V-HAMSTeR v1.0.0

V-HAMSTeR is a bioinformatics software tool designed to predict the hosts of viruses directly from genomic sequences. It can be used by researchers to predict animal, prokaryotic, plant, protist or fungal viral hosts including viruses that may be fragmented or discovered in environmental metagenomic datasets. Features & Uses: The software employs a novel dual-stream deep learning architecture that dynamically fuses implicit sequence embeddings from a genomic foundation model with 13 explicit, handcrafted biological features (e.g., coding density and strand switch rates). To ensure maximum reliability, V=HAMSTeR deploys a 5-fold deep ensemble calibrated via Joint Temperature Scaling, providing users with statistically rigorous confidence probabilities. It also features an automated sequence chunking and mean-pooling module to seamlessly process variable-length contigs. Advantages Over Similar Technologies: Existing tools (e.g., IPEV, RNAVirHost) typically rely on either basic k-mers or isolated neural networks. V-HAMSTeR's hybrid architecture captures both broad genomic context and specific biological motifs that standalone foundation models often miss. Furthermore, unlike competitor tools that struggle with incomplete data or exhibit extreme overconfidence, V-HAMSTeR is explicitly benchmarked and mathematically calibrated for fragmented assemblies (1kb–10kb). This makes it uniquely robust, accurate, and trustworthy for the messy reality of real-world environmental viromics.

SEFOR Core I-E

This repository contains the VTB model developed for the Southwest Experimental Fast Oxide Reactor (SEFOR) core configuration I-E using the NEAMS tools. The MOOSE Reactor Module was employed to set up the geometry mesh, MC2-3 was applied to generate multigroup cross sections at various temperatures, and Griffin was used to calculate the k-eff values of Core I-E across these temperature conditions. To validate the deterministic results from Griffin, reference solutions were obtained with the Monte Carlo code Shift. The reactivity feedback was then derived and compared against SEFOR experimental data from isothermal tests in order to assess the performance of Griffin. Reproducing these results requires licensed access to several code systems, including Shift, Griffin, and MC2-3. Instructions for obtaining and accessing these codes can be found at the following locations: https://www.ornl.gov/scale/releases for SCALE/Shift, https://mooseframework.inl.gov/ncrc/applications/ncrc_root_griffin.html for Griffin, and https://www.anl.gov/nse/mc23 for MC2-3.

Measurements of the vertical profile of water vapor abundance in the Martian atmosphere from Mars Observer

An analysis is presented of the Pressure Modulator Infrared Radiometer (PMIRR) capabilities along with how the vertical profiles of water vapor will be obtained. The PMIRR will employ filter and pressure modulation radiometry using nine spectral channels, in both limb scanning and nadir sounding modes, to obtain daily, global maps of temperature, dust extinction, condensate extinction, and water vapor mixing ratio profiles as a function of pressure to half scale height or 5 km vertical resolution. Surface thermal properties will also be mapped, and the polar radiactive balance will be monitored.

Low data rate coherent optical link demonstration using frequency stabilized solid state lasers

A low data rate laboratory heterodyne link demonstration operating at 1.06 micron using frequency stabilized Nd:YAG lasers was implemented. The data was modulated onto the optical carrier at 100 kbps using binary pulse position modulation. Phase coherent reception was achieved by closing the receiver phase tracking loop around the piezo-electric and temperature-tuned local oscillator laser. Initial frequency acquisition was accomplished by linearly scanning the LO frequency over the uncertainty range while a combined frequency and phase tracking loop searches for a lock indicator signal. The link performance was experimentally evaluated and compared to the theoretical predictions.

The Giotto Extended Mission (GEM) - High risk, high payoff

In February 1990, ESA began reactivation of the Giotto spacecraft, which had been dormant for the previous four years, via the omnidirectional low-gain antenna mounted atop the Giotto. By the end of April 1990, spacecraft temperatures had been reduced to levels at which the experiments could be activated; of the original complement of ten experiment modules, the magnetometer, energetic particle analyzer, and optical probe experiment were fully functional, and an additional three instruments were partly damaged but usable. A mission that targetted Comet Grigg-Skjellerup 214 million km from the earth was then put into effect.

Device and method for determining freezing points

A freezing point method and device (10) are disclosed. The method and device pertain to an inflection point technique for determining the freezing points of mixtures. In both the method and device (10), the mixture is cooled to a point below its anticipated freezing point and then warmed at a substantially linear rate. During the warming process, the rate of increase of temperature of the mixture is monitored by, for example, thermocouple (28) with the thermocouple output signal being amplified and differentiated by a differentiator (42). The rate of increase of temperature data are analyzed and a peak rate of increase of temperature is identified. In the preferred device (10) a computer (22) is utilized to analyze the rate of increase of temperature data following the warming process. Once the maximum rate of increase of temperature is identified, the corresponding temperature of the mixture is located and earmarked as being substantially equal to the freezing point of the mixture. In a preferred device (10), the computer (22), in addition to collecting the temperature and rate of change of temperature data, controls a programmable power supply (14) to provide a predetermined amount of cooling and warming current to thermoelectric modules (56).

