Distributed Inertia Management Under Communication Constraints

This paper presents a framework for distributed inertia management based on consensus algorithm. We propose a methodology to achieve optimal operation of inertia sources such as distributed energy resources (DERs) and synchronous generators in real time. Additionally, we analyze the algorithm under communication constraints and evaluate its robustness under scenarios involving communication time delays and packet losses. The proposed approach is validated via simulations on a 4-node system test feeder, demonstrating its effectiveness and resilience.

Secure Wireless Communication Using Distributed Coherent Transmission and Spatial Signal Decomposition

We present a new approach to secure wireless communications using coherent distributed transmission of signals that are spatially decomposed between a two-element distributed antenna array. High-accuracy distributed coordination of microwave wireless systems supports the ability to transmit different parts of a signal from separate transmitters such that they combine coherently at a designated destination. In this article, we explore this concept using a two-element coherent distributed phased array where each of the two transmitters sends a separate component of a communication signal, where each symbol is decomposed into a sum of two pseudorandom signal vectors, the coherent summation of which yields the intended symbol. By directing the transmission to an intended receiver using distributed beamforming, the summation of the two vector components is largely confined to a spatial region at the destination receiver. We implement the technique in a $50−λ$ array operating at 3 GHz. We evaluate the symbol error rate (SER) in 2-D space through simulation and measurement, showing that the approach yields a spatially confined secure region where the information is recoverable (i.e., the received signal has low SER), and outside of which the information is unrecoverable (high SER). The proposed system is also compared against a traditional beamforming system where each node sends the same data. We validate experimentally that our approach achieves a low SER of 0.0082 at broadside and an SER above 0.25 at all other locations compared to a traditional beamforming approach that achieves a SER of 0 at all locations measured.

Clarifying Terminology in Microbial Ecology: A Call for Precision in Scientific Communication

The rapid evolution of microbiology as a field of research has led to the introduction of new terminology and the adaptation of existing terms. However, inconsistencies in the use of these terms, including variations across different scientific disciplines, can lead to confusion and miscommunication within the scientific community. This article discusses the importance of precise terminology in microbiome research, highlighting examples where terms have been misused or redefined without clear justification. We also present a list of frequently used terms in microbial ecology along with their specific definitions. We argue that the misuse of terminology can hinder scientific progress by creating ambiguity and misunderstanding. To address this, we propose a set of guidelines for the consistent use of key terms and provide clear definitions for some of the most commonly misused or newly introduced terms in the field. The definitions provided herein will also function as a guide for young researchers new to the field of microbial ecology. Accurate and consistent use of terminology is crucial for effective communication and collaboration in microbiology research. By adhering to standardised definitions, researchers can ensure that their work is clearly communicated and contributes meaningfully to the progress of science.

High-fidelity, hyper-accurate, and evolved mutants rewire atomic-level communication in CRISPR-Cas9

The high-fidelity (HF1), hyper-accurate (Hypa), and evolved (Evo) variants of the CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) endonuclease are critical tools to mitigate off-target effects in the application of CRISPR-Cas9 technology. The mechanisms by which mutations in recognition subdomain 3 (Rec3) mediate specificity in these variants are poorly understood. Here, solution nuclear magnetic resonance and molecular dynamics simulations establish the structural and dynamic effects of high-specificity mutations in Rec3, and how they propagate the allosteric signal of Cas9. We reveal conserved structural changes and dynamic differences at regions of Rec3 that interface with the RNA:DNA hybrid, transducing chemical signals from Rec3 to the catalytic His-Asn-His (HNH) domain. The variants remodel the communication sourcing from the Rec3 α helix 37, previously shown to sense target DNA complementarity, either directly or allosterically. This mechanism increases communication between the DNA mismatch recognition helix and the HNH active site, shedding light on the structure and dynamics underlying Cas9 specificity and providing insight for future engineering principles.

