Carbon-14 ages of Antarctic meteorites with accelerator and small-volume counting techniques

C-14 measurements were made on six Yamato and Victoria Land meteorites using tandem accelerator mass spectroscopy. The studies brought to 27 the number of Antarctic meteorites that have been examined for terrestrial aging. Details of the spectroscopic method are provided, along with the results in combinations with the data from the other 21 meteorites. It is found that the Yamato meteorites are younger than those found at Allan Hills, implying that two mechanisms may exist for the abundant Antarctic meteorites: exposure where falling due to a paucity of ice, and transport and exposure by sublimating ice.

Visceral predictors of cardiovascular deconditioning in late middle-aged men

A number of visceral and behavioral factors connected with cardiovascular deconditioning were investigated, in order to identify a method for predicting the degree of orthostatic intolerance to spaceflight in several late-middle-aged men (55-65 years). Preliminary measurements were made of: mean arterial blood pressure plasma cortisol levels; and norepinephrine levels. Measurements of core temperature; plasma epinephrine level and subjective arousal from sleep were also obtained. Pairwise correlations were found for each of the variables and the time-to-blackout due centrifugal acceleration of up to +3 Gz. It is shown that the men with relatively low resting blood pressure were at greater risk of developing the clinical signs of cardiovascular deconditioning than were the men with higher basal blood pressure. Some applications of the experimental results to the development of selection criteria for Shuttle crews are discussed.

Einstein X-ray survey of the Pleiades - The dependence of X-ray emission on stellar age

The data obtained with two pointed observations of 1 deg by 1 deg fields of the Pleiades region have been analyzed, and the results are presented. The maximum-likelihood X-ray luminosity functions for the Pleiades G and K stars in the cluster are derived, and it is shown that, for the G stars, the Pleiades X-ray luminosity function is significantly brighter than the corresponding function for Hyades G dwarf stars. This finding indicates a dependence of X-ray luminosity on stellar age, which is confirmed by comparison of the same data with median X-ray luminosities of pre-main sequence and local disk population dwarf G stars. It is suggested that the significantly larger number of bright X-ray sources associated with G stars than with K stars, the lack of detection of M stars, and the relatively rapid rotation of the Pleiades K stars can be explained in terms of the onset of internal differential rotation near the convective envelope-radidative core interface after the spin-up phase during evolution to the main sequence.

Age constraints on the evolution of the Quetico belt, Superior Province, Ontario

Much attention has been focused on the nature of Archean tectonic processes and the extent to which they were different from modern rigid-plate tectonics. The Archean Superior Province has linear metavolcanic and metasediment-dominated subprovinces of similar scale to cenozoic island arc-trench systems of the western Pacific, suggesting an origin by accreting arcs. Models of the evolution of metavolcanic belts in parts of the Superior Province suggest an arc setting but the tectonic environment and evolution of the intervening metasedimentary belts are poorly understood. In addition to explaining the setting giving rise to a linear sedimentary basin, models must account for subsequent shortening and high-temperature, low-pressure metamorphism. Correlation of rock units and events in adjacent metavolcanic and metasedimentary belts is a first step toward understanding large-scale crustal interactions. To this end, zircon geochronology has been applied to metavolcanic belts of the western Superior Province; new age data for the Quetico metasedimentary belt is reported, permitting correlation with the adjacent Wabigoon and Wawa metavolcanic subprovinces.

A mechanical property and stress corrosion evaluation of VIM-ESR-VAR work strengthened and direct double aged Inconel 718 bar material

Presented are the mechanical properties and the stress corrosion resistance of triple melted vacuum induction melted (VIM), electro-slag remelted (ESR), and vacuum arc remelted (VAR), solution treated, work strengthened and direct double aged Inconel 718 alloy bars 4.00 in. (10.16) and 5.75 in. (14.60 cm) diameter. Tensile, charpy v-notched impact, and compact tension specimens were tested at ambient temperature in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. Longitudinal tensile and yield strengths in excess of 220 ksi (1516.85 MPa) and 200 ksi (1378.00 MPa) respectively, were realized at ambient temperature. Additional charpy impact and compact tension tests were performed at -100 F (-73 C). Longitudinal charpy impact strength equalled or exceeded 12.0 ft-lbs (16.3 Joules) at ambient and at -100 F(-73 C) while longitudinal compact (LC) tension fracture toughness strength remained above 79 ksi (86.80 MPa) at ambient and at -100 F(-73 C) temperatures. No failures occurred in the longitudinal or transverse tensile specimens stressed to 75 and 100 percent of their respective yield strengths and exposed to a salt fog environment for 180 days. Tensile tests performed after the stress corrosion test indicated no mechanical property degradation.

