Molecular fluctuations inhibit intermittency in compressible turbulence

In the standard picture of fully developed turbulence, highly intermittent hydrodynamic fields are nonlinearly coupled across scales, where local energy cascades from large scales into dissipative vortices and large density gradients. Microscopically, however, constituent fluid molecules are in constant thermal (Brownian) motion, but the role of molecular fluctuations in large-scale turbulence is largely unknown, and with rare exceptions, it has historically been considered irrelevant at scales larger than the molecular mean free path. Recent theoretical and computational investigations have shown that molecular fluctuations can impact energy cascade at Kolmogorov length scales. Here, we show that molecular fluctuations not only modify energy spectrum at wavelengths larger than the Kolmogorov length in compressible turbulence, but also significantly inhibit spatio-temporal intermittency across the entire dissipation range. Using large-scale direct numerical simulations of computational fluctuating hydrodynamics, we demonstrate that the extreme intermittency characteristic of turbulence models is replaced by nearly Gaussian statistics in the dissipation range. These results demonstrate that the compressible Navier–Stokes equations should be augmented with molecular fluctuations to accurately predict turbulence statistics across the dissipation range. Our findings have significant consequences for turbulence modelling in applications such as astrophysics, reactive flows and hypersonic aerodynamics, where dissipation-range turbulence is approximated by closure models.

phosaa14SB and phosaa19SB: Updated Amber Force Field Parameters for Phosphorylated Amino Acids

Phosphorylated amino acids are involved in many cell regulatory networks; proteins containing these post-translational modifications are widely studied both experimentally and computationally. Simulations are used to investigate a wide range of structural and dynamic properties of biomolecules, such as ligand binding, enzyme-reaction mechanisms, and protein folding. However, the development of force field parameters for the simulation of proteins containing phosphorylated amino acids using the Amber program has not kept pace with the development of parameters for standard amino acids, and it is challenging to model these modified amino acids with accuracy comparable to proteins containing only standard amino acids. In particular, the popular ff14SB and ff19SB models do not contain parameters for phosphorylated amino acids. Here, the dihedral parameters for the side chains of the most common phosphorylated amino acids are trained against reference data from QM calculations adopting the ff14SB approach, followed by validation against experimental data. Finally, library files and corresponding parameter files are provided, with versions that are compatible with both ff14SB and ff19SB.

Estimating the value of jointly optimized electric power generation and end use: a study of ISO-scale load shaping applied to the residential building stock

A generation-to-load simulation estimated the impact, in terms of production costs and CO2 emissions, attributable to the joint optimization of electric power generation and flexible end uses to support increasing penetrations of renewable energy. Newly conceived, evaluated, and foundational in developing a U.S. National Standard was a transaction-less yet continuous demand response system based on a day-ahead optimum load shape (OLS) designed to encourage Internet-connected devices to autonomously and voluntarily explore options to favour lowest cost generators - without requiring two-way communications, personally identifiable information, or customer opt-in. Boundary conditions used for model calibration included historical weather, residential building stock construction attributes, home appliance and device empirical operating schedules, prototypical power distribution feeder models, thermal generator heat rates, startup and ramping constraints, and fuel costs. Results of an hourly-based annual case study of Texas indicate a 1/3 reduction in production costs and a 1/5 reduction in CO2 emissions are possible.

Lamination of transparent conductive adhesives for tandem solar cell applications

A transparent conductive adhesive (TCA) interlayer for mechanically stacked multijunction solar cells provides adhesive strength and electrical connection between sub-cells when stacked. The fabrication of TCA sheets from an ethyl-vinyl acetate (EVA) matrix and silver coated compliant conductive microspheres, similar to industry-standard EVA encapsulant sheets, compatible with a standard lamination process was developed. Blade coating TCA sheets using 3D printed blades and testing of vertical conduction through the interlayer with a TCA conductivity jig allowed for reproducible measurements and low-cost fabrication. The supplemental information provides design files to enable other researchers to produce their own blades and testing jigs. We identified 0.5 mm as an optimal blade height for producing lab-scale TCA sheets and 120 °C at 3 psi for 10 min as the optimal vacuum lamination process to minimize resistance and possible damage to samples. For TCA sheets with coverages between 0.75% and 9%, the series resistance was approximately 0.2 O cm2 which should result in minimal losses for one-sun photovoltaic applications.

