Single-screen triband FSS with double-square-loop elements

A single-screen double-square-loop (DSL) frequency selective surface (FSS) has been developed to multiplex the three frequency (S, X, and Ku) bands for NASA's CRAF/CASSINI mission. This triband DSL FSS reflects the X-band (7.2 and 8.4 GHz) waves and transmits the S-band (2.3 GHz) and the Ku-band (13.8 GHz) waves. A good agreement between predicted and measured transmission performance is found on a 0.001-in.-thick Kapton with/without a flat Kevlar honeycomb sandwich panel. It is found that the single-screen DSL FSS with/without the Kevlar honeycomb has a resonant frequency of 8.4 GHz for incident angle steered from normal to 45 deg and for both TE and TM polarizations.

Effects of T-tabs and large deflections in double cantilever beam specimen tests

A simple strength of materials analysis was developed for a double-cantilever beam (DCB) specimen to account for geometric nonlinearity effects due to large deflections and T-tabs. A new DCB data analysis procedure was developed to include the effects of these nonlinearities. The results of the analysis were evaluated by DCB tests performed for materials having a wide range of toughnesses. The materials used in the present study were T300/5208, IM7/8551-7, and AS4/PEEK. Based on the present analysis, for a typical deflection/crack length ratio of 0.3 (for AS4/PEEK), T-tabs and large deflections cause a 15 and 3 percent error, respectively, in the computer Mode I strain energy release rate. Design guidelines for DCB specimen thickness and T-tab height were also developed in order to keep errors due to these nonlinearities within 2 percent. Based on the test results, for both hinged and tabbed specimens, the effects of large deflection on the Mode I fracture toughness (G sub Ic) were almost negligible (less than 1 percent) in the case of T300/5208 and IM7/8551-7; however, AS4/PEEK showed a 2 to 3 percent effect. The effects of T-tabs G sub Ic were more significant for all the materials with T300/5208 showing a 5 percent error, IM7/8551-7 a 15 percent error, and, AS4/PEEK a 20 percent error.

State-to-state rotational energy-transfer measurements in the nu(2) = 1 state of ammonia by infrared-infrared double resonance

The state-resolved rotational (R-R, R-T) energy transfer in (N-14)H3 (for NH3-NH3 and NH3-Ar collisions) was studied using an IR double-resonance laser spectroscopic technique. Measurements of both the total rate of depopulation by collisions, and the rates of transfer into specific final rovibrational states (v,J,K) were performed using time-resolved tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy. A kinetic master-equation analysis of time-resolved level populatons was carried out, yielding state-to-state rate constants and propensity rules for NH3-NH3 and NH3-Ar collisions.

A re-investigation of the 'double dawn' event recorded in the Bamboo Annals

An allusion to a 'double dawn' phenomenon in an ancient Chinese chronicle, which has been identified as caused by a sunrise eclipse occurring in 899 BC, is discussed. This event has been regarded as of considerable importance in the investigation of earth's past rotation. It is shown that an eclipse interpretation is implausible, not least because the eclipse in question was only annular.

On steady field-aligned double-adiabatic flow

The paper summarizes the four general double-adiabatic invariants governing ideal MHD flow in a narrow tube and renders them in a form suitable for the calculation of flow in tubes of nonconstant cross-sectional area. Results for converging-diverging flux tubes are developed and compared to single-adiabatic results which are identical to those for ordinary gasdynamic flow. It is found that in certain parameter regimes the governing equation for the vector potential is elliptic and can be reduced to Laplace's equation by simple stretching of one coordinate. In other regimes the equation is hyperbolic, indicating the presence of wave patterns. The relevance of these results to flow over magnetopause undulations, including flux transfer events, is discussed.