Minimizing CGYRO HPC Communication Costs in Ensembles with XGYRO by Sharing the Collisional Constant Tensor Structure

First-principles fusion plasma simulations are both compute and memory intensive, and CGYRO is no exception. The use of many HPC nodes to fit the problem in the available memory thus results in significant communication overhead, which is hard to avoid for any single simulation. That said, most fusion studies are composed of ensembles of simulations, so we developed a new tool, named XGYRO, that executes a whole ensemble of CGYRO simulations as a single HPC job. By treating the ensemble as a unit, XGYRO can alter the global buffer distribution logic and apply optimizations that are not feasible on any single simulation, but only on the ensemble as a whole. The main saving comes from the sharing of the collisional constant tensor structure, since its values are typically identical between parameter-sweep simulations. This data structure dominates the memory consumption of CGYRO simulations, so distributing it among the whole ensemble results in drastic memory savings for each simulation, which in turn results in overall lower communication overhead.

Parsed synthesis of pyocyanin via co-culture enables context-dependent intercellular redox communication

Abstract Background Microbial co-cultures and consortia are of interest in cell-based molecular production and even as “smart” therapeutics in that one can take advantage of division of labor and specialization to expand both the range of available functions and mechanisms for control. The development of tools that enable coordination and modulation of consortia will be crucial for future application of multi-population cultures. In particular, these systems would benefit from an expanded toolset that enables orthogonal inter-strain communication. Results We created a co-culture for the synthesis of a redox-active phenazine signaling molecule, pyocyanin (PYO), by dividing its synthesis into the generation of its intermediate, phenazine carboxylic acid (PCA) from the first strain, followed by consumption of PCA and generation of PYO in a second strain. Interestingly, both PCA and PYO can be used to actuate gene expression in cells engineered with the soxRS oxidative stress regulon, although importantly this signaling activity was found to depend on growth media. That is, like other signaling motifs in bacterial systems, the signaling activity is context dependent. We then used this co-culture’s phenazine signals in a tri-culture to modulate gene expression and production of three model products: quorum sensing molecule autoinducer-1 and two fluorescent marker proteins, eGFP and DsRed. We also showed how these redox-based signals could be intermingled with other quorum-sensing (QS) signals which are more commonly used in synthetic biology, to control complex behaviors. To provide control over product synthesis in the tri-cultures, we also showed how a QS-induced growth control module could guide metabolic flux in one population and at the same time guide overall tri-culture function. Specifically, we showed that phenazine signal recognition, enabled through the oxidative stress response regulon soxRS, was dependent on media composition such that signal propagation within our parsed synthetic system could guide different desired outcomes based on the prevailing environment. In doing so, we expanded the range of signaling molecules available for coordination and the modes by which they can be utilized to influence overall function of a multi-population culture. Conclusions Our results show that redox-based signaling can be intermingled with other quorum sensing signaling in ways that enable user-defined control of microbial consortia yielding various outcomes defined by culture medium. Further, we demonstrated the utility of our previously designed growth control module in influencing signal propagation and metabolic activity is unimpeded by orthogonal redox-based signaling. By exploring novel multi-modal strategies for guiding communication and consortia outcome, the concepts introduced here may prove to be useful for coordination of multiple populations within complex microbial systems.

Confidentiality-preserving machine learning algorithms for soft-failure detection in optical communication networks

Automated fault management is at the forefront of next-generation optical communication networks. The increase in complexity of modern networks has triggered the need for programmable and software-driven architectures to support the operation of agile and self-managed systems. In these scenarios, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute zero-touch network and service management approach is imperative. The need for machine learning algorithms to process the large volume of telemetry data brings safety concerns as distributed cloud-computing solutions become the preferred approach for deploying reliable communication network automation. This paper’s contribution is twofold. First, we propose a simple yet effective method to guarantee the confidentiality of the telemetry data based on feature scrambling. The method allows the operation of third-party computational services without direct access to the full content of the collected data. Additionally, the effectiveness of four unsupervised machine learning algorithms for soft-failure detection is evaluated when applied to the scrambled telemetry data. The methods are based on factor analysis, principal component analysis, nonlinear principal component analysis, and singular value decomposition. Most dimensionality reduction algorithms have the common property that they can maintain similar levels of fault classification performance while hiding the data structure from unauthorized access. Evaluations of the proposed algorithms demonstrate this capability.

