Earth orbital space stations modular design, discussing space shuttle use, crew training and program management
The use of satellites in the areas of communications, meteorology, geodesy, navigation, air traffic control, and earth resources technology is discussed. NASA contributions to various programs are reviewed.
The response of the cardiovascular system to a known exercise workload is used as index of the general physical condition of crewmembers during long duration space flight. Day-to-day evaluations of pulse rates before and after exercise periods were not remarkable. The response of the cardiovascular system to a calibrated workload was relatively constant for a given individual during space flights of as many as 14 days in connection with the Gemini Program.
The research concerned with the liaison, interface, coupling, and technology transfer processes that occur in research and development is reported. Overviews of the functions of communication and coupling in the R and D processes, and the theoretical considerations of coupling, communication, and values are presented along with descriptions of the field research program and the instrumentation.
The methods are presented by which the scales and indicators are combined to provide measures of the variables used in the similarity propositions. These variables are constructs employed to describe the relationships among various phenomena occurring in R and D organizations. The character of these constructs as revealed by the characteristics of the measures derived from response patterns is presented. The reliability and validity of the measures are considered, and test procedures are discussed.
A water cooled garment was constructed and used to study the characteristics of independent regional cooling of the body in contrast to the current practice of uniform cooling. The cooling pads in the garment were grouped to provide independent control of water inlet temperatures and flow rates to six regions: head, upper torso, lower torso, arms, thighs, and lower legs. Experiments with and without the cooling suit were conducted with five test subjects standing and walking on a treadmill on selected schedules. Steady state and, to a lesser extent, transient characteristics were obtained.
Plots are presented which show the distribution of oxygen between liquid lithium and tantalum or niobium, and between liquid sodium and tantalum at elevated temperatures. Additional plots showing the composition of the gas phase above the solutions of oxygen and alkali metal are presented. The use of the plots is illustrated by an example tantalum heat pipe filled with lithium.
Feasibility has been shown for underwater transmission of physiological signals, using frequency modulation of carriers transmitted by return-current-density methods, as part of a personal biotelemetry system. In the prototype system, a standard IRIG subcarrier frequency (2300 Hz) was used. Power requirements, antenna design, and signal attenuation are compatible with free-ranging diving activity at distances up to 15 meters from the receiver. Extrapolation from this study and further developments are expected to substantially increase the range. Advantages of this system include subcarrier compatibility with standard IRIG demodulators using channels 1 through 10, the absence of highly specialized antenna requirements, and reasonable attenuation characteristics for transmission through the turbidity of typical seawater. Moreover, the system would not appear to be depth limited, and to be compatible with use of high-powered transponders of the same type for long-distance transmission, with or without further encoding.

The basic unsteady aerodynamic environment of the rotary wing is summarized. Some of the observed trends in the state of the art are discussed. Some of the research needs that will require attention are reported. A review of a number of research investigations as a part of a joint NASA/Army rotorcraft project is presented. The research is directed toward achieving a better understanding of rotor unsteady airfoils. The investigations include: (1) rotor maneuver loads; (2) level flight and maneuver wake prediction; (3) tip-vortex flow; (4) blade-vortex interactions; (5) dynamic stall; (6) transient Mach number air loads; and (7) development of variable geometry rotors.
Ionization energies of organic semiconductors were determined using single crystals of the material. The theory of the method is essentially that of Millikan's oil drop experiment. The technique employed in the experiment is based on the electrostatic method of balancing a charged particle in an electric field against the force of gravity for different excitation energies above the threshold value, and from an estimate of the balancing voltages, read off the ionization energy from the intercept of the energy axis in a plot wavelength corresponding to the balancing potential for the incident radiation of wavelength. In the modified technique which is adopted in the present experimental investigation, a small single crystal is suspended by a fine quartz fiber between two vertical capacitor plates to which a suitable high voltage is applied.
