Cyberinfrastructure for the democratization of smart manufacturing

“Smart Manufacturing” is the transformation of U.S. manufacturing that results from disrupting traditional business, organizational, operating, and market structures with a radical increase in the availability and use of real-time operations data to produce value in previously inconceivable ways—a transformation process known as “manufacturing digitalization” or “manufacturing digital transformation.” There are significant economic and investment opportunities with substantially increased supply chain productivity and far better product design with process and machine precision and performance for highervalue products manufactured better, faster, cheaper with less energy and material.

Hybrid Modeling in the Era of Smart Manufacturing

Smart manufacturing (SM) is a new paradigm that allows manufacturing to enter its fourth revolution by exploiting state-of-the art sensing, communication and computation as the Industrial Internet of Things (IioT). Via the use of high-performance computing and advanced modeling, SM aims to improve the flexibility and adaptability of manufacturing. This paper addresses this trend by reviewing the combined use of data-driven and knowledge-enabled hybrid models (HM), and discusses how such techniques seamlessly fit in the SM platform. Furthermore, a discussion of the new paradigms of HM enabled by the SM platform is given, highlighting their importance in future large-scale applications of the SM platform.

A trilevel model against false gas-supply information attacks in electricity systems

The interdependence between natural gas and electricity systems is increasing rapidly due to the growing reliance on natural gas-fired generating units. Availability of natural gas for gas-fired generating units can impact the secure operation of electricity systems. Fuel supply shortage for gas-fired units can be caused by uncertain interruptible supply contracts and incorrect supply information. This article proposes a trilevel min-max-min defender-attacker-operator optimization problem to provide the power system operator a screening methodology that allocates a limited budget for best protecting critical fuel supply information, and also the strategies to sign firm supply contract to reduce natural gas supply uncertainties. We utilize a column and constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm to solve the proposed problem. We illustrate the effectiveness of this trilevel formulation using a case study based on IEEE 24-node test system.

Communication-efficient certificate revocation management for Advanced Metering Infrastructure and IoT Integration

Advanced Metering Infrastructure forms a communication network for the collection of power data from smart meters in Smart Grid. As the communication between smart meters could be secured utilizing public-key cryptography, however, public-key cryptography still has certain challenges in terms of certificate revocation and management particularly related distribution and storage overhead of revoked certificates. To address this challenge, in this work, we propose a novel revocation management approach by utilizing cryptographic accumulators which reduces the space requirements for revocation information significantly and thus enables efficient distribution of such information to all smart meters. We implemented the proposed approach on both ns-3 network simulator and a testbed. We demonstrated its superior performance with respect to traditional methods for revocation management.

Resilient information and inference networks under mixed-trust sensing

With ubiquitous digitization, sensing, and computational intelligence deployed in increasingly more and broader domains, including critical infrastructure, potentially misleading and destabilizing effects of multimodal anomalies and adversarial behavior are growing in importance. Here, we develop randomized and reinforcement learning-based strategies for strategically recruiting and utilizing deployed (and, thus, vulnerable and potentially faulty and/or compromised) nodes from information and inference networks, while defending against adversaries that attempt to misguide assessments of inferred variables. Recognizing that, besides communication and other costs, sampling from any observable node can either provide true data or dangerously expose our inference to misinformation (without being easily distinguishable what actually happens), the proposed strategies proceed by progressively recruiting nodes and cautiously scaling their information contribution based on assumed, or, in our reinforcement learning approach, intelligently weighed trustworthiness, with the learning approach also considering network-wide, threat-inclusive risk/value tradeoffs. While avoiding the hardware, communication, analytical and computational burden of explicit redundancy, the proposed defensive schemes enable on-the-fly assessments of underlying processes, and system-wide situational awareness with demonstrable resilience against adversarial activities.

A contextual sensor system for non-intrusive machine status and energy monitoring

Event-driven contexts in manufacturing occur pervasively as a result of interactions among involved entities such as machines, workers, materials, and environment. One of the primary tasks in smart manufacturing is to derive a context-aware system conveniently incorporating worker knowledge for generating timely actionable intelligence for workers on factory floor and supervisors to respond. In this paper, we propose to design a human-and-machine interaction recognition framework by using a causality concept to collect contextual data for classifications of normal and abnormal machine operations. The causes and effects are between workers and machines for this initial research. To apply the causality to recognize worker interactions, initially a reliable way to identify the states of machines is necessary. The proposed contextual sensor system, consisting of a power meter for measuring machine operation conditions, a visual camera for capturing worker and machine interactions via a finite state machine model, and an algorithm for determining power signatures of individual components via energy disaggregation is implemented on semiconductor fabrication machines (manual or PLC controlled) each with multiple components. The experiment results demonstrate its context extraction capability such as components states and their corresponding energy usage in real time as well as its ability to identify anomalous operation conditions.