Generation of multiple obstruction-free channels for free space optical communication

Multi-filament structures produced by vortical high-power femtosecond pulses propagating through clouds and fog can simultaneously clear two channels with cylindrical and annular profile. We present a method to achieve Free Space Optical (FSO) communications through such highly scattering media by propagating appropriately shaped laser modes through these channels. As a proof of concept, we implemented a Laguerre-Gaussian beam as information signal carrier to demonstrate transmission of 543-nm CW laser beam through a 1-m long cloud chamber using both channels. The low power of the information signal in this experiment allows considering applications in Earth–satellite FSO communication.

Chip-scale frequency combs for data communications in computing systems

Recent developments in chip-based frequency-comb technology demonstrate that comb devices can be implemented in applications where photonic integration and power efficiency are required. The large number of equally spaced comb lines that are generated make combs ideal for use in communication systems, where each line can serve as an optical carrier to allow for massively parallel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission. In this review, we summarize the developments in integrated frequency-comb technology for use as a WDM source for communication systems in data centers and high-performance computing systems. We highlight the following three approaches for chip-scale comb generation: semiconductor modelocked lasers, electro-optic combs, and Kerr frequency combs.

Component Importance and Interdependence Analysis for Transmission, Distribution and Communication Systems

For critical infrastructure restoration planning, the real-time scheduling and coordination of system restoration efforts, the key in decision-making is to prioritize those critical components that are out of service during the restoration. For this purpose, there is a need for component importance analysis. While it has been investigated extensively for individual systems, component importance considering interdependence among transmission, distribution and communication (T&D&C) systems has not been systematically analyzed and widely adopted. In this study, we propose a component importance assessment method in the context of interdependence between T&D&C networks. Analytic methods for multilayer networks and a set of metrics have been applied for assessing the component importance and interdependence between T&D&C networks based on their physical characteristics. The proposed methodology is further validated with integrated synthetic Illinois regional transmission, distribution, and communication (T&D&C) systems, the results reveal the unique characteristics of component/node importance, which are strongly affected by the network topologies and cross-domain node mapping.

Enabling Interoperable SCADA Communications for PV Inverters through Embedded Controllers

The percentage integration of photovoltaic (PV) inverters in the field has increased significantly in the past 5 years. Regardless of the size of the PV plants and the inverters (residential vs. commercial), it is becoming crucial that these devices have the capability to communicate with peers (other smart devices) and with components that are at a hierarchy above the inverters (e.g., supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, distributed controllers, and data managers). This project aims to develop a standard SCADA software code for inverters’ embedded controllers that will enable interoperability with other components in the system. To achieve this, the code will be developed using two different protocols: Distributed Network Protocol 3 and International Electrotechnical Commission 61850. The developed code is aimed to be deployed in simple embedded controllers. It will be tested in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s (NREL’s) Energy Systems Integration Facility. The tested code will then be made available through Triangle MicroWorks’s (TMW’s) software platform. The primary objectives of this project include training the NREL team with TMW’s embedded controller libraries, developing an interoperable communication code for embedded controllers, successfully testing and deploying the code, and demonstrating the newly developed code in a conference.

Visualization for Scientific Discovery, Decision-Making, and Communication

Visualization–the use of visual elements to explore data, form hypotheses, or convey conclusions–is an integral part of the scientific process. Starting from an initial exploration of new data to illustrating outcomes to the general public, visualization is one of the most intuitive and powerful modes of communication. With the explosion of new data sources and types, unprecedented volumes of data, and new technologies, such as virtual reality and AI, visualization has become increasingly essential but also ever more challenging. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) sponsored a Basic Research Needs workshop in January 2022 to understand the major opportunities and grand challenges in visualization tools and technologies for scientific computing, with a special focus on DOE-relevant applications and goals. The workshop identified five priority research directions (PRDs) for visualization to support scientific discovery, decision-making, and communication.

Modeling Communication Infrastructures of Cyber Physical Systems

This effort explores modeling cyber infrastructure, including communication devices like switches, routers, sensors, and controllers, and physical media attributes like propagation of radio signals, in coordination with power distribution system model layouts. To do this, the project studies real-world configurations to define axioms of how different communication media is deployed with control equipment. These axioms will be used to develop tools to generate realistic cyber infrastructure models from starting power system models. This effort leverages and builds on the co-simulation platform developed by the other RD2C projects. The axioms and tools will be validated and demonstrated with the NS3 simulation tool as part of a co-simulation to show the behavior/impacts of cyber infrastructure on control operations.