The effect of high energy (HZE) particle radiation (Ar-40) on aging parameters of mouse hippocampus and retina

Eight month old C57BL6 mice were exposed (head only) to 0.5 rad or 50 rads of Argon particles at the Lawrence Berkeley Radiation Facility, CA. Neuromotor performance was assessed monthly for six months beginning twelve weeks post-irradiation using a 'string test'. The decline in motor performance was dose-related and none of the animals was able to complete the task after four months of testing. Morphological changes were monitored six and twelve months post-irradiation by light and electron microscopy. The synaptic density in the CA-1 area of the hippocampus decreased six and twelve months after irradiation. The decrease after twelve months was less than after six months. The width of the outer nuclear layer (ONL) of the retina increased with increasing dose. The number of blood vessels between the ONL and the ganglion layer decreased twelve months after irradiation and this area did not show significant accumulation of age pigment.

Bedrest-induced peak VO2 reduction associated with age, gender, and aerobic capacity

A study measuring the peak oxygen uptake (V02), heart rate (HR), and exercise tolerance time of 15 men of 55 + or - 2 yr and 17 women of 55 + or - 1 yr after 10 days of continuous bed rest (BR) is presented. The experimental conditions and procedures are described. Following BR a decrease in peak VO2 of 8.4 percent in men and 6.8 percent in women, a reduction in exercise tolerance time by 8.1 percent in men and 7.3 percent in women, and an increse in HR of 4.4 percent and 1.3 percent for men and women, respectively, are observed. These data are compared with data from Convertino et al. (1977) for men 21 + or - 1 yr and women 28 + or - 2yr. It is concluded that BR-induced aerobic deconditioning is independent of age and sex, since the relative decrease in peak V02 in the older and younger subjects and men and women are similar.

Hydrogen effects on the age hardening behavior of 2024 aluminum

It has been found that the fatigue crack growth rate in aluminum alloys increases significantly in the presence of moisture. This phenomenon along with a moisture effect observed in another context has been attributed to 'embrittlement' of the aluminum by absorbed hydrogen generated by the reaction of moisture with freshly exposed aluminum. A description is given of a number of age hardening experiments involving 2024 aluminum. These experiments show that a mechanism related to the segregation of absorbed hydrogen to the coherent theta-double-prime interfaces may account for the observed reduction in fatigue life. It is pointed out that this segregation promotes a loss of coherency in the hydrogen rich region at a fatigue crack tip. Subsequently, the loss of coherency causes local softening and reduces fatigue life.

Determination of stellar ages from asteroseismology

This Letter shows that measurements of the stellar analog of the solar five minute oscillations can permit the determination of the radius and age of isolated stars. The key frequencies of oscillation correspond to pairs of modes differing by two in the degree of the spherical harmonic describing the angular dependence of the motion and by one in the overtone order of the modes. The frequency pairs are very nearly degenerate, and adequate frequency resolution will require a nearly unbroken time sequence extending over 15 days.

A discussion of isotopic systematics and mineral zoning in the shergottites - Evidence for a 180 m.y. igneous crystallization age

The chronologies of the Shergotty, Zagami, ALHA 77005, and EETA 79001 meteorites were reexamined on the basis of shergottites' petrography and mineral chemistry data. Among the various isochrons, the concordant Rb-Sr (about 180 Myr) and U-Th-Pb (about 190 Myr) internal isochrons are interpreted as representing the time of igneous crystallization, while the Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, and Pb-Pb whole-rock isochrons are interpreted as mixing lines, and are reasonably attributed to igneous processes such as wall-rock assimilation and magma mixing. If the approximated age of less than 200 Myr is correct, the shergottites represent the youngest known extraterrestrial basalts. This conclusion supports the hypothesis that the SNC meteorites are samples of Mars.