MARVEL Reactor Digital Engineering Developments

The MARVEL reactor project has served to introduce a new generation of engineers to the processes required to transform a reactor design from simply an idea on paper into what will be an approved, constructed, and operational nuclear power system. Much as there have been advances in materials, analysis, and evaluation methodologies over the 50 years since the last reactor was built at INL, so too has the technology for managing the engineering process itself advanced. Digital Engineering tools and methods provide improved coordination between previously siloed engineering disciplines, reduced burdens of non-value-added data transcription processes and bring forward insights and improvements that might otherwise fall later in the design stage, where changes are much more costly. While the tools and techniques to support the full digital engineering vision are not yet complete, the MARVEL design processes provide valuable demonstrations and validations of key aspects and illuminate further areas for implementation by subsequent projects.

A Real-Time Implementation and Validation of Federated Learning for Grid Services

Grid-edge devices are becoming increasingly important in the energy transition. Preserving privacy was not previously considered an important aspect for power grid operations, but with the increased proliferation of customer-owned assets, it is now an essential consideration. Several mechanisms have been proposed to provide privacy for non-utility owned assets in the power grid. Federated learning (FL) is one method gaining prominence in this area. Although FL has been used for other applications, such as auto-complete in phones, there has not been much investigation into whether these approaches are feasible for grid applications. In this work, we use a research platform with real-time simulators and hardware-in-the-loop capabilities to investigate how FL can be applied to grid-edge devices, and we present the potential grid services that can be derived for these devices. We discuss the computational challenges with deploying complex FL approaches, and we explore several grid services, including participation in retail electricity markets, voltage control, and resilience-driven reconfiguration.

Data-driven Vulnerability Analysis of Networked Pipeline System

This paper introduces an attack generation framework for evaluating the vulnerability of nonlinear networked pipeline systems. The vulnerability analysis is formulated as determining the presence of feasible attack sets, defined by boundary functions representing the effectiveness and stealthiness of attack signals with respect to the objective and attack detection module. The framework utilizes three data-driven models, including two discriminative models that learn the boundary functions and a generative model that produces elements of the feasible attack set. A new loss function ensures successful attack generation with high probability.

Transformer Health Monitoring via Synchrophasors

Traditional transformer protection schemes such as differential protection operate once the transformer is in a critical state. Proactive means of transformer health evaluation such as Sweep Frequency Response Analysis, can only be performed periodically with the transformer out-of-service. This work presents a framework where the health and structural integrity of transformers is monitored via synchrophasors in real-time. Synchrophasors and subspace estimation techniques are used to build reduced-order models which are then analyzed across multiple domains. A diagnostics algorithm is developed and tested via Matlab simulations. Test results are promising, opening up new prospects in transformer protection research.

Security Enhancement of Network Constraint Grid-Edge Energy Management System

Network constrained grid edge energy management system (EMS) provides economic solution for active and reactive power dispatch of distributed energy resources (DERs) at the grid edge level. Grid edge EMS ensures secure interconnection of a circuit segment to the distribution system by maintaining grid code requirements (e.g. IEEE 1547–2018). Grid edge EMS is dependent on communication to receive load measurement, which brings a risk of unobservable false data injection attacks (FDIAs). To mitigate the risk, this paper proposes a framework to enhance resilient operation of grid edge EMS by detecting the unobservable FDIAs on loads and replacing them with forecasted values. In this work, a two-step detection algorithm is proposed. In first step, conventional residual based algorithm is deployed. Autoencoder (AE) based data driven mechanism is included in second step to detect the presence of unobservable FDIAs. After ensuring the presence of FDIA, its specific location is detected by checking the maximum residue values till the predefined threshold value is reached. Detected false data injected loads are then replaced with forecasted load values following long-short term memory (LSTM) based forecast to ensure resilient performance of grid edge EMS in the presence of attacks. This proposed security enhancement framework for grid edge EMS is evaluated in IEEE 13 bus system with three integrated DERs. Numerical simulation shows the validation of the proposed framework by reducing voltage violation in real operation of grid edge EMS.

Automated Vehicle Multi-Object Tracking at Scale with CAN

Millions of vehicles are on the road with RADAR sensors in use for adaptive cruise control (ACC), and RADAR sen- sors are not tracking all of the objects in the field of view. This work shows a work-in-progress tool to improve track- ing from RADAR and controller area network (CAN) which should be vitally useful for safety of transportation systems and automated vehicle development. The CAN data provides object detections, but there is a lingering data association problem. The contribution of this work in progress is the solution to the data association problem by posing the data association as a minimum cost network flow problem, and doing it at low cost with an eye toward scalable CPS research.

Linking Threat Agents to Targeted Organizations: A Pipeline for Enhanced Cybersecurity Risk Metrics

In this study, we present a methodology leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to transform Cybersecurity Threat Intelligence (CTI) narratives into actionable insights for individual organizations. Our approach automates the extraction of machine-readable adversary SKRAM (Skills, Knowledge, Resources, Authorities, and Motivation) attributes from open-source reports, extending LLM utility beyond typical interactions. This innovation enables precise, automated assessments of cybersecurity risks posed by various adversaries. Using a chain-of-thought and multi-shot prompting strategy, our methodology advances the automation of cybersecurity feature extraction for new machine-learning models that predict the risk of adversary targeting. This approach is refined using a substantial dataset of over 150 analyst-validated threat reports and synthetic organizational data from 900 companies. Here, by bootstrapping the training data with a rule-based heuristic over synthetic data, we have developed a high-accuracy machine-learning model that allows entities to dynamically prioritize threats and defensive actions.
