Using EPSAT to analyze high power systems in the space environment

The authors review the Environment Power System Analysis Tool (EPSAT) design and demonstrate its capabilities by using it to address some questions that arose in designing the SPEAR III experiment. It is shown that that the rocket body cannot be driven to large positive voltages under the constraints of this experiment. Hence, attempts to measure the effects of a highly positive rocket body in the plasma environment should not be made in this experiment. It is determined that a hollow cathode will need to draw only about 50 mA to ground the rocket body. It is shown that a relatively small amount of gas needs to be released to induce a bulk breakdown near the rocket body, and this gas release should not discharge the sphere. Therefore, the experiment provides an excellent opportunity to study the neutralization of a differential charge.

Analyzing Stresses In Orthotropic Materials

Boundary Force Method for Orthotropic Materials (BOFFO) computer program performs stress analyses of two-dimensional, linearly elastic, orthotropic or composite bodies with or without cracks, by use of boundary-force method. Easy to use because only boundaries of region of interest modeled mathematically by use of built-in mesh generator. Stresses computed at any specified point in body. Solutions involving stress-intensity factors and strain-energy-release rates computed for both mode-l and mixed-mode fracture problems. Written in FORTRAN V.

Thermal Radiation Analyzer System (TRASYS)

Working alone or with SINDA '85/FLUINT, TRASYS solves radiation components of thermal analysis problems. Calculates both internode radiation exchange and incident and absorbed heat rate due to sunlight. Used in satellite design, program handles situations where one surface wholly or partially shades another from direct sunlight.

Analyzing Transonic Flow Over A Wing And Fuselage

TAWFIVE computer program calculates transonic flow over transport-type wing and fuselage. Combines multigrid acceleration technique in iterative solution of potential equation with use of integral-form boundary-layer equations to provide software tool computationally efficient, yet accurate enough for use in design. Simplifies solution process by breaking problem into loosely coupled set of modified equations. Inviscid-flow method, using standard inviscid-flow equations, valid in "outer" region away from wing, whereas boundary-layer equations valid in thin region near solid surface of wing. Written in FORTRAN 77.

Software For Analyzing Performances Of Wind Tunnels

Subsonic Wind Tunnel Performance Analysis computer program developed as aid in design and analysis of subsonic wind tunnels. Brings together and refines previously scattered and oversimplified techniques used for design of, and prediction of losses in, components of subsonic wind tunnels. Implements system of equations for determining total pressure losses and provides general guidelines for design of diffusers, contractions, corners, and inlets and exits of nonreturn tunnels. Written in FORTRAN and BASIC.

Analyzing Impacts Of Meteoroids And Debris On Spacecraft

BUMPERII is modular computer program implementing numerical solution technique to calculate probability of no penetration (PNP) of spacecraft by orbiting artificial debris or impacts of meteoroids. Equation used to calculate PNP based on Poisson-distribution model applicable to similar analysis of smaller craft, but reflects more rigorous mathematical modeling of size, shape, orientation, and other characteristics of spacecraft that affect impacts, and necessary for PNP analysis of such larger structures as components of space station. Written in FORTRAN 77.

Life-Support-System Analyzer

Paper describes software system, called Generic Modular Flow Schematic (GMFS), developed for use in synthesis, mathematical modeling, and analysis of life-support systems aboard spacecraft, ranging from simple open-loop configurations to complex closed-loop ones. GMFS also compares alternative systems.

Analyzing For Light Elements By X-Ray Scattering

Nondestructive method of determining concentrations of low-atomic-number elements in liquids and solids involves measurements of Compton and Rayleigh scattering of x rays. Applied in quantitative analysis of low-atomic-number constituents of alloys, of contaminants and corrosion products on surfaces of alloys, and of fractions of hydrogen in plastics, oils, and solvents.

Neural network architectures to analyze OPAD data

A prototype Optical Plume Anomaly Detection (OPAD) system is now installed on the space shuttle main engine (SSME) Technology Test Bed (TTB) at MSFC. The OPAD system requirements dictate the need for fast, efficient data processing techniques. To address this need of the OPAD system, a study was conducted into how artificial neural networks could be used to assist in the analysis of plume spectral data.

Automated system for analyzing the activity of individual neurons

This paper presents a signal processing system that: (1) provides an efficient and reliable instrument for investigating the activity of neuronal assemblies in the brain; and (2) demonstrates the feasibility of generating the command signals of prostheses using the activity of relevant neurons in disabled subjects. The system operates online, in a fully automated manner and can recognize the transient waveforms of several neurons in extracellular neurophysiological recordings. Optimal algorithms for detection, classification, and resolution of overlapping waveforms are developed and evaluated. Full automation is made possible by an algorithm that can set appropriate decision thresholds and an algorithm that can generate templates on-line. The system is implemented with a fast IBM PC compatible processor board that allows on-line operation.

A distributed system for visualizing and analyzing multivariate and multidisciplinary data

The Linked Windows Interactive Data System (Link Winds) is being developed with NASA support. The objective of this proposal is to adapt and apply that system in a complex network environment containing elements to be found by scientists working multidisciplinary teams on very large scale and distributed data sets. The proposed three year program will develop specific visualization and analysis tools, to be exercised locally and remotely in the Link Winds environment, to demonstrate visual data analysis, interdisciplinary data analysis and cooperative and interactive televisualization and analysis of data by geographically separated science teams. These demonstrations will involve at least two science disciplines with the aim of producing publishable results.

METal matrix composite ANalyzer (METCAN): Theoretical manual

This manuscript is intended to be a companion volume to the 'METCAN User's Manual' and the 'METAN Demonstration Manual.' The primary purpose of the manual is to give details pertaining to micromechanics and macromechanics equations of high temperature metal matrix composites that are programmed in the METCAN computer code. The subroutines which contain the programmed equations are also mentioned in order to facilitate any future changes or modifications that the user may intend to incorporate in the code. Assumptions and derivations leading to the micromechanics equations are briefly mentioned.

A case study of analyzed versus satellite-derived water vapor distributions over the Atlantic Ocean

The paper compares two estimates (one derived from the ECMF analysis and the other from the DMSP Special Sensor Microwave/Imager, SSM/I) of precipitable water content (PWC) over the North Atlantic Ocean during a period of intense cyclone and frontal activity between September 20 and 29, 1987, when two tropical cyclones, Dennis and Emily, moved into midlatitudes and took on extratropical characteristics. The values from the ECMWF analyses consisted of vertical integrals of specific humidity from 1000-300 mb, on a 2.5-deg latitude/longitude grid. The PWC values from the SSM/I were computed using the technique described by Wentz (1983) and were based on retrievals at increments of 25 km. The two distributions of PWC showed very good agreement with each other and with the synoptic patterns depicted.

LEICA - A low energy ion composition analyzer for the study of solar and magnetospheric heavy ions

The SAMPEX LEICA instrument is designed to measure about 0.5-5 MeV/nucleon solar and magnetospheric ions over the range from He to Ni. The instrument is a time-of-flight mass spectrometer which measures particle time-of-flight over an about 0.5 m path, and the residual energy deposited in an array of Si solid state detectors. Large area microchannel plates are used, resulting in a large geometrical factor for the instrument (0.6 sq cm sr) which is essential for accurate compositional measurements in small solar flares, and in studies of precipitating magnetospheric heavy ions.
