Gyrokinetic Particle Simulations of Core Turbulence in Fusion Plasmas

In this project, we have further developed GTC gyrokinetic particle simulations to study plasma confinement properties in the stellarators and tokamaks with 3D magnetic fields, where both neoclassical and turbulent transport are self-consistently treated on an equal footing.

Core Model Proposal 397: Update to Hector V3.2.0

Hector V3.2.0 is the version documented in Dorheim et. al (accepted in GMD), the changes between the previous version coupled with GCAM were in response to the reviewer feedback. We corrected aerosol forcing coefficients based on Zelinka et al. (2023), enabled the permafrost module to be on by default, and recalibrated the model. These changes mean that we had to update the hector-gcam.ini file, it also causes some changes in Hector output behavior (described below) which may have implications on GCAM runs. Ultimately Hector is cooler by about 0.15 degrees, although this is scenario dependent.

Independent Analyses of Antares R1 Core Design

This report summarizes the reactor analysis work performed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for Antares Nuclear Incorporated's R1 Mark-1 heat pipe reactor design. The work was performed under a collaboration through the Department of Energy GAIN Nuclear Energy Voucher program. The purpose of this work is to perform an independent reactor analysis of the Antares reactor design and, where possible, compare ORNL's results with the results obtained by Antares. The overarching goal is to provide Antares with an independent review and calculation of their design, thereby contributing to Antares' mission to further their reactor design concept. A report with all ORNL technical results and proprietary details was provided to Antares Nuclear Incorporated separately; the present report provides a summary of the work completed, and all proprietary information is omitted. The independent reactor analysis was performed using both the SCALE code system for neutronics analysis and Flownex for thermal hydraulics analysis.

Control-Agnostic Beam Instrumentation with Redis at the Core

Redis isn’t a database — it’s our protocol. Fermilab’s RedisAdapter provides a high-performance, control-system-agnostic bridge between digitized beam data and downstream consumers such as ACNET and EPICS. It forms the foundation of three new software components deployed across MicroTCA-based digitizers: GMMDM, a runtime for memory-mapped data movement from Zynq-based platforms; GRAFE, a front end for Redis-to-ACNET presentation; and GREFE, an EPICS IOC front end. Together, these tools enable modular, standardized instrumentation pipelines. Precision timing is handled via White Rabbit PPS distribution, allowing nanosecond-scale synchronization across crates. This architecture, originally prototyped in Booster BPM systems, is now deployed on modern hardware and designed to meet the performance, modularity, and scalability requirements of the PIP-II era.

Neutronic Effects of Missing Elements in the Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR)

Neutronic effects of ACRR operating with a missing element are analyzed using MCNP. Results are focused on assessing the peaking factors associated with a single missing element. Intra-element power gradients are also assessed. A missing tri-element is evaluated as unique case. Auxiliary studies are provided that analyze the effects of cavity buckets, rod positions, and reflector elements. Neutronic effects of a nearby FREC-II (coupled and decoupled/tilted) are presented for select scenarios.

Core Model Proposal #338: Regional Forest Markets and Crop Trade Updates

The main purpose of this proposal is to update the forest (i.e., Roundwood) trade modeling in GCAM from HOV (Heckscher-Ohlin Vanek) based fully integrated world market to segmented regional markets using the logit-based Armington approach. We also improve agricultural trade-related data, update trade (Armington) parameters based on literature information, and allow elastic forest demand responses. This CMP is an extension of previous GCAM agricultural trade CMPs (289 & 312).

Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) Core Project Final Report: Fiscal Years 2022-2024

The Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is a world-leading solar calibration and measurement facility and maintains and disseminates the World Radiation Reference (essentially the W/m2) for the United States that is essential for traceable and accurate measurements of solar radiation at all solar generation facilities. SRRL operates two calibration facilities that meet International Standards Organization-17025 (ISO-17025) standards and provide unique high-quality calibrations to NREL and other U.S. Department of Energy laboratories. The Baseline Measurement System (BMS) at SRRL provides a high-quality record of solar irradiance and surface meteorological conditions. SRRL capabilities are used to develop (1) improved methods for the calibration of solar radiometers; (2) new standards through the ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the American Standards for Testing of Materials (ASTM) International; (c) solar radiation and meteorological models; and (d) advanced instrumentation and methods for operating solar measurement stations. The SRRL datasets are also critical for the validation of new models and datasets, such as the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). The research and development of solar radiation measurement systems and resource modeling techniques are essential for advancing the scientific basis for producing reliable resource data. Specifically, the spatial, temporal, and spectral (wavelength dependency) characteristics of the solar resource are required in several different time frames for various project phases.
