All‐Polymer Bulk‐Heterojunction Organic Electrochemical Transistors with Balanced Ionic and Electronic Transport

Abstract The rapid development of organic electrochemical transistor (OECTs)‐based circuits brings new opportunities for next‐generation integrated bioelectronics. The all‐polymer bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) offers an attractive, inexpensive alternative to achieve efficient ambipolar OECTs, and building blocks of logic circuits constructed from them, but have not been investigated to date. Here, the first all‐polymer BHJ‐based OECTs are reported, consisting of a blend of new p‐type ladder conjugated polymer and a state‐of‐the‐art n‐type ladder polymer. The whole ladder‐type polymer BHJ also proves that side chains are not necessary for good ion transport. Instead, the polymer nanostructures play a critical role in the ion penetration and transportation and thus in the device performance. It also provides a facile strategy and simplifies the fabrication process, forgoing the need to pattern multiple active layers. In addition, the development of complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)‐like OECTs allows the pursuit of advanced functional logic circuitry, including inverters and NAND gates, as well as for amplifying electrophysiology signals. This work opens a new approach to the design of new materials for OECTs and will contribute to the development of organic heterojunctions for ambipolar OECTs toward high‐performing logic circuits.

Deciphering the Dynamic Balance Between Solvation Strength and Polysulfides Reaction Heterogeneity in Practical Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Achieving stable interfacial chemistry in lithium–sulfur batteries under practical conditions remains a key barrier to commercialization. Here, we demonstrate that interfacial dynamics can be effectively regulated by coupling solvation-power control with intrinsic heterogeneity of sulfur redox chemistry through the introduction of a weakly solvating fluorinated cosolvent, LIB 1200ET (1200ET). Compared with conventional fluorinated ethers, 1200ET efficiently shifts Li + solvation environment toward a more non-coordinated configuration at low volume fractions, enabling substantial solvation modulation without significantly impairing sulfur redox kinetics. This solvation transition weakens Li + –solvent interactions while strengthening Li + –anion and Li + –lithium polysulfide (LPS) coordination, suppressing LPS solubility and promoting reconstruction of solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI). Regulated LPS chemistry, together with 1200ET, leads to formation of a S 4+ -rich, LiF-reinforced SEI with enhanced ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness. Spatially resolved sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy on pouch cells reveals pronounced current-density-dependent chemical heterogeneity, distinguishing kinetically dominated and solvation-controlled regions. Under practical conditions (3.7 mg cm −2 sulfur loading, E/S = 6 µL mg −1 ), a single-layer pouch cell delivers 527 mAh g −1 over 200 cycles at C/3, while an Ah-level multilayer pouch cell achieves an energy density of 358 Wh kg −1 . These results establish non-coordinating cosolvent-driven solvation engineering as a scalable strategy for practical Li–S batteries.

Balancing Doses of EL222 and Light Improves Optogenetic Induction of Protein Production in Komagataella phaffii

ABSTRACT Komagataella phaffii, also known asPichia pastoris, is a powerful host for recombinant protein production, in part due to its exceptionally strong and tightly controlled P AOX1 promoter. MostK. phaffiibioprocesses for recombinant protein production rely on P AOX1 to achieve dynamic control in two‐phase processes. Cells are first grown under conditions that repress P AOX1 (growth phase), followed by methanol‐induced recombinant protein expression (production phase). In this study, we propose a methanol‐free approach for dynamic metabolic control inK. phaffiiusing optogenetics, which can help enhance input tunability and flexibility in process optimization and control. The light‐responsive transcription factor EL222 fromErythrobacter litoralisis used to regulate protein production from the P C120 promoter inK. phaffiiwith blue light. We used two system designs to explore the advantages and disadvantages of coupling or decoupling EL222 integration with that of the gene of interest. We investigate the relationship between EL222 gene copy number and light dosage to improve production efficiency for intracellular and secreted proteins. Experiments in lab‐scale bioreactors demonstrate the feasibility of the outlined optogenetic systems as potential alternatives to conventional methanol‐inducible bioprocesses usingK. phaffii.

An Anthradithiophene Donor Polymer for Organic Solar Cells with a Good Balance between Efficiency and Synthetic Accessibility

Over the past few years, the organic photovoltaics technology (OPV) has reached remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), mostly thanks to the advent of nonfullerene acceptors as well as to a high level of materials engineering. Yet, the complex materials syntheses behind these results ultimately limit technological readiness. The quest for scalable organic compounds offering high PCE and reasonably low synthetic complexity is a must to close the gap between laboratory R&D and commercial products. The synthesis and full characterization of a new conjugated polymer called PATTD is reported herein, based on a novel anthradithiophene as an electron–rich building block coupled with a commercially available dithienylbenzodithiophenedione as an electron–withdrawing comonomer. Its photovoltaic properties are studied in blends with IT–4F and IDIC as acceptors. PATTD:IT–4F–based photovoltaic devices exhibit a PCE approaching 10% and over 2300 h shelf–life stability. Finally, the PATTD scalability factor (SF), together with the PATTD–based photovoltaic performances, lead to a PCE/SF value equal to 0.297, placing such devices into the innermost circle of OPV materials, achieving one of the best compromises between efficiency and synthetic complexity and at the same time offering promising industrial perspectives.

Integrating Aquatic Metabolism and Net Ecosystem CO2 Balance in Short- and Long-Hydroperiod Subtropical Freshwater Wetlands

Abstract How aquatic primary productivity influences the carbon (C) sequestering capacity of wetlands is uncertain. We evaluated the magnitude and variability in aquatic C dynamics and compared them to net ecosystem CO 2 exchange (NEE) and ecosystem respiration ( R eco ) rates within calcareous freshwater wetlands in Everglades National Park. We continuously recorded 30-min measurements of dissolved oxygen (DO), water level, water temperature ( T water ), and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). These measurements were coupled with ecosystem CO 2 fluxes over 5 years (2012–2016) in a long-hydroperiod peat-rich, freshwater marsh and a short-hydroperiod, freshwater marl prairie. Daily net aquatic primary productivity (NAPP) rates indicated both wetlands were generally net heterotrophic. Gross aquatic primary productivity (GAPP) ranged from 0 to − 6.3 g C m −2 day −1 and aquatic respiration ( R Aq ) from 0 to 6.13 g C m −2 day −1 . Nonlinear interactions between water level, T water , and GAPP and R Aq resulted in high variability in NAPP that contributed to NEE. Net aquatic primary productivity accounted for 4–5% of the deviance explained in NEE rates. With respect to the flux magnitude, daily NAPP was a greater proportion of daily NEE at the long-hydroperiod site (mean = 95%) compared to the short-hydroperiod site (mean = 64%). Although we have confirmed the significant contribution of NAPP to NEE in both long- and short-hydroperiod freshwater wetlands, the decoupling of the aquatic and ecosystem fluxes could largely depend on emergent vegetation, the carbonate cycle, and the lateral C flux.
