Pressure Induced Topological Quantum Phase Transition in Weyl Semimetal T d -MoTe 2

In this paper, we report the temperature and pressure (p max ≃1.5 GPa) evolution of the crystal structure of the Weyl semimetal T d -MoTe 2 by combination of neutron diffraction and the X-ray total scattering experiments. We find that the fundamental non-centrosymmetric structure T d is fully suppressed and transforms into a centrosymmertic 1T' structure at a critical pressure of p cr ~ 1.2–1.4 GPa. This is strong evidence for a pressure induced quantum phase transition (QPT) between topological to a trivial electronic state. Although the topological QPT has strong effect on magnetoresistance, it is interesting that the superconducting (SC) critical temperature T c , the superfluid density, and the SC gap all change smoothly and continuously across p cr and no sudden effects are seen concomitantly with the suppression of the T d structure. This implies that the T c , and thus the SC pairing strength, is unaffected by the topological QPT. However, the QPT requires the change in the SC gap symmetry from non-trivial s +- to a trivial s ++ state, which we discuss in this work. Our systematic characterizations of the structure and SC properties associated with the topological QPT provide deep insight into the pressure induced phase diagram in this topological quantum material.

X-ray Studies of the CDW Ground State and Excitations in High- T C Cuprates

We report charge density wave (CDW) in high-T C cuprates has drawn a lot of attention in the field. In this article, we review some of our recent x-ray studies about the ground state and the excitation spectrum of the CDW. Using high magnetic field to suppress the superconductivity, a three-dimensionally-ordered charge stripe state emerges in YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6+x at low temperatures, which arguably bears the characteristics of the CDW ground state. Regarding excitation spectrum, we utilized the state-of-the-art soft x-ray resonant inelastic scattering (RIXS) and found signatures of dispersive CDW excitations which manifest as some form of interference with the RIXS phonon excitations. This observation provides a new perspective to study the relationship between the CDW, the superconductivity and the putative quantum criticality inside the superconducting dome of the cuprate phase diagram. Within this context, relevant recent experimental studies are also briefly discussed.

Novel Charge-Ordered States in 1 T -IrTe 2

1T-IrTe 2 exhibits an intriguing series of charge-ordered states in both bulk and atomically thin layers. The charge orders in IrTe 2 emerge with consecutive first-order structural transitions involving in-plane Ir–Ir dimerization and interlayer Te–Te depolymerization, resulting in stripe patterns with various periods. Upon chemical doping, 1T-IrTe 2 can also be driven into a superconductor. Despite the intense research effort, a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the charge ordering and its relation to the superconductivity is yet to be reached. This review provides an overview of the novel charge orders and the emergence of superconductivity in IrTe 2 . Finally, we further introduce the recent studies on IrTe 2 nanoflake, in which novel charge orders attainable only in two-dimensional limits lay the grounds for an exotic phase diagram.

Incommensurate Antiferromagnetic Order in the Fe-substituted Bi-2201 Cuprate in the Heavily Overdoped Regime

Elastic neutron scattering experiments showed incommensurate antiferromagnetic peaks in 5% Fe-substituted Bi-2201 cuprate in the non-superconducting heavily overdoped regime. Here, the incommensurability δ ∼ 0.21 is comparable to that observed in Fe-substituted Bi-2201 in the overdoped regime. [Hiraka et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 144501 (2010).] The magnetic correlation length is comparable between the overdoped and non-superconducting heavily overdoped regimes. It is plausible that incommensurate antiferromagnetic order is induced and stabilized by Fe in the heavily overdoped regime, which suggests a robust antiferromagnetic correlation beyond the superconducting dome in the phase diagram.

Ultra-rapid, physics-based development pathway for reactor-relevant RF antenna materials

This paper presents a rapid, atomistically-informed, experimental development pathway for fusion reactor-relevant radio frequency (RF) antenna materials in the Cu-Cr-(Nb,Al,Zr) composition system, with the goal of improving upon GRCop-84. RF antennas in a tokamak fusion reactor will face a unique set of challenges as both structural and functional materials. The desired material must simultaneously achieve and maintain high electrical conductivity, high strength, high thermal conductivity, resist high temperatures, possess low nuclear activation, and incur low damage due to neutron bombardment. The GRCop-84 alloy serves as a starting point for iterative improvement, with the desire to reduce or eliminate Nb from the material to minimize nuclear activation. The rapid development pathway makes use of a multi-target combinatorial thick film sputtering process to produce full ternary phase diagrams on a Si wafer substrate. Transient grating spectroscopy (TGS), a laser-ultrasonic method, will determine spatially-varying thermo-elastic properties, while four terminal electrical conductivity measurements will map out the best per- forming regions of the sample for in-depth study at larger length scales. High energy proton and self-ion irradiation emulates the effects of neutron damage on the thermal/electric properties. With rapid turnaround time (∼days) in terms of mapping radiation damage-induced material property changes in the full ternary system, these techniques allow rapid iteration towards an optimal material, testing hundreds of nearby compositions in the time it took to test one. Focused testing of larger, single composition samples (produced in an arc furnace or by laser sintering) provides data on structural and high power RF properties, and validates our thick-film based workflow.
