The reduction, verification and interpretation of MAGSAT magnetic data over Canada

Research into an approach for altitude adjustments for MAGSAT or similar data acquired over a range of altitudes is progressing. The technique shows promise not only in the production of refined anomaly maps but also in the derivation of regional charts of the magnetic elements from satellite and ground data. Correlations between MAGSAT anomalies and other geophysical and geological data are being explored further and quantitative modelling of some features has begun. The form of some anomalies may change as the maps are refined by the technique being developed. Emphasis is being given to the Canadian regions, although analogous features elsewhere are being considered.

Verification of LANDSAT imagery for morphametric and topological studies of drainage basins in a section of the western plateau of Sao Paulo State: Tiete-Aguapei watershed

The potential of using LANDSAT MSS imagery for morphometric and topological studies of drainage basins was verified. Using Tiete and Aguapei watershed (Western Plateau) as the test site because of its homogeneous landscape. Morphometric variables collected for ten drainage basins include: circularity index; river density; drainage density; topographic texture; areal and index length; basin parameter; and main river length 1st order and 2nd order channel length. The topographical variables determined were: order; magnitude; bifuraction ratio; weighted bifuraction ratio; number of segments; number of linking; trajectory length; and topological diameter. Data were collected on topographical maps at the scale of 1:250,000 and 1:59,000 and on LANDSAT imagery at the scale of 1:250,000. The results which were summarized on tables for further analysis, show that LANDSAT imagery can supply the lack of topographic charts for drainage studies.

Effects of aerodynamic interaction between main and tail rotors on helicopter hover performance and noise

A model test was conducted to determine the effects of aerodynamic interaction between main rotor, tail rotor, and vertical fin on helicopter performance and noise in hover out of ground effect. The experimental data were obtained from hover tests performed with a .151 scale Model 222 main rotor, tail rotor and vertical fin. Of primary interest was the effect of location of the tail rotor with respect to the main rotor. Penalties on main rotor power due to interaction with the tail rotor ranged up to 3% depending upon tail rotor location and orientation. Penalties on tail rotor power due to fin blockage alone ranged up to 10% for pusher tail rotors and up to 50% for tractor tail rotors. The main rotor wake had only a second order effect on these tail rotor/fin interactions. Design charts are presented showing the penalties on main rotor power as a function of the relative location of the tail rotor.

Design for prevention of acoustic fatigue

It is pointed out that new noise prediction methods and acoustic life estimation methods have matured to the point where they can be combined into a unified engineering procedure. "Life derivatives" can be extracted from parametric charts to furnish design data for preventing acoustic fatigue. The acoustic fatigue life is shown to be sensitive to the damping ratio through the use of life derivatives. The localized nature of propeller noise can be quantified with an "isodecibel" contour diagram.Even though the peak sound pressure level may be high, the directional derivatives show the noise decay rates with distance. Acoustic fatigue design is discussed from the overall design methodology and is shown to be similar to other structural design problems. While nonlinearities present a formidable design engineering problem, they are manageable by proven semi-empirical techniques. For new design problems, it is imperative to determine whether the data base completely spans the design variables.

Stability of the Shuttle on-orbit flight control system for a class of flexible payloads

The stability of the Space Shuttle on-orbit flight control system is determined for a class of payloads for which the payload is tilted out of the orbiter bay and the bending can be modeled as localized at a pivot. Examples are the Inertial Upper Stage or the Centaur with attached spacecraft during deployment. The many inertial, geometric, and jet option parameters are reduced to a smaller set which allows the determination of stability or instability as a function of bending frequency and the other elements of the set. The resulting stability charts, which are presented, can be used by payload designers and misssion planners to predict possible instability without elaborate analysis or simulation.