Electronics for the far-forward CMS muon detector upgrade, ME0

Abstract With the High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) we expect increased instantaneous luminosities up to 7.5 × 10 34 cm −2 s −1 , or five times more than the original values. In order to maintain performance of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment under these conditions, ME0 is one of three new muon sub-detectors being added, along with GE1/1 and GE2/1, which use the triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) technology. ME0 is designed to cover the forward region of 2.0 < | η | < 2.8, thus improving muon reconstruction at high background rates by supplementing other overlapping muon subsystems up to | η | = 2.4, while also extending the acceptance for the first time to | η | = 2.8. The readout electronics for ME0 must be designed to accommodate high data rates and be sufficiently radiation hard to operate close to the beamline. The Optohybrid (OH) board for ME0, which reads out data from the front-end VFAT3b ASICs, has therefore been designed to operate without an FPGA (unlike GE1/1 and GE2/1) to ensure radiation hardness. The ME0 OH uses the radiation-hard CERN-designed lpGBT ASIC and VTRx+ optical transceiver module for high bandwidth optical links up to 10.24 Gb/s. The backend system is based on the ATCA standard. The design and development status of the readout electronics for ME0 is presented, along with recent results from integration tests performed using the first prototypes.

Physiological Adaptations to Progressive Endurance Exercise Training in Adult and Aged Rats: Insights from the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC)

While regular physical activity is a cornerstone of health, wellness, and vitality, the impact of endurance exercise training on molecular signaling within and across tissues remains to be delineated. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) was established to characterize molecular networks underlying the adaptive response to exercise. Here, we describe the endurance exercise training studies undertaken by the Preclinical Animal Sites Studies component of MoTrPAC, in which we sought to develop and implement a standardized endurance exercise protocol in a large cohort of rats. To this end, Adult (6-mo) and Aged (18-mo) female (n = 151) and male (n = 143) Fischer 344 rats were subjected to progressive treadmill training (5 d/wk, ~70%–75% VO 2 max) for 1, 2, 4, or 8 wk; sedentary rats were studied as the control group. A total of 18 solid tissues, as well as blood, plasma, and feces, were collected to establish a publicly accessible biorepository and for extensive omics-based analyses by MoTrPAC. Treadmill training was highly effective, with robust improvements in skeletal muscle citrate synthase activity in as little as 1–2 wk and improvements in maximum run speed and maximal oxygen uptake by 4–8 wk. For body mass and composition, notable age- and sex-dependent responses were observed. This work in mature, treadmill-trained rats represents the most comprehensive and publicly accessible tissue biorepository, to date, and provides an unprecedented resource for studying temporal-, sex-, and age-specific responses to endurance exercise training in a preclinical rat model.

Detector Instrumentation, Energy Reconstruction and Data Analysis in the DUNE and NOvA Neutrino Experiments

Neutrino oscillations are so far the only experimental observation beyond the standard model since its development four decades ago. The remaining fundamental questions that can be answered by long-baseline neutrino oscillations are (1) the CP violation (whether neutrinos and antineutrinos behave the same way in oscillation), and (2) the mass hierarchy ($m_3>m_{1,2}$ or $m_{1,2}>m_3$), and (3) the octant of $\theta_{23}$ ($\theta_{23}>45^\circ, =45^\circ$ or $<45^\circ$). The PI's group at UCI focuses on long-baseline neutrino experiments DUNE and NOvA, key components of DOE's Intensity Frontier program. NOvA is the current major U.S.-based long-baseline neutrino experiment aiming to solve the mass hierarchy and $\theta_{23}$ octant. It is taking $\nu$ and $\bar{\nu}$ data from the NuMI beam at Fermilab. DUNE is the next-generation flagship neutrino experiment in the U.S. which is designed to decisively determine neutrino CP violation, mass hierarchy and $\theta_{23}$ octant. DUNE is Fermilab's first priority, and has been established as an international collaboration. During the period covered by the report, the PI's group has been exceptionally productive, with leading contributions to DUNE argon-purity monitoring detectors, NOvA/DUNE deep-learning reconstruction, and NOvA oscillation and near detector (ND) analyses. The group also is actively involved in DUNE/NOvA detector operation, data production, calibration, software upgrade and maintenance, and ProtoDUNE cold electronic QA/QC. Specifically, we have made accomplishments in the following four research projects: 1) Purity monitor R\&D and data analysis for DUNE, 2) Deep-learning-based energy reconstruction at NOvA and DUNE, 3) Oscillation analysis at NOvA, and 4) $\nu$-e elastic scattering analysis at NOvA.

