates of an irregular distribution of measured points on the reflector surface. The reflector antenna analysis method used to calculate radiation patterns is geometric-optics with aperture-integration since an efficient and accurate computer code was readily available for modification.

Performance of wind turbines in a turbulent atmosphere

The effect of atmospheric turbulence on the power fluctuations of large wind turbines was studied. The significance of spatial non-uniformities of the wind is emphasized. The turbulent wind with correlation in time and space is simulated on the computer by Shinozukas method. The wind turbulence is modelled according to the Davenport spectrum with an exponential spatial correlation function. The rotor aerodynamics is modelled by simple blade element theory. Comparison of the spectrum of power output signal between 1-D and 3-D turbulence, shows the significant power fluctuations centered around the blade passage frequency.

Phenomenological study of subsonic turbulent flow over a swept rearward-facing step

The phenomenology of turbulent, subsonic flow over a swept, rearward-facing step was studied. Effects of variations in step height, sweep angle, base geometry, and end conditions on the 3-D separated flow were examined. The separated flow was visualized using smoke wire, oil drop, and surface tuft techniques. Measurements include surface pressure, reattachment distance and swirl angle. Results indicate: (1) model/test section coupling affects the structure of the separated flow, but spanwise end conditions do not; (2) the independence principle is evidently valid for sweep angles up to 38 deg; (3) a sweep angle/swirl angle correlation exists; and (4) base modifications can significantly reduce the reattachment distance.

Computations of soot and and NO sub x emissions from gas turbine combustors

An analytical program was conducted to compute the soot and NOx emissions from a combustor and the radiation heat transfer to the combustor walls. The program involved the formulation of an emission and radiation model and the incorporation of this model into the Garrett 3-D Combustor Perfomance Computer Program. Computations were performed for the idle, cruise, and take-off conditions of a JT8D can combustor. The predicted soot and NOx emissions and the radiation heat transfer to the combustor walls agree reasonably well with the limited experimental data available.

Unsteady rotor aerodynamics using a vortex panel method

The problem of the potential incompressible flow about a helicopter rotor blade is solved using an unsteady vortex-panel method where the mutual interaction between the blade and the distorting free wake is taken into account. The present method alleviates the need to rely upon measured-wake geometries or p5escribed-wake models in order to calculate the airloads. A computer program has been developed which is capable of predicting the geometry of the time-dependent three-dimensional (3-D) wake and the instantaneous loadings for a single blade in hover, climb, and forward flight. The solution is obtained by using a time-accurate step-by-step procedure. The complex-wake geometry at any time is presented graphically with a computer graphics system. Calculated results are compared with published data for a rotor blade in both hover and forward flight. The code has also been applied to the study of the effect of changing blade tip geometry.

Antimotion-sickness efficacy of scopolamine 12 and 72 hours after transdermal administration

The antimotion sickness remedy, transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine, administered in this experiment was scheduled to deliver 1.0 mg of scopolamine over a period of 3 d, and this paper compares its efficacy 12 and 72 h after administration. In a double-blind study, six male college students were individually exposed to a standardized provocative test in a slow rotation room after six apparently identical treatments comprising four placebos and two medications. Efficacy was categorized as beneficial, inconsequential, or detrimental. None of the responses was detrimental. Following the first administration of the therapeutic system, there were four beneficial responses after 12 h but none was beneficial after 72 h. Following the second treatment regimen, there were four beneficial responses after 12 h and three beneficial responses after 72 h. Great individual differences were demonstrated, two subjects accounting for six beneficial responses and two accounting for only one beneficial response. The difference in efficacy after 12 and 72 h has practical and theoretical significance.

An analysis of aerodynamic requirements for coordinated bank-to-turn autopilots

Two planar missile airframes were compared having the potential for improved bank-to-turn control but having different aerodynamic properties. The comparison was made with advanced level autopilots using both linear and nonlinear 3-D aerodynamic models to obtain realistic missile body angular rates and control surface incidence. Cortical cross-coupling effects are identified and desirable aerodynamics are recommended for improved coordinated (BTT) (CBTT) performance. In addition, recommendations are made for autopilot control law analyses and design techniques for improving CBTT performance.

