Describing the Influence of Ball-milling on the Amorphization of Flubendazole Using the PDF and RMC Methods with X-ray Powder Diffraction Data

Flubendazole (FBZ) is a poorly water-soluble drug, and different methodologies have been proposed to improve its oral bioavailability. Obtaining the amorphous drug phase is an alternative to improve its water solubility. Several techniques for drug amorphization, such as spray drying, lyophilization, melt quenching, solvent-evaporation, and ball milling, can yield various types of structural disorder and possibly render variations in physicochemical properties. Herein, we focus on evaluating the influence of the ball-milling process on the amorphization of FBZ. The characterization of the average global and local structures before, during, and after the milling process is described by sequential Rietveld refinements, pair distribution function analysis, and the Reverse Monte Carlo method. In conclusion, we show that preserving the local structure (nearest molecules) can be responsible for avoiding the fast structure recrystallization commonly observed when using the solvent-evaporation process for the studied drug.

A Fast Algorithm for Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Imaging and 4D-STEM Diffraction Simulations

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) is an extremely versatile method for studying materials on the atomic scale. Many STEM experiments are supported or validated with electron scattering simulations. However, using the conventional multislice algorithm to perform these simulations can require extremely large calculation times, particularly for experiments with millions of probe positions as each probe position must be simulated independently. Recently, the plane-wave reciprocal-space interpolated scattering matrix (PRISM) algorithm was developed to reduce calculation times for large STEM simulations. Here, we introduce a new method for STEM simulation: partitioning of the STEM probe into “beamlets,” given by a natural neighbor interpolation of the parent beams. This idea is compatible with PRISM simulations and can lead to even larger improvements in simulation time, as well requiring significantly less computer random access memory (RAM). We have performed various simulations to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of partitioned PRISM STEM simulations. We find that this new algorithm is particularly useful for 4D-STEM simulations of large fields of view. We also provide a reference implementation of the multislice, PRISM, and partitioned PRISM algorithms.

Insights into the Rich Polymorphism of the Na + Ion Conductor Na 3 PS 4 from the Perspective of Variable-Temperature Diffraction and Spectroscopy

Solid electrolytes are crucial for next-generation solid-state batteries, and Na 3 PS 4 is one of the most promising Na + conductors for such applications, despite outstanding questions regarding its structural polymorphs. In this contribution, we present a detailed investigation of the evolution in structure and dynamics of Na 3 PS 4 over a wide temperature range 30 < T T < 500 °C, which we attribute to dynamic local tetragonal distortions. The first-order phase transition to the mesophasic high-temperature polymorph (γ, Fddd ) is associated with a sharp volume increase and the onset of liquid-like dynamics for sodium-cations (translational) and thiophosphate-polyanions (rotational) evident by inelastic neutron and Raman spectroscopies, as well as pair-distribution function and molecular dynamics analyses. Overall, these results shed light on the rich polymorphism of Na 3 PS 4 and are relevant for a range host of high-performance materials deriving from the Na 3 PS 4 structural archetype.