Mechanistic studies of photothermal aging

Cracks were observed forming in Tedlar back cover films on PV modules mounted outdoors in the natural environment. The cracks appear to approximate reasonable straight lines and, in general, are parallel to each other. It is implied that the directionality of these cracks may be in some way related to film orientation. Preliminary results from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) studies investigating the causes of these cracks indicate that Tedlar does not become brittle on aging. It was speculated that perhaps compounding ingredients employed in EVA may migrate into the Tedlar film, thus causing a potential for chemical effects.

Geometry and relative age of large patterned fractures in southern Acidalia Planitia, Mars

Extraordinary patterned fractures occur in Elysium, Utopia, and Acidalia Planitiae of Mars. Theories as to their origin range from permafrost patterning to tectonic fracturing. Recent studies indicate the patterned fractures may be a surface reflection of rough, buried terrane in which fracturing occurs as a result of differential compaction. The patterned terrane in the southern portion of the Acidalia region (MC4-SE, MC4-SC) is being studied to determine its age relative to other terranes and events, and to constrain models for the origin of the fractures. Fracturing in this area occurs between 5 and 25 degrees west longitude and 37 and 50 degrees north latitude. Many fracture patterns are roughly polygonal, with polygons ranging in size from approximately 11 to 32 km in diameter. Fracture traces range from the limit of resolution (10's of meters) to 35 km in length.

I-Pu-Xe dating and the relative ages of the earth and moon

The ages of the earth and moon as determined by various chronometric systems are discussed with primary emphasis placed on the development of an I-Pu-Xe chronometer. Data on excess fission xenon are reviewed with attention given to the strengths and weaknesses of the assumptions required for lunar I-Pu-Xe chronometry. Using I-Pu-Xe dating, it is estimated that the retention of excess fission xenon in lunar samples began no more than 63 + or - 42 m.y. after the time of primitive meteorite formation.

Quasars as indicators of galactic ages

Theoretical models of QSO evolution and their use in estimating the ages of galaxies containing QSOs are discussed, with a focus on the problems involved in extrapolating from statistical data on relatively nearby objects (z less than 2) to characterize distant objects. Graphs and histograms are provided, and it is concluded that the sharp decrease in the number of QSOs between z = 2 and z =3, if not the result of obscuration or some other selection effect, makes it probable that the galaxy-formation processes which led to the formation of the QSOs occurred at z greater than 5. In that case, the QSOs would be one of the only observational probes of these processes. Mechanisms which could account for the time delay between galaxy formation and QSO turn-on are considered.

The age and source of ocean swell observed in Hurricane Josephine

A simple kinematic model is applied to SIR-B observations in the far field of Hurricane Josephine in order to estimate the swell origin in space and time. The SIR data was obtained on October 12, 1984, and the geometry of the hurricane swell kinematic model is described. Estimates of the wavenumber and wave age and generation regions of the system are graphically presented and examined. The data reveal that the waves of Hurricane Josephine were generated 0-9 hours before the SIR-B overpass.

A micrometeorite erosion model and the age of Saturn's rings

An erosional model of Saturn's rings is proposed based on theoretical studies of the high charge-to-mass ratio particles in Saturn's ring plane, and assuming that the B and C rings were initially formed as one ring with the optical thickness of the present B ring. The erosion rate is calculated using data from observed micrometeorite fluxes, and a ring age of 4.4-76 Myr is determined which is inconsistent with the 4.5-Gyr ring lifetime required by the cosmogonic ring hypothesis. The sharpness of the transition between the B and C rings suggests that the principal mass loss is through particles moving at a few m/sec with respect to the parent bodies from which they were eroded.

Precipitation in a rapidly solidified and aged Ni-Al-Mo alloy

The early stages of decomposition of a highly supersaturated nickel-base alloy have been studied using TEM, SEM, and X-ray diffraction. The material was produced as a metastable solid solution by chill-block melt-spinning. On aging, the material exhibited a number of decomposition products appearing in series or concomitantly. Some of the decomposition products of this alloy, Ni4Mo, Ni3Mo, and Ni2Mo, are related to those found in Ni-Mo binary alloys. Alpha-Mo formed during solidification was distinguished from that formed by precipitation in the solid state by orientation relationships.
