Monitoring of In Situ Remediation Technologies with SIP

Deconvoluting the spectral induced polarization (SIP) signal is critical to developing SIP as a robust technology to monitor delivery and subsurface geochemical reactions. Therefore, the primary goal of this project is to elucidate the sensitivity of SIP to geochemical reactions occurring during subsurface remediation. This document presents progress for fiscal year (FY) 2024 toward field-scale SIP monitoring of amendment delivery and reactivity for subsurface remediation. An interdisciplinary critical review team was assembled to review historical SIP data collected under the Deep Vadose Zone program. Based on feedback from the team additional experiments were designed and initiated for the calcium citrate phosphate technology for in situ formation of apatite and additional analysis was conducted with data from sulfur modified iron experiments to consider the potential for scaling monitoring with SIP to the field. In addition, the team outlined a proposed framework for future evaluation of SIP for environmental remediation monitoring to be implemented over the next 2-3 years.

Evaluating Image Classification Deep Convolutional Neural Network Architectures for Remaining Useful Life Estimation of Turbofan Engines

Accurate estimation of the remaining useful life (RUL) is a key component of condition-based maintenance (CBM) and prognosis and health management (PHM). Data-based models for the estimation of RUL are of particular interest because expert knowledge of systems is not always available, and physical modeling is often not feasible. Additionally, using data-based models, which make decisions based on raw sensor data, allow features to be learned instead of manually determined. In this work, deep convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures are investigated for their ability to estimate the RUL of turbofan engines. To improve the accuracy of the models, CNN architectures, which have proven successful in image classification, are implemented and tested. Specifically, the blocks used in the Visual Geometry Group (VGG) architecture, inception modules used in the GoogLeNet architecture, and residual blocks used in the ResNet architecture are incorporated. To account for varying flight lengths, the input to the models is a window of time series data collected from the engine under test. Window locations at the climb, cruise, and descent stages are considered. To further improve the RUL estimations, multiple overlapping windows at each location are used. This increases the amount of training data available and is found to increase the accuracy of the resulting RUL estimations by averaging the estimates from all overlapping segments. The model is trained and tested using the new Commercial Modular Aero-Propulsion System Simulation (N-CMAPSS) data set, and high prognosis accuracy was achieved. Furthermore, this work expands on the model developed and used in the 2021 PHM Society Data Challenge, which received second place.

Summer 2025 SULI: Nucleus ID, TinyTPC, and Scientific Communication

This paper summarizes my work during the Summer 2025 SULI internship, which focused on two main projects and broader scientific development. The first project involved improving the particle identification (PID) of protons, deuterons, and tritons using PIDA distributions and template fitting, with the goal of modeling nuclear final-state interactions (FSI) and testing the robustness of the method against systematic uncertainties. These techniques pave the way for future application to LArTPC data from the ICARUS detector. The second project centered on the optimization and data-taking of the TinyTPC detector, a compact LArTPC used for high-resolution low-energy measurements. I adjusted gain and threshold parameters, performed hardware validation tests, and developed analysis strategies to extract meaningful physics from collected data. Throughout the summer, I also enhanced my scientific communication and mentorship skills through presentations, collaborative analysis, and peer guidance.

Fixed-Site KAZR b1 Data Processing: Corrections, Calibrations, and Processing Report

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) User Facility operates three fixed-site observatories: Eastern North Atlantic (ENA), North Slope of Alaska (NSA), and Southern Great Plains (SGP). Each fixed site has a wide variety of atmospheric instrumentation that has been collecting data for at least 10 years (NSA and SGP over 25 years). Each site is unique because it represents a different climate state. The environment at ENA is characterized by marine stratocumulus clouds and one of the key scientific areas of focus is the interaction of these clouds with aerosols. At NSA the focus is on arctic climate and cloud and radiative processes in a high-latitude environment. SGP represents a mid-latitude, mid-continent climate that experiences environmental cycles on diurnal and seasonal time scales. The ARM observatories are all meant to improve understanding of atmospheric processes that can then be better incorporated into weather and climate models. Another common thread between the fixed sites is the focus on cloud processes. Each site is equipped with at least one radar that provides continuous remote-sensing observations of clouds and precipitation. This report details the analysis of a1-level radar data at the fixed sites and the process for generating b1-level data. While b1-level data have been produced for ARM campaigns at the mobile facilities, this is the first analysis led by ARM radar mentors to correct data at the fixed sites. In particular, we focus on calibrations and corrections of the Ka-band ARM Zenith Radars (KAZRs) at ENA, NSA, and SGP. Ongoing and future work will involve corrections applied to other fixed-site radars.

Parametrizing the detector response with neural networks

In high energy physics, characterizing the response of a detector to radiation is one of the most important and fundamental experimental tasks. In many cases, this task is accomplished by parameterizing summary statistics of the full detector response probability density. The parameterized detector response can then be used for calibration as well as for directly improving physics analysis sensitivity. This paper reports on how to parameterize summary statistics of the detector response using neural networks. Specifically, neural networks are powerful tools for incorporating multidimensional data and the loss function used during training determines which summary statistic is learned. One common summary statistic that has not been combined with deep learning (as far as the authors are aware) is the mode. A neural network-based approach to mode learning is proposed and empirically demonstrated in the context of high energy jet calibrations. Altogether, the neural network-based toolkit for detector response parameterization can enhance the utility of data collected at high energy physics experiments and beyond.

2010-2012 Minneapolis - St. Paul Travel Behavior Inventory

The 2010-2012 Travel Behavior Inventory (TBI) provided Minnesota policymakers and researchers with data about travel in the Minneapolis - St. Paul region. It also updated the region's travel demand forecasting, including transit ridership for major transportation projects. The Metropolitan Council in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area conducted the survey. The TBI consists of a paper-based survey and a wearable global positioning system survey. The data collection process for these two surveys was independent, and the results are not intended to function together.