Double lunar swingby and Lissajous trajectory design for the WIND mission

Two alternative mission profiles are presented for the WIND mission whose baseline design includes two years in a double lunar swingby (DLS) orbit followed by one year in a Lissajous orbit about the sun-earth L1 libration point. The first alternative uses a half-month high-inclination transfer orbit between two lunar gravity assists to change the initial sunward DLS orbit to a DLS orbit in the geomagnetic tail region. The second alternative uses a direct insertion from launch into a large-amplitude Lissajous orbit followed by a sunward DLS orbit.

Double-Lap Shear Test For Honeycomb Core

Double-lap test measures shear strength of panel made of honeycomb core with 8-ply carbon-fiber/epoxy face sheets. Developed to overcome three principal disadvantages of prior standard single-lap shear test: specimen had to be more than 17 in. long; metal face sheets had to be used; and test introduced torque, with consequent bending and peeling of face sheets and spurious tensile or compressive loading of honeycomb.

Geochemistry of HASP, VLT, and other glasses from double drive tube 79001/2

The Apollo 17 double drive tube 79001/2 (station 9, Van Serg Crater) is distinctive because of its extreme maturity, abundance, and variety of glass clasts. It contains mare glasses of both high Ti and very low Ti (VLT) compositions, and highland glasses of all compositions common in lunar regolith samples: highland basalt (feldspathic; Al2O3 greater than 23 wt percent), KREEP (Al2O3 less than 23 wt percent, K2O greater than 0.25 wt percent), and low-K Fra Mauro (LKFM; Al2O3 less than 23 wt percent, K2O less than 0.25 wt percent). It also contains rare specimens of high-alumina, silica-poor (HASP), and ultra Mg glasses. HASP glasses contain insufficient SiO2 to permit the calculation of a standard norm, and are thought to be the product of volatilization during impact melting. They have been studied by electron microprobe major-element analysis techniques but have not previously been analyzed for trace elements. The samples analyzed for this study were polished grain mounts of the 90-160 micron fraction of four sieved samples from the 79001/2 core (depth range 2.3-11.5 cm). A total of 80 glasses were analyzed by SEM/EDS and electron microprobe, and a subset of 33 of the glasses, representing a wide range of compositional types, was chosen for high-sensitivity INAA. A microdrilling device removed disks (mostly 50-100 micron diameter, weighing approx. 0.1-0.5 micro-g) for INAA. Preliminary data reported here are based only on short counts done within two weeks of irradiation.

Effect of surface tension on the onset of convection in a double-diffusive layer

The effect of surface tension on the stability of a double-diffusive layer is considered using linear stability analysis. The surface tension is assumed to vary linearly with temperature and solute concentration. The eigenvalue problem is solved by the Galerkin method. Results show that the predicted stability boundary based on Marangoni effects alone is completely altered in the presence of buoyancy effects induced by low gravity levels (about 10 exp -5 g). At reduced gravity levels, salt-finger instability may onset in the overstable mode due to the stabilizing effect of surface tension. Fluid properties in terms of the Prandtl and the Lewis numbers have a profound effect on the stability conditions; opposite stability characteristics are found in salt solutions and in molten metals.

Double-diffusive fingering convection in a porous medium

The characteristics of nonlinear two-dimensional horizontally periodic double-diffusive fingering convection in a saturated porous medium is investigated, using the Darcy equation including Brinkman and Forchheimer terms for the momentum equation. To solve the equations and the corresponding initial and boundary conditions, a Galerkin method is applied in the horizontal direction, and a hybrid finite difference method is used in the vertical direction. The developed computer code was used to compute the thermal convection case, and the results were found to be in good agreement with existing results.