Photovoltaic-assisted heat pump water heater system and method

A solar power system has a photovoltaic module that supplies electrical current derived from sunlight to a heater system of a hot water tank. The heater system uses the electrical energy from the photovoltaic module, and optionally also from a local power grid, to heat water up to a selected maximum stored hot water temperature. Control circuitry senses when the level of electrical power is below a threshold solar-power level, and in response sets the stored hot water temperature for the heater system to a first lower temperature value. The control circuitry also senses when the level of electrical power is above the threshold solar-power level, an in response sets the stored hot water temperature for the heater system to a second elevated temperature value higher than the lower temperature, making advantageous use of solar power when available. A mixing unit adds cold water to set the dispensed water temperature.

Lifting Triplet Degeneracy Through Organic‐Cation Driven Structural Perturbation to Modulate Luminescence of Sb 3+ ‐Doped Double Perovskite

The spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and the Jahn-Teller effect (JTE) alter the orbital degeneracy in materials, leading to unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties essential in spintronics, quantum computing, and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, the study employs luminescent p-xylylenediammonium (PXA) instead of Cs+ in Cs2NaInCl6 to yield 2D Sb3+-doped (PXA)2NaInCl8 double perovskite and demonstrates a non-degenerate triplet state resulting from enhanced JTE in the strong SOC regime, featuring distinct emission centers. Consequently, a broadband emission from both PXA and [SbCl6]3− spans the entire spectrum (350–750 nm), representing a rare single-source multi-emissive 2D perovskite. With in-depth comparative structural, temperature-dependent photo-physical, and theoretical studies, it is elucidated that the synergistic effect of SOC and JTE on the Eg and T2g lattice modes modulate the electronic structure of [SbCl6]3− by splitting the doubly degenerate E levels of 3 T$^{*}_{1u}$ into non-degenerate states. The physical model, supported by theoretical studies, explains the energy level splitting required to realize two kinds of radiative minima in the relaxed excited state.

Distinctive Pattern of Global Warming in Ocean Heat Content

Abstract Huge heat anomalies in the atmosphere and ocean in recent years are not yet explained. Strong characteristic patterns in temperatures for upper layers of the ocean occurred from 2000 to 2023 in the presence of global warming from increasing atmospheric greenhouse gases. Here, we show that the deep tropics are warming, although sharply modulated by El Niño–Southern Oscillation events, with strong heating in the extratropics near 40°N and 40°–45°S but little heating near 20°N and 25°–30°S. The heating is most clearly manifested in zonal-mean ocean heat content and is evident in sea surface temperatures. The strongest heating is in the Southern Hemisphere, where aerosol effects are small. Estimates are made of the contributions to heating of top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation, atmospheric energy transports, surface fluxes of energy, and redistribution of energy by surface winds and ocean currents. The patterns of change are not directly related to TOA radiation but are evident in net surface energy fluxes and inferred ocean heat transports, underscoring their coupled origin. Changes in the atmospheric circulation through a poleward shift in ocean jet streams and storm tracks are reflected in surface wind-driven ocean Ekman transports. As well as human-induced climate change, internal natural variability is likely in play. Hence, the atmosphere and ocean currents are systematically redistributing heat from global warming, profoundly affecting local climates. Significance Statement As the climate changes, it has been difficult to discern meaningful patterns. Distinctive patterns of change have occurred in the ocean when examined as zonal averages around latitude bands. Most excess heat from global warming resides in the ocean and, since 2005, has become focused into bands near 40°N and 40°S, with little net warming in the subtropics. The strongest warming is in the Southern Hemisphere, although sea surface temperatures have increased more in the Northern Hemisphere. Changes in the atmospheric circulation through a poleward shift in the jet stream and storm tracks are primarily responsible along with corresponding changes in ocean currents. These changes are linked through surface exchanges of energy via heat, moisture, and wind stress.

Packaged SMIP Smart Connector for Ectron Computers

The project provides appropriate software modules, which allow to represent a physical oven as a virtual oven model. For that a virtual oven model is developed, which defines oven parameters like temperature, power consumption but also the door status and the humidity. To connect a real oven to the virtual model for monitoring and control multiple sensors are used to collect data. Using a MQTT based data connection the measured parameters are send to the CESMII environment for further processing and monitoring. Within this project the CESMII model for the general oven was developed and provided. Further the sensors were connected to the actual oven. The sensor data is collected via means of a MQTT based data transfer protocol to a gateway module. The gateway module then translates and transfers the collected data to the actual CESMII oven model.
