Advanced Microscopy for Characterization of High Burnup Commercial UO 2 Fuel Before and After LOCA Testing

This report presents the results from the microstructural examination of high burnup UO 2 under pre- and post- loss of coolant accident (LOCA) conditions. The work in this report builds and expands upon work previously conducted on high burnup UO 2 fuel at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). This work investigates the microstructural evolution that occurs during steady state irradiation of UO 2 , particularly in high burnup fuel. Several high burnup fuel samples were available from historic fuel shipments to ORNL. Microstructural characterization will aid in understanding why the fuel is susceptible to fuel fragmentation and support future work to investigate the formation mechanisms of certain features that form under irradiation. High burnup UO 2 microstructural data is also needed to improve constitutive models intended to predict high burnup fuel fragmentation (HBFF). This report summarizes the microstructural evaluation of these fuel samples to interpret and analyze high burnup fuel microstructures.

Report Outlining Computed Tomography Strategy and Microscopy Approach to Qualifying AM 316 Materials

This report is part of work package CR-22OR0406012, Automated, High-Throughput Materials Characterization Techniques , under the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies program (AMMT). The project’s primary objective is to leverage our AI-based rapid and high-throughput automated characterization framework to qualify additively manufactured 316 materials comprehensively, focusing on optimizing the additive manufacturing process and evaluating the performance of 3D-printed stainless steel components. This report outlines our strategy for leveraging the automated characterization process for qualifying 316H materials.

2D IR Microscopy—Technology for Visualizing Chemical Dynamics in Heterogeneous Environments (Final Technical Report)

The primary focus of this project was the design, prototype, and demonstration of a 2D IR microscope. The start date of this project was July 15, 2016 and the project end date was July 14, 2022. In the early years of this project our team designed, prototyped, and completely integrated a homebuilt microscope head with our high-repetition rate 2D IR spectrometer. Once in place our research team focused on characterizing the 2D IR microscope and using it to investigate model systems relevant to energy technologies. As part of this process, we identified two initial chemical systems to use to further develop 2D IR imaging modalities. The first chemical system developed was a room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) electrolyte system and the second chemical system was a mixture of carbonates and salts developed as a battery electrolyte system. The completion of this project resulted in the full characterization of chemical dynamics in a bulk RTIL system and the demonstration of 2D IR imaging across the RTIL cast as a microdroplet in silicon oil. In addition, we explored the liquid structures and dynamics of organic carbonate mixtures from the vantage point of the vibrational probe, methyl thiocyanate. By the end of the project, we had moved toward in-depth studies of the organic carbonate mixtures.