Tita: discovery of carbon monoxide in its atmosphere

The 3-D rotation-vibration band of carbon monoxide was identified in the near-infrared spectrum of Titan. A preliminary mixing ratio of CO/N2 = 0.00006 was determined. This result supports the probable detection of CO2 by Samuelson et al and strengthens possible analogies between the atmosphere of Titan and conditions on the primitive Earth.

Remanent magnetization and three-dimensional density model of the Kentucky anomaly region

Existing software was modified to handle 3-D density and magnetization models of the Kentucky body and is being tested. Gravity and magnetic anomaly data sets are ready for use. A preliminary block model is under construction using the 1:1,000,000 maps. An x-y grid to overlay the 1:2,500,000 Albers maps and keyed to the 1:1,000,000 scale block models was created. Software was developed to generate a smoothed MAGSAT data set over this grid; this is to be input to an inversion program for generating the regional magnetization map. The regional scale 1:2,500,000 map mosaic is being digitized using previous magnetization models, the U.S. magnetic anomaly map, and regional tectonic maps as a guide.

A viscous shock-layer flowfield analysis by an explicit-implicit method

An implicit analogue of a widely used explicit method to external axisymmetric laminar flows with strong entropy gradients is extended. The details of the "numerics" of the implicit part are provided in a body oriented coordinate system with a moving outer (shock) boundary during the transient part of the solutions. The limiting values of the Courant number are obtained when the shock boundary is treated explicitly. The solution algorithm outlined includes the treatment of the source term associated with the equations in weak conservation form. From the results obtained for two sample problems, it becomes clear that accuracy of predictions is, indeed, very good at higher values of the Courant number. There is a significant saving in overall computing time, depending on the Courant number used and the flow Reynolds number. These properties combined with the simplicity of programming the implicit analog may appeal to researchers for using it in the analysis of 3-D flow problems.

Digital image processing of flow visualization photographs

This paper is concerned with the propagation of laser light through a slab of a randomly varying medium. A theoretical analysis is presented which relates the spectrum of the recorded-intensity field some distance downstream of the medium to the spectrum of the index-of-refraction field. For a homogeneous and isotropic random field, the 3-D spectrum of the medium is obtained from the 2-D spectrum of the photograph by dividing each component of the spectrum by the frequency raised to the fourth power. Free-space propagation outside the random medium is accounted for by a scaling factor. Experimental results are presented which support the theoretical analysis. The nonintrusive diagnostic technique presented here is applicable to photographs which contain partially developed caustic networks.

Three-dimensional compressible viscous analysis of mixer nozzles

An analysis-based design procedure for compound-mixer exhaust nozzles is presented and compared to test data. The design approach is based on two numerical solutions to the 3-D viscous compressible Navier-Stokes equations: an equation splitting technique used for the analysis of the core and bypass flow, and a parabolic marching scheme used in the analysis of the mixing duct. The selection of the analytical methods through test data comparisons and their coupling into an integrated design system are discussed. NASA test data is used to demonstrate the validity of the computations from the exhaust system rating station, upstream of the mixer lobe, to the nozzle throat. An estimate is made of the savings in development time and cost utilizing the new procedure.

X-ray imaging of extended objects using nonoverlapping redundant array

A common problem associated with X-ray imaging using coded apertures is the reconstruction of low-intensity extended objects. In the decoding of such objects, the overlapping images from the multiple pinholes give rise to noise cross talk and, in many cases, also to signal cross talk. In this paper, an alternate approach is proposed based on the principle used in an earlier (Yin et al., 1980) laboratory device for the real-time viewing of X-ray objects. It is shown that with this approach, the nonoverlapping redundant array, the sidelobes in the point spread function are not eliminated but merely displaced through a suitable choice of geometry. In this manner, the sidelobes no longer contribute to the background in the vicinity of a reconstructed image, and both signal and noise cross talks are completely eliminated. It may now be possible to reconstruct extended X-ray objects in 3-D by simple optical correlation and tomographically by a computer.

