As part of the intensive field campaign (IFC) for the Boreal forest ecosystem-atmosphere research (BOREAS) project in August 1993, the NASA/JPL AIRSAR covered an area of about 100 km x 100 km near Prince Albert National PArk in Saskathewan, Canada.
The Earth-orbiting radar missions are planned for the near future by NASA - Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and LightSar.
Satellite radar interferometry is a powerful technique to measure the surface velocity and topography of glacier ice. On ice shelves, a quadruple difference technique separates tidal motion from the steady creep flow deformation of ice.
Characterization of boreal forests in ecosystem models requires temporal and spatial distributions of water content and biomass over local and regional scales. In this paper, we report on the use of a semi-empirical algorithm for deriving these parameters from polarimetric synthetic aperture radar measurements.

Repeat-pass, interferometric, radar observations of tropical rain-forests colected by the Shuttle Imaging Radar SIR-C in Rondonia, Brazil reveal C-band (5.6-cm) radar signals completely decorelate over forest, whereas L-band (24-cm) signals remain strongly coherent over the intire landscape. At L-band, the difference in elevation between forest and clearings is within the 8-m height noise of the data. Atmospheric delays are large, however, forming kilometer-sized anomalies with a with a 1.2-cm rms one way. Radar interferometric studies of humid tropics miust be conducted at long radar wavelengths, with kilometric baselines or with two antennas operating simultaneously.
Deployable and inflatable structures are successfully used in a wide variety of earth-bound applications. Their use in space, however, requires not only assurance that the structure will survive a launch to space, but also certainly that the desired deployed configuration and that the processes of deployment, inflation and rigidization in space will be successful and without posing a threat to the hosting satellite or vessel.