Double-peaked broad line emission from the LINER nucleus of NGC 1097

We report the recent appearance of a very broad component in the H-alpha and H-beta emission lines of the weakly active nucleus of the Sersic-Pastoriza galaxy NGC 1097. The FWZI of the broad component is about 21,000 km/s, and its profile is double-peaked; the presence of a blue, featureless continuum in the nucleus is also suggested. The broad component was first observed in H-alpha in November 2, 1991, and confirmed 11 months later. The H-alpha profile and flux did not change in this time interval. Comparison with previously published spectral data indicates that the broad lines have only recently appeared. Together with the relatively high X-ray luminosity and the compact nuclear radio source, our results characterize the presence of a Seyfert 1 nucleus in a galaxy which had previously shown only LINER characteristics. Obscuring material along our line of sight to the nucleus appears to have recently cleared, permitting a direct view of the active nucleus. We discuss two possible structures for the broad line region, biconical outflow and an accretion disk, that could give rise to the observed profile.

Computation of thermochemical nonequilibrium flows around a simple and a double ellipse

The nonequilibrium viscous reactive flows over a simple and a double ellipse at a 30 degree angle of attack were computed. The geometry and the free stream conditions are given by INRIA/GAMNI/SMAI workshop test cases 6.2-2 and 6.2-4. The governing Navier-Stokes equations coupled with thermochemical nonequilibrium processes are solved numerically using a fully coupled, implicit, finite volume technique with a dynamically adaptive grid. The nonequilibrium gas model and the numerical method used in the calculations are briefly described.

The hypersonic double ellipse in rarefied flow

The problem of the hypersonic double ellipse in rarefied flow is treated by a particle method using the collision model first described by McDonald (1988). In the approach used here, the computational overhead is reduced by using simple cubic cells. The problem of the definition of complex geometries is addressed by developing an algorithm to define the relation of a body surface to the network of cells.

Self-replication of chemical systems based on recognition within a double or a triple helix - A realistic hypothesis

A scenario is proposed for the non-enzymatic self-replication of short RNA molecules. The self-replication of an oligopyrimidine strand is considered and the process of template-directed synthesis based on recognition within a double helix is discussed. Replication mechanisms are suggested for selected oligonucleotides. The mechanisms are based on Watson-Crick base pairing between complementary nucleotides as well as Hoogsteen base pairing between a duplex and the complementary third strand. It is suggested that self-replication based on these mechanisms may be accomplished but may result in a substantial amount of misinformation transfer when mixed oligonucleotides are used.

High temperature conductivity of potassium-beta(double prime)-alumina

Potassium beta(double prime)-alumina (BDPA) single crystals have been reported by several groups to leave higher ionic conductivity than sodium BDPA crystals at room temperature, and similar conductivities are obtained at temperatures up to 600-700 K. Potassium BDPA ceramics have been reported to have significantly poorer conductivities than those of sodium BDPA ceramics, but conductivity measurements at temperatures above 625 K have not been reported. In this study, K(+)-BDPA ceramics were prepared from Na(+)-BDPA ceramic using a modified version of the exchange reaction with KCl vapor reported by Crosbie and Tennenhouse (1982), and the conductivity has been measured in K vapor at temperatures up to 1223 K, using the method of Cole et al. (1979). The results indicate reasonable agreement with earlier data on K(+)-BDPA ceramic measured in a liquid K cell, but show that the K(+)-BDPA ceramic's conductivity approaches that of Na(+)-BDPA ceramic at higher temperatures, being within a factor of four at 700 K and 60 percent of the conductivity of Na(+)-BDPA at T over 1000 K. Both four-probe dc conductivity and four probe ac impedance measurements were used to characterize the conductivity. A rather abrupt change in the grain boundary resistance suggesting a possible phase change in the intergranular material, potassium aluminate, is seen in the ac impedance behavior.

Single and double charge transfer of He(2+) ions with molecules at near-thermal energies

Rate coefficients were measured for charge-transfer reactions of He(2+) ions with H2, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O. The experiments were carried out using a selected-ion drift-tube mass spectrometer. Total rate coefficients are found to be very large and are generally close to the limiting Langevin capture rate coefficients or the corresponding ADO-model (Su and Bowers, 1973) coefficients. The product-ion spectra indicate that both single and double charge transfer and possibly transfer ionization occur in these reactions.