The GPRIME approach to finite element modeling

GPRIME, an interactive modeling system, runs on the CDC 6000 computers and the DEC VAX 11/780 minicomputer. This system includes three components: (1) GPRIME, a user friendly geometric language and a processor to translate that language into geometric entities, (2) GGEN, an interactive data generator for 2-D models; and (3) SOLIDGEN, a 3-D solid modeling program. Each component has a computer user interface of an extensive command set. All of these programs make use of a comprehensive B-spline mathematics subroutine library, which can be used for a wide variety of interpolation problems and other geometric calculations. Many other user aids, such as automatic saving of the geometric and finite element data bases and hidden line removal, are available. This interactive finite element modeling capability can produce a complete finite element model, producing an output file of grid and element data.

Algebraic grid generation with corner singularities

A simple noniterative algebraic procedure is presented for generating smooth computational meshes on a quadrilateral topology. Coordinate distribution and normal derivative are provided on all boundaries, one of which may include a slope discontinuity. The boundary conditions are sufficient to guarantee continuity of global meshes formed of joined patches generated by the procedure. The method extends to 3-D. The procedure involves a synthesis of prior techniques stretching functions, cubic blending functions, and transfinite interpolation - to which is added the functional form of the corner solution. The procedure introduces the concept of generalized blending, which is implemented as an automatic scaling of the boundary derivatives for effective interpolation. Some implications of the treatment at boundaries for techniques solving elliptic PDE's are discussed in an Appendix.

Dilution zone mixing studies

The objectives and status of a project to investigate various aspects of the jet in a confined cross flow problem are outlined. The experiments performed thus far dealt primarily with a single row of jets mixing into an isothermal flow in a constant cross section duct. Variations in the mixing were observed as a function of jet to mainstream momentum ratio, orifice size, and spacing. The current experiments examine perturbations of this problem characteristic to gas turbine combustion chambers, namely: flow area convergence, nonisothermal mainstream flow, and opposed in line and staggered injection. An empirical model was developed to describe the observed temperature distributions. The current interactive code provides a 3-D pictorial representation of the temperature, as given by these correlations, for any user specified downstream location, flow, and orifice parameters.

HOST structural analysis program overview

Hot section components of aircraft gas turbine engines are subjected to severe thermal structural loading conditions, especially during the start up and take off portions of the engine cycle. The most severe and damaging stresses and strains are those induced by the steep thermal gradients induced during the start up transient. These transient stresses and strains are also the most difficult to predict, in part because of the temperature gradients and distributions are not well known or readily predictable, and also because the cyclic elastic viscoplastic behavior of the materials at these extremes of temperature and strain are not well known or readily predictable. A broad spectrum of structures related technology programs is underway to address these deficiencies. One element of the structures program is developing improved time varying thermal mechanical load models for the entire engine mission cycle from start up to shutdown. Another major part of the program is the development of new and improved nonlinear 3-D finite elements and associated structural analysis programs, including the development of temporal elements with time dependent properties to account for creep effects in the materials and components.

The 3D inelastic analysis methods for hot section components

The objective of this research is to develop an analytical tool capable of economically evaluating the cyclic time dependent plasticity which occurs in hot section engine components in areas of strain concentration resulting from the combination of both mechanical and thermal stresses. The techniques developed must be capable of accommodating large excursions in temperatures with the associated variations in material properties including plasticity and creep. The overall objective of this proposed program is to develop advanced 3-D inelastic structural/stress analysis methods and solution strategies for more accurate and yet more cost effective analysis of combustors, turbine blades, and vanes. The approach will be to develop four different theories, one linear and three higher order with increasing complexities including embedded singularities.
