Interaction models and configurational entropies of binary MoTa and the MoNbTaW high entropy alloy

We introduce a simplified method to model the interatomic interactions of high entropy alloys based on a lookup table of cluster energies. Furthermore, these interactions are employed in replica exchange Monte Carlo simulations with histogram analysis to obtain thermodynamic properties across a broad temperature range. Kikuchi's cluster variation method entropy formalism is applied to directly calculate entropy from statistics on short- and long-range chemical order, and we discuss the convergence of the entropy as clusters of differing size are included. A high temperature series expansion aids in our understanding of the convergence. Computer codes implementing these methods, and supporting data, are freely available on the internet.

Evaluating Recombination Mechanisms in RbF Treated Cu(In${}_\mathrm{x}$Ga$_\mathrm{1-x}$)Se$_{2}$ Solar Cells

Rubidium fluoride (RbF) postdeposition treatment (PDT) has been shown to improve the performance of Cu(In x Ga 1-x )Se 2 (CIGS) photovoltaic devices. Here, in this study, temperature-dependent current voltage (JVT) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) experiments were combined with modeling using the solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS) computer code to investigate the effect of the RbF PDT. Two devices, one as-deposited and one with RbF PDT, were deposited by a three stage coevaporation process. JVT measurements suggest the dominant recombination mechanism may be tunneling-enhanced recombination via bandtail states, but that defect states in the bandgap can also be important. RbF PDT is shown to decrease the characteristic energy of the bandtails. TRPL data show an increase in the minority carrier lifetime after RbF PDT, leading to an improved open-circuit voltage. SCAPS modeling indicates that the dominant recombination mechanism is dependent on the specific defect makeup of a device, suggesting that small changes in processing conditions can impact device behavior. This explains the observation that, for some devices, defect states in the gap dominate while others, as is the case here, appear to be dominated by bandtails.

Co-design for Particle Applications at Exascale

Co-design across the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) has been critical for both enabling science applications and bringing disparate communities together. Developing and porting applications to the various high-performance computing (HPC) architectures on pre-exascale and exascale computers has been quite challenging due to the diversity of hardware features and software stacks. The Co-design Center for Particle Applications (CoPA) has developed and enhanced the Cabana and PROGRESS/BML libraries to facilitate the creation of new particle applications, make existing particle applications exascale capable, and allow teams to explore new capabilities. Particle methods from atomistic, mesoscale, continuum, through cosmological scales have been built with Cabana, along with new possibilities for application coupling. Similarly, the PROGRESS/BML library has enabled quantum particle applications with linear algebra solvers to use advanced hardware. Across these CoPA-developed libraries, the co-design abstraction layer combines performance portability with math library support to facilitate separation of concerns and directly support science runs.

Serpentine Magnet Designs for the Interaction Region of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC)

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), hosted by Brookhaven National Laboratory, is designed to deliver a peak luminosity of 1 × 10 34 cm −2 sec −1 . The interaction region (IR) of the EIC imposes several constraints in terms of field quality, aperture, and spatial layout, which necessitates the development of several unique superconducting serpentine direct wind magnets. These magnets are constructed using either a single strand or a small-diameter 6-around-1 NbTi cable, presenting unique challenges for design and optimization. This paper introduces a new computational code specifically developed to streamline and integrate the design process for these magnets, enabling faster design iterations while addressing their complex requirements. Here, in this paper, we first introduce the code, which builds on established electromagnetic fundamentals. The code incorporates tools for optimizing winding patterns and for correcting magnetic multipoles; additionally, it interfaces with established magnet design software. We also present the design of several serpentine magnets for the EIC IR, demonstrating the code’s capability to deliver precise and efficient solutions. These designs highlight the code’s ability to accelerate the development cycle, ensuring the serpentine magnets meet the demanding specifications of the EIC project.

Same Data, Different Audiences: Using Personas to Scope a Supercomputing Job Queue Visualization

Domain-specific visualizations sometimes focus on narrow, albeit important, tasks for one group of users. This focus limits the utility of a visualization to other groups working with the same data. While tasks elicited from other groups can present a design pitfall if not disambiguated, they also present a design opportunity—namely, the development of visualizations that support multiple groups. This development choice presents a trade-off of broadening the scope but limiting support for the more narrow tasks of any one group, which in some cases can enhance the overall utility of the visualization. We investigate this scenario through a design study where we develop Guidepost, a notebook-embedded visualization of data that helps scientists assess compute wait times, machine learning researchers understand prediction accuracy, and system maintainers analyze usage trends. We adapt the use of personas for visualization design from existing literature in the HCI and design domains, applying them to categorize tasks based on their uniqueness across stakeholder personas. Under this model, tasks shared between all groups should be supported by interactive visualizations and tasks unique to each group can be deferred to scripting with notebook-embedded visualization design. We evaluate our visualization through real-world case studies and a task-focused evaluation with nine participants. We observe that together, Guidepost's visual encodings, interactions, and export capabilities support the tasks of our differing personas.