Investigation of Cycling Coal-Fired Power Plants Using High-Fidelity Models

The project delivers a well-integrated and validated simulation platform for cycling operation analysis in coal-fired power plant. Two critical mechanical components of the boiler island were analyzed through mechanical integrity assessment and economic benefit analysis. The current phase of the project focuses on the development of the integrated simulation infrastructure and prove its feasibility and effectiveness using two typical use cases. This integrated platform can help save a lot of engineering efforts for model development and simulation analysis. Through the real simulation scenarios in this document, it was demonstrated that using this platform, an analysis can be completed in approximately 2 days, while it could cost several weeks before using this platform. Going forward, the platform built in this project can be used for more boiler service applications, and it can be further enhanced with more functions/features to maximize its usage and benefits. 1) Extend component-level analysis with more use cases to cover all the major critical components of boiler island under cycling operations. A library of critical components can be developed and validated for typical pulverized coal-fired subcritical boiler units. 2) Develop predictive maintenance features based on the integrated models (Digital Twins) and engineering analysis procedures. Predictive maintenance enables each asset to be serviced based on forecast on life consumption and cost profile for replacing/welding the critical mechanical parts of the boiler. This minimizes the chance of unscheduled shutdowns and emergency services at much higher costs and prevent the fatal accidents in unit operations. 3) Develop and maintain a standard library for critical component analysis under flexible plant operations, which will include libraries of: process models, MI models for typical pressure parts, and economic models with typical plant operating data and ISO power trade data.

Uranium Holdup Monitoring with Compton Imaging as Function of Depth and Mass

Material Control and Accountability (MC&A) programs track masses of materials flowing through production processes, where some material remains in process equipment as holdup. Quantification of these masses using gamma emissions typically involves usage of a well characterized radiation detector and assumptions of geometric configuration to constrain detection efficiencies, where the Generalized Geometry Holdup (GGH) method is often used. Uncertainties on the order of ±50% are observed, where the difficulties arise based on the asymmetric and gradient distributions of material that do not fall within the bounds of GGH. Gamma imagers provide a possible means to improve this geometric knowledge. This work describes the process used in creating a series of mass standards to aid the development of imaging algorithms for quantification.

Impact of Radiation on the Electronic Structure of MoS 2

Electrons in a semiconductor occupy states within certain energy ranges, called energy bands. The position of the Fermi level with respect to these energy bands determines the charge carrier type of the semiconductor. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is a two-dimensional, n-type semiconductor with potential applications in flexible electronics, transparent electronics, and optoelectronics. Electronic devices containing MoS 2 could be used in environments where radiation affects device performance. Thus, it is important to determine the impact of radiation on MoS 2 . A one-molecule-thick layer of MoS 2 (monolayer) and a two-molecule-thick layer of MoS 2 (bilayer) were placed onto different areas of a gold (Au) substrate containing 1.2-µm-deep holes. The MoS 2 was suspended over these holes but supported by the Au elsewhere on the substrate. This sample configuration was used to determine the effect of He + radiation on the electronic properties of the suspended MoS 2 and the Au-supported MoS 2 . The MoS 2 was irradiated by He+ ions in two stages. The energy bands of the MoS 2 were measured with respect to the Fermi level via photoelectron emission microscopy before irradiation and after each irradiation stage. From each measurement, the charge carrier type of the MoS 2 after the corresponding irradiation stage was determined. The Fermi levels of the suspended monolayer and bilayer decreased by ≈0.15 eV with respect to the bands during the first irradiation stage During the second irradiation stage, however, the Fermi levels didn’t change significantly. This lack of change supports the existence of a radiation threshold, above which the electronic properties of suspended MoS 2 remain the same. The Fermi levels of the supported monolayer and bilayer increased over the cumulative irradiation and didn’t show evidence of a threshold. Thus, suspended MoS 2 becomes less n-type as it is irradiated. Supported MoS 2 , however, becomes more n-type as it is irradiated. These results could inform the development of radiation tolerance standards for MoS 2 , and thus, radiation-tolerant MoS 2 -based electronics.

