SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual - Version 5.8

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Verification study of xRAGE’s multi-ion viscosity model

This report on the adequacy of the plasma viscosity model implemented in LANL’s ASC program code, xRAGE is organized as follows. Section I provides a brief introduction on the kinetic theory which underpins plasma viscosity, and Section II describes how plasma kinetic theory can be used to calculate plasma viscosity coefficients accurate within the hydrodynamic limit. Section III describes the existing model for calculating the plasma viscosity coefficient in xRAGE. Next, Section IV shows tests of the xRAGE viscosity model against established hydrodynamic theory in the case of binary and trinary plasma mixtures.

Verification of Revised and Upcoming Nuclear Data Sensitivity MCNP Features [Poster]

Nuclear data is ubiquitous across nuclear applications. Improved nuclear data means more accurate simulations. Past focus on k eff caused compensating error and areas of unvalidated nuclear data. Sensitivity can be used to optimize experiments to focus on specific areas. Sensitivity capabilities must be expanded and improved to design multivariate experiments focused on nuclear data needs.

Small Windowed PDV Slab Shot Verification

Windowed PDV probes are used as a time of arrival diagnostic where conventional PDV measurements cannot be made with accuracy i.e., measurements where the surface measured is bare HE or the surface measured does not provide quality optical return for PDV directly. Often hydro experiments require that these diagnostics be minimally invasive, so their installation does not negatively impact the device performance or the overall experiments goals. In this report we build 3 mm diameter windowed probes and show that they give an error that is still within the error of piezo pins.

Tracer Gas Model Development and Verification in PFLOTRAN

Tracer gases, whether they are chemical or isotopic in nature, are useful tools in examining the flow and transport of gaseous or volatile species in the underground. One application is using detection of short-lived argon and xenon radionuclides to monitor for underground nuclear explosions. However, even chemically inert species, such as the noble gases, have bene observed to exhibit non-conservative behavior when flowing through porous media containing certain materials, such as zeolites, due to gas adsorption processes. This report details the model developed, implemented, and tested in the open source and massively parallel subsurface flow and transport simulator PFLOTRAN for future use in modeling the transport of adsorbing tracer gases.

Verification of a Reduced-Order Extension Spring Model

Adopting reduced order models (ROMs) of springs lowers the computational cost of stronglink simulations. However, ROMs introduce currently unquantified error to such analyses. This study addresses that lack of data by comparing a hexahedral mesh to a commonly used ROM beam mesh. Two types of analyses were performed, a quasi-static displacement-controlled pull and a haversine shock, examining basic spring properties as well as dynamics and stress/strain data. Both tests showed good similarities between the hexahedral and beam meshes, especially when comparing reaction force and stress trends and maximums. Equivalent plastic strain results were not quite as favorable, indicating that the beam model may be less likely to correctly predict spring failure. Despite reducing computation times by over 48 hours in all shock cases, appropriate use of the ROM should carefully balance this advantage with its reduction in accuracy, especially when examining spring failure and outputting variables such as equivalent plastic strain.

MCNP6.3 Unstructured Mesh Verification: GodivR and CANDU Models

A geometric cell of the Monte Carlo N-Particle (MCNP)1 transport code is traditionally created by using Boolean operators on defined surfaces. This constructive solid geometry (CSG) capability has been available in the MCNP code since its beginning. However, a CSG model approach is limited when it comes to constructing a representative geometry for a complex model in its ability to capture a correct model representation. Starting with the version 6.0, the MCNP code has the ability of embedding an unstructured mesh (UM) model into a CSG cell to create a hybrid geometry [1]. The MCNP UM feature provides the flexibility of defining very complex geometries because computer aided design (CAD) and mesh generation software packages can be utilized to construct UM models for MCNP simulations.

M-Star® Software Test and Verification for Impeller Mixing in a Tank

Before a sample of the Slurry Mix Evaporator (SME) can be taken, the SME product sampling procedure requires that the agitator power be stable between 20 and 30 kW for at least one hour. The SME transfer to Melter Feed Tank (MFT) procedure also requires the SME agitator power be stabilized between 20 and 30 kW prior to transfer. These requirements are specified to ensure samples are homogeneous, as discussed in the Waste Form Qualification Report. During SME Batch 804, the agitator power dropped to 19 kW and struggled to achieve and maintain 20 kW. It was later discovered that the cause of the power drop was due to one of the bottom blades of the agitator breaking off. Both the sample and the transfer occurred without the power stabilizing between 20 and 30 kW. Therefore, the quality of SME Batch 804 is indeterminate, and homogeneity was questionable.

Verification of Thermodynamic Conservation in the Exero: H2GEN Reactor

The key objective of this project is to conduct an independent analysis of UG’s eXERO technology. Additionally, ORNL will perform 3D multiphysics modelling of the cell to understand and optimize the key operating parameters in generating 99.9+% pure hydrogen. The first objective of this work is to conduct first and second law analysis of the eXERO technology and independently verify the measured performance data, provided by UG.
