Anomaly Attribution with Likelihood Compensation

This paper addresses the task of explaining anomalous predictions of a black-box regression model. When using a black-box model, such as one to predict building energy consumption from many sensor measurements, we often have a situation where some observed samples may significantly deviate from their prediction. It may be due to a sub-optimal black-box model, or simply because those samples are outliers. In either case, one would ideally want to compute a responsibility score indicative of the extent to which an input variable is responsible for the anomalous output. In this work, we formalize this task as a statistical inverse problem: Given model deviation from the expected value, infer the responsibility score of each of the input variables. We propose a new method called likelihood compensation (LC), which is founded on the likelihood principle and computes a correction to each input variable. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first principled framework that computes a responsibility score for real valued anomalous model deviations. We apply our approach to a real-world building energy prediction task and confirm its utility based on expert feedback.

Anomaly Detection in Accelerator Facilities Using Machine Learning

Synchrotron light sources are user facilities and usually run about 5000 hours per year to support many beamlines operations in parallel. Reliability is a key parameter to evaluate machine performance. Even many facilities have achieved >95% beam reliability, there are still many hours of unscheduled downtime and every hour lost is a waste of operation costs along with a big impact on individual scheduled user experiments. Preventive maintenance on subsystems and quick recovery from machine trips are the basic strategies to achieve high reliability, which heavily depends on experts’ dedication. Recently, SLAC, APS, and NSLS-II collaborated to develop machine-learning-based approaches aiming to solve both situations, hardware failure prediction and machine failure diagnosis to find the root sources. In this paper, we report our facility operation status, development progress, and plans.

The use of soil moisture and Standardized Evaporative Stress Ratio (SESR) anomalies for increased lead time of the development flash drought and heat waves

Drought and rapid intensification of drought (i.e., flash drought) can have significant impacts on the natural environment and the economy, particularly when coupled with a period(s) of extreme heat (Otkin et al., 2018). The development and/or intensification of drought falls squarely in the sub-seasonal to seasonal (S2S) time frame, which dictates that drought development, intensification, and propagation could be an output of a subseasonal or seasonal forecast. Current S2S forecasts have poor skill for forecasting the development of extreme drought and heat waves.

Discovery of Signatures, Anomalies, and Precursors in Synchrophasor Data with Matrix Profile and Deep Recurrent Neural Networks (Final Project Report)

The widespread deployment of phasor measurement unit (PMU) across the U.S. together with the burgeoning machine learning technology made it possible to develop data-driven PMU data analytics to improve grid security and reliability in a more insightful and effective manner. Although PMU applications have been explored for over a decade, the representative PMU usage is limited to the bulk power system monitoring mainly due to the data integrity issues associated with PMUs (typically missing, fragmented, and wrongly amplified data). To forge a breakthrough on this stalemate and embrace PMUs for power system control and protection as well, we applied various advanced machine learning and big data analysis technology to the power system event detection and classification as the first step toward the power system control and protection pertaining to grid security enhancement.

Lorentz invariance relation anomalies and intrinsic parton transverse momentum

We investigate the so-called Lorentz invariance relations from the standpoint of the proper definitions of partonic correlations functions resulting from factorization; that is in light the proper treatment of ultraviolet divergences. We show that there are corrections to the naive Lorentz invariance relations are nontrivial even in very simple renormalizable quantum field theories. We also discuss the implications for phenomenological applications.
