The results of the ATS-6/GEOS-3 and the ATS-6/NIMBUS-6 satellite-to-satellite tracking orbit determination experiments are reported. The tracking systems used in these experiments differ from the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), primarily in the use of one rather than two synchronous relay satellites. However, the simulations mentioned indicate that the insights gained from the experiments with regard to proper data reduction techniques and expected results are applicable to the TDRSS.

The author has identified the following significant results. The initial CAS estimates, which were made for each month from April through August, were considerably higher than the USDA/SRS estimates. This was attributed to: (1) the practice of considering bare ground as potential wheat and counting it as wheat; (2) overestimation of the wheat proportions in segments having only a small amount of wheat; and (3) the classification of confusion crops as wheat. At the end of the season most of the segments were reworked using improved methods based on experience gained during the season. In particular, new procedures were developed to solve the three problems listed above. These and other improvements used in the rework experiment resulted in at-harvest estimates that were much closer to the USDA/SRS estimates than those obtained during the regular season.

Statistics compiled from Nimbus-6 temperature retrievals processed during the 18 August-4 September 1975 DST-5, and the 1 February-4 March 1976 DST-6 are addressed. All statistics were compiled from samples of colocated satellite sounding and radiosonde measurements. The colocation window is 222 km in space and 6 hours in time.
In order to test the error of calculation in assumed values of the transmission function for Soviet and American radiometers sounding the atmosphere thermally from orbiting satellites, the assumptions of the transmission calculation is varied with respect to atmospheric CO2 content, transmission frequency, and atmospheric absorption. The error arising from variations of the assumptions from the standard basic model is calculated.