Not just for programmers: How GitHub can accelerate collaborative and reproducible research in ecology and evolution

Abstract Researchers in ecology and evolutionary biology are increasingly dependent on computational code to conduct research. Hence, the use of efficient methods to share, reproduce, and collaborate on code as well as document research is fundamental. GitHub is an online, cloud‐based service that can help researchers track, organize, discuss, share, and collaborate on software and other materials related to research production, including data, code for analyses, and protocols. Despite these benefits, the use of GitHub in ecology and evolution is not widespread. To help researchers in ecology and evolution adopt useful features from GitHub to improve their research workflows, we review 12 practical ways to use the platform. We outline features ranging from low to high technical difficulty, including storing code, managing projects, coding collaboratively, conducting peer review, writing a manuscript, and using automated and continuous integration to streamline analyses. Given that members of a research team may have different technical skills and responsibilities, we describe how the optimal use of GitHub features may vary among members of a research collaboration. As more ecologists and evolutionary biologists establish their workflows using GitHub, the field can continue to push the boundaries of collaborative, transparent, and open research.

Verification, Validation, and Uncertainty Quantification in Thermal Hydraulics, Freeman Scholar Lecture (2019)

Engineering problems are generally solved by analytical models or computer codes. These models, in addition to conservation equations, also include many empirical relationships and approximate numerical methods. Each of these components contributes to the uncertainty in the prediction. A systematic approach to judge the applicability of the code to the intended application is needed. It starts from verification of implementation of formulation in the code, identification of important phenomena, finding relevant tests with quantified uncertainty for these phenomena, and validation of the code by comparing predictions with the relevant test data. The relevant tests must address phenomena as expected in the intended application. In case of small size or limited condition tests, the scaling analyses are needed to assess the relevancy of the tests. Finally, a statement of uncertainty in the prediction is needed. Systematic approaches are described to aggregate uncertainties from different components of the code for intended application. Here, verification, validation, and uncertainty quantifications (VVUQs) are briefly described.

Wave optics simulations for new soft x-ray beamlines at NSLS-II

In this work, we performed fully- and partially-coherent synchrotron emission and propagation simulations with the "Synchrotron Radiation Workshop" computer code to analyze the performance of two soft X-ray beamlines under development at the National Synchrotron Light Source II: Soft X-ray Nanoprobe (SXN), and Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) Imaging (ARI). The SXN beamline intends to provide high flux and high spatial resolution coherent soft X-ray imaging capabilities using both zone plate and lensless coherent imaging techniques. The ARI beamline aims to perform high flux ARPES and RIXS experiments with a focal spot size at the sample approaching 100 nm using highly-demagnifying mirrors in Kirkpatrick-Baez geometry. To accurately calculate the resolution and the degree of X-ray coherence provided by the two state-of-the-art beamlines, partial coherence effects are required to be taken into account in wave optics simulations for these two beamlines. In this talk, beamline performance parameters such as spot size, degree of coherence, flux, and energy resolution at the sample are presented. The effects of mirror surface slope errors on beamline performance were studied and some suggestions for further optimization are discussed.

Simulations of coherent scattering experiments at storage ring synchrotron radiation sources in the hard x-ray range

Detailed simulations of experiments carried out at modern light sources are directly related to the most efficient and productive use of these facilities for research in multiple branches of science and technology. The “Synchrotron Radiation Workshop” computer code with its Python interface, and Sirepo web-browser-based graphical user interface, currently supports physical optics simulations of coherent X-ray scattering and imaging experiments on user-defined virtual samples. We present examples of simulations of coherent scattering experiments that are typically performed at the Coherent Hard X-ray beamline at Brookhaven National Laboratory’s (BNL) National Synchrotron Light Source II. We also present several comparisons of the simulations with the results of actual coherent X-ray scattering experiments with nano-fabricated test samples produced at BNL’s Center for Functional Nanomaterials.

Comparison of SUSY spectra generators for natural SUSY and string landscape predictions

Models of natural supersymmetry give rise to a weak scale m weak ~ m W,Z,h ~ 100 GeV without any (implausible) finetuning of independent contributions to the weak scale. These models, which exhibit radiatively driven naturalness (RNS), are expected to arise from statistical analysis of the string landscape wherein large soft terms are favored, but subject to a not-too-large value of the derived weak scale in each pocket universe of the greater multiverse. The string landscape picture then predicts, using the Isajet SUSY spectra generator Isasugra, a statistical peak at m h ~ 125 GeV with sparticles generally beyond current LHC search limits. In this paper, we investigate how well these conclusions hold up using other popular spectra generators: SOFTSUSY, SPHENO and SUSPECT (SSS). We built a computer code DEW4SLHA which operates on SUSY Les Houches Accord files to calculate the associated electroweak naturalness measure Δ EW . The SSS generators tend to yield a Higgs mass peak ~125–127 GeV with a superparticle mass spectra rather similar to that generated by Isasugra. In an Appendix, we include loop corrections to Δ EW in a more standard notation.

MEUMAPPS (Microstructure Evolution Using Massively Parallel Phase-field Simulations)

The software “MEUMAPPS” is a h high-performance computing code used to simulate microstructure evolution associated with diffusional solid-state transformations in structural alloys. Understanding microstructure evolution during thermo-mechanical processing of structural alloys is the first step towards designing and processing alloys for specific applications by meeting property requirements demanded by the application. In this instance, the code is an important component in predicting processing-structure linkages during additive manufacturing of structural alloys as a function of processing parameters and alloy composition used in an additive manufacturing process. The code provides a detailed three-dimensional distribution of different types of phases / constituents and their morphologies, as well as the compositions of these phases that make up the microstructure. The microstructure is simulated by solving the governing partial differential equations using a Fourier Spectral Method.
