Impact cratering calculations. Part 1: Early time results

Early time two dimensional finite difference calculations of laboratory scale hypervelocity impact of 0.3 g spherical 2024 aluminum projectiles into homogeneous plasticene clay targets were performed. Analysis of resulting material motions showed that energy and momentum were coupled quickly from the aluminum projectile to the target material. In the process of coupling, some of the plasticene clay target was vaporized while the projectile become severely deformed. The velocity flow field developed within the target was shown to have features similar to those found in calculations of near surface explosion cratering. Specific application of Maxwell's analytic Z-Model showed that this model can be used to describe the early time flow fields resulting from the impact cratering calculations as well, provided the flow field centers are located beneath the target surface and most of the projectile momentum is dissipated before the model is applied.

Nonsynchronous vibrations observed in a supercritical power transmission shaft

A flexible shaft is prone to a number of vibration phenomena which occur at frequencies other than synchronous with rotational speed. Nonsynchronous vibrations from several sources were observed while running a test rig designed to simulate the operation of a supercritical power transmission shaft. The test rig was run first with very light external damping and then with a higher level of external damping, for comparison. As a result, the effect of external damping on the nonsynchronous vibrations of the test rig was observed. All of these nonsynchronous vibrations were of significant amplitude. Their presence in the vibrations spectra for a supercritical power transmission shaft at various speeds in the operating range indicates that very careful attention to all of the vibration spectra should be made in any supercritical power transmission shafting. This paper presents a review of the analysis performed and a comparison with experimental data. A thorough discussion of the observed nonsynchronous whirl is also provided.

Development of a shingle-type solar cell module

The development of a solar cell module, which is suitable for use in place of shingles on the sloping roofs of residental or commercial buildings, is reported. The design consists of nineteen series-connected 53 mm diameter solar cells arranged in a closely packed hexagon configuration. The shingle solar cell module consists of two basic functional parts: an exposed rigid portion which contains the solar cell assembly, and a semi-flexible portion which is overlapped by the higher courses of the roof installation. Consideration is given to the semi-flexible substrate configuration and solar cell and module-to-module interconnectors. The results of an electrical performance analysis are given and it is noted that high specific power output can be attributed to the efficient packing of the circular cells within the hexagon shape. The shingle should function for at least 15 years, with a specific power output of 98 W/sq w.

Concept definition study of small Brayton cycle engines for dispersed solar electric power systems

Three first-generation Brayton cycle engine types were studied for solar application: a near-term open cycle (configuration A), a near-term closed cycle (configuration B), and a longer-term open cycle (configuration C). A parametric performance analysis was carried out to select engine designs for the three configurations. The interface requirements for the Brayton cycle engine/generator and solar receivers were determined. A technology assessment was then carried out to define production costs, durability, and growth potential for the selected engine types.

Cryogenic cooling study for the advanced limb scanner

The cryogenic operating requirements for a VM refrigerator to be used for detector cooling of the advanced limb scanner (ALS) instrument are defined. Determination of these requirements include consideration of mission and environmental constraints. Based on the operating requirements a detailed refrigerator design and performance analysis is conducted resulting in an optimized VM refrigerator conceptual design. The cooler-instrument-spacecraft interfaces are evaluated resulting in recommendations as to the best approach and most effective concepts resulting in simple and satisfactory interfaces. A preliminary implementation plan and schedule describing the general tasks required to develop, design, manufacture, test, and deliver three VM coolers and required support equipment to support an ALS flight experiment are presented. The result of this effort shows that existing VM cooler technology is sufficient to satisfy ALS mission requirements and schedules.

Advanced flight design systems subsystem performance models. Executive summary

Subsystem performance analysis required in flight design to assess the capability of the environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) to support the flight requirements and define operational procedures under contingency flight conditions is described. Current ECLSS modeling techniques are limited in the variety of configurations and they employ batch mode computer programs execution methods. Improvements in the variety of configurations that are modeled and a reduction in effort required for modeling and analysis is accomplished by developing a modular computer program which operates interactively.

Effects of dust on the heating of Mars' surface and atmosphere

An analysis performed to determine the effect dust particles suspended in Mars' atmosphere have on the radiation reaching the surface both directly and scattered by the dust is described. Additionally, the fraction of incident sunlight directly absorbed by the atmospheric dust is computed. These calculations are done for ranges of dust opacity, incidence angle, surface albedo, and dust albedo, representative of the conditions on Mars. The effect of atmospheric dust on the Bond albedo is discussed. It is shown that direct heating of the atmosphere by dust absorption of solar radiation is adequate to explain Mars' south polar spring temperature inversion. Under most circumstances the presence of dust in Mars' atmosphere produces a lowering of the average surface temperature; this is probably the cause of the anomalously slow south polar cap retreat of 1977. Explicit forms for both the surface heating and the atmospheric heating as a function of the dust opacity, incidence angle, surface albedo and dust albedo are given.

Trade-off results and preliminary designs of Near-Term Hybrid Vehicles

Phase I of the Near-Term Hybrid Vehicle Program involved the development of preliminary designs of electric/heat engine hybrid passenger vehicles. The preliminary designs were developed on the basis of mission analysis, performance specification, and design trade-off studies conducted independently by four contractors. THe resulting designs involve parallel hybrid (heat engine/electric) propulsion systems with significant variation in component selection, power train layout, and control strategy. Each of the four designs is projected by its developer as having the potential to substitute electrical energy for 40% to 70% of the petroleum fuel consumed annually by its conventional counterpart.

An investigation of radiometer design using digital processing techniques

The use of digital signal processing techniques in Dicke switching radiometer design was investigated. The general approach was to develop an analytical model of the existing analog radiometer and identify factors which adversly affect its performance. A digital processor was then proposed to verify the feasibility of using digital techniques to minimize these adverse effects and improve the radiometer performance. Analysis and preliminary test results comparing the digital and analog processing approaches in radiometers design were analyzed.

Computation of wind tunnel model deflections

The experimental deflections for a transport type solid wing model were measured for several single point load conditions. These deflections were compared with those obtained by structural modeling of the wing by using plate and solid elements of Structural Performance Analysis and Redesign (SPAR) program. The solid element representation of the wing showed better agreement with the experimental deflections than the plate representation. The difference between the measured and calculated deflections is about 5 percent.
