On the Corrosion Response of Novel Heat Exchangers Manufactured by Casting of Al-Ce-Mg Alloy

Developing low-cost and durable heat exchangers is critical for next-generation heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. The emerging requirement to minimize the total refrigerant charge inventory while ensuring a uniform distribution of refrigerant has led to the deployment of advanced manufacturing strategies. At the same time, corrosion is a longstanding issue for metal components, especially those used in heat exchanger (HX) applications. In this study, Al-Ce-Mg alloy-based HXs have been investigated. The corrosion resistance of HXs prototype manufactured by the casting process has been examined and the potential of a new manufacturing approach has been explored to meet the requirements of emerging needs.

Fabrication and characterization of a full-size ultra-precise lamellar grating for the Cosmic beamline at ALS-U

We have developed a new process for the production of ultra-precise variable line spacing (VLS) lamellar diffraction gratings through nanofabrication. The process enables the fabrication of full-size X-ray gratings with sub-nanometre accuracy in groove depth, an optimal land-to-groove ratio, and uniform groove depth across the entire grating area. We also established a method for evaluating VLS groove density variation using stitched Fizeau interferometry. The measurements confirmed the exceptionally high accuracy of the VLS groove density in the fabricated gratings, which is well within the specification tolerances while the residual groove density errors are vanishingly small. The gold-coated grating demonstrated near-theoretical diffraction efficiency across the energy range of 100–1200 eV.

Materials Data on Al(Ni10B7)2 by Materials Project

Ni20AlB14 crystallizes in the cubic Fm-3m space group. The structure is three-dimensional and consists of four aluminum molecules and one Ni10B7 framework. In the Ni10B7 framework, there are two inequivalent Ni+1.95+ sites. In the first Ni+1.95+ site, Ni+1.95+ is bonded in a 6-coordinate geometry to six B3- atoms. There are three shorter (2.13 Å) and three longer (2.26 Å) Ni–B bond lengths. In the second Ni+1.95+ site, Ni+1.95+ is bonded in a square co-planar geometry to four B3- atoms. There are two shorter (2.05 Å) and two longer (2.13 Å) Ni–B bond lengths. There are two inequivalent B3- sites. In the first B3- site, B3- is bonded in a 9-coordinate geometry to six Ni+1.95+ and three equivalent B3- atoms. All B–B bond lengths are 1.81 Å. In the second B3- site, B3- is bonded in a 8-coordinate geometry to eight Ni+1.95+ atoms.