Improving Economics of Generation 3 CSP System Components Through Fabrication and Application of High Temperature Nickel-Based Alloys

To improve the efficiency and lower the cost of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) plants, new Generation 3 ‘Gen 3’ CSP concepts using novel salts, solids, or gas heattransfer media envisaged to integrated with a supercritical CO 2 (sCO 2 ) power block at temperatures >715ºC are being investigated. Regardless of the specific pathway, critical components including receivers, piping, and heat-exchangers (HXs) will require the use of heat-resistant nickel-based alloys. Furthermore, the use of age-hardenable alloys, such as INCONEL® alloy 740H® (alloy 740H) may be needed to reduce capital cost. The unique challenges presented by CSP plants to material manufacture, such as small diameter thin-walled tubing in receivers, large diameter thin wall piping, and thin sheet and tubes for HXs can add to the cost to produce such alloys when compared to traditional wrought and cast processing. The goal of this project was to facilitate a reduction of plant cost by developing alternate manufacturing routes and quantifying the performance and economic benefits for alloy 740H in comparison to other candidate nickel-based alloys through fabrication trials, high-temperature mechanical property studies, and interactions with technology developers and codes and standards.

Metal Scrap Upcycling with Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE)

The overarching objective of this project is to convert metal scraps, such as aluminum, titanium, and other alloys provided by the industry, into extruded tubing, wires, and rods. Upcycling of scrap will be accomplished using Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE). This approach is a new solution for recycling. The specific aims of this project are as follows: 1. Receive metal scrap under a Material Transfer Agreement (MTA), in the form of billets, from select industry partners that meet the following requirements: outer diameter of 1.245 inches (+/-0.003 inches), inner diameter drilled with a 0.404-inch drill bit, and a length of 4.0 inches (+/-0.01 inches). The billet must be cast or compacted to greater than 98% density. If the industry partner does not have the capabilities to prepare the billets, PNNL can make introductions to third-party entities as needed. Industry partners will also provide a composition analysis as weight percent. 2. Extrude metal scrap via the ShAPE process at PNNL. 3. Evaluate and benchmark the extrudate material properties per the ASTM B557-15 – Testing Tubulars Standard or similar wire and rod standards. 4. Characterize the extrudate microstructure for any of the following: grain size, second phase composition, and texture. Additional testing may include corrosion per the ASTM B117 standard and electro-potential. 5. Deliver specimens to industry partners under an MTA for additional third-party evaluations. Industry partners will, in return, provide a non-proprietary report on any testing, including testing per the ASTM B557-15, ASTM B117, and other industry standards. 6. PNNL will develop data and insights to support intellectual property capture, a published non-proprietary technical report, research collaborations, and commercialization opportunities.

Assessment of Potential Failure Modes and Effects for On-Board Components for Hydrogen-Powered Locomotives

Hydrogen fuel sources offer alternatives to conventional fuels in the rail transportation industry. Hydrogen powered locomotive designs utilizing either a fuel cell or an internal combustion engine can make migration to alternative fuels possible for rail transportation. Codes and standards are still in development for rail application of hydrogen and safety risks must be assessed for hydrogen locomotive applications. This report utilizes a failure mode & effects analysis framework to help qualitatively understand possible risks from a hydrogen locomotive system. Findings illustrate how a combination of three mitigations greatly reduces the risks from a hydrogen locomotive system.
