Evaluation of areas prepared for planting using LANDSAT data

Three different algorithms (SINGLE-CELL, MAXVER and MEDIA K) were used to automatically interpret data from LANDSAT observations of an area of Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. Photographic transparencies were obtained, projected and visually interpreted. The results show that: (1) the MAXVER algorithm presented a better classification performance; (2) verification of the changes in cultivated areas using data from the three different acquisition dates was possible; (3) the water bodies, degraded lands, urban areas, and fallow fields were frequently mistaken by cultivated soils; and (4) the use of projected photographic transparencies furnished satisfactory results, besides reducing the time spent on the image-100 system.

Optimal preparation of the ECC ozonesonde

The ECC background current was identified as the removal of residual tri-iodide (iodine) as the cell approaches equilibrium. The altitude dependence of this source of the background current is expected to be only slowly changed in the troposphere with a more rapid decrease in the stratosphere. Oxygen does not play a role in the background current except in the unlikely situation where the electrodes have had all forms of iodine removed from them and the electrodes have not re-equilibrated with the sonde solutions before use. A solution mass transport parameter in the ECC was identified and its altitude dependence determined. The mass transport of tri-iodide dominates in the chemical transduction of ozone to electrical signal. The effect of the mass transport on the ECC background current is predicted. An electrochemical model of the ECC has been developed to predict the response of the ECC to various ozone vertical profiles. The model corresponds very closely to the performance of the ECC in the laboratory. Based on this model, an ECC with no background current is predicted to give total ozone values within 1% of the correct value, although the vertical profile may be in error by as much as + or - 15%.

Preparation, characterization, physical testing and performance of fluorocarbon membranes and separators

The direct fluorination method of converting carefully selected hydrocarbon substrates to fluorinated membranes was successfully applied to produce promising, novel membranes for electrochemical devices. A family of polymer blends was identified which permits wide latitude in the concentration of both crosslinks and carboxyl groups in hydrocarbon membranes. These membranes were successfully fluorinated and are potentially competitive with commercial membranes in performance, and potentially much cheaper in price.

Polyaryl ethers and related polysiloxane copolymer molecular coatings preparation and radiation degrdation

Poly(arylene ether sulfones) comprise a class of materials known as engineering thermoplastics which have a variety of important applications. These polymers are tough, rigid materials with good mechanical properties over a wide temperature range, and they are processed by conventional methods into products typically having excellent hydrolytic, thermal, oxidative and dimensional stability. Wholly aromatic random copolymers of hydroquinone and biphenol with 4.4 prime dichlorodiphenyl sulfone were synthesized via mechanical nucleophilic displacement. Their structures were characterized and mechanical behavior studied. These tough, ductile copolymers show excellent radiation resistance to electron beam treatment and retain much of the mechanical properties up to at least 700 Mrads under argon.

The reusable Space Shuttle Main Engine prepares for long life

Attention is given to Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) life extension and logistical systems that support launch and ground operations. The operations and maintenance tasks involved in this aspect of SSME development include turnaround requirements, ground support equipment, and control documentation. A discussion is presented on the spare parts provisioning system, which emphasizes the source of decision-making data and encompasses the hardware tracking system, usage data from ground testing and launch operations, and current and projected life limits. The life extension test program leads the launch program, offering comfortable life limit margins. Planned overhauls for the extension of useful hardware life beyond the 55-mission requirement, a turnabout improvement program, and a continuous training program contribute to launch cost reductions, reliable operations, and long life.

The status of analytical preparation for 2-dimensional testing at high transonic speeds in the University of Southampton transonic self-streamlining wind tunnel

Validation data from the Transonic Self-Streamlining Wind Tunnel has proved the feasibility of streamlining two dimensional flexible walls at low speeds and up to transonic speeds, the upper limit being the speed where the flexible walls are just supercritical. At this condition, breakdown of the wall setting strategy is evident in that convergence is neither as rapid nor as stable as for lower speeds, and wall streamlining criteria are not always completely satisfied. The only major step necessary to permit the extension of two dimensional testing into higher transonic speeds is the provision of a rapid algorithm to solve for mixed flow in the imagery flow fields. The status of two dimensional high transonic testing in the Transonic Self-Streamlining Wind Tunnel is outlined and, in particular, the progress of adapting an algorithm, which solves the Transonic Small Perturbation Equation, for predicting the imagery flow fields is detailed.

ESCHER: An interactive mesh-generating editor for preparing finite-element input

ESCHER is an interactive mesh generation and editing program designed to help the user create a finite-element mesh, create additional input for finite-element analysis, including initial conditions, boundary conditions, and slidelines, and generate a NEUTRAL FILE that can be postprocessed for input into several finite-element codes, including ADINA, ADINAT, DYNA, NIKE, TSAAS, and ABUQUS. Two important ESCHER capabilities, interactive geometry creation and mesh archival storge are described in detail. Also described is the interactive command language and the use of interactive graphics. The archival storage and restart file is a modular, entity-based mesh data file. Modules of this file correspond to separate editing modes in the mesh editor, with data definition syntax preserved between the interactive commands and the archival storage file. Because ESCHER was expected to be highly interactive, extensive user documentation was provided in the form of an interactive HELP package.

High-quality Silicon Films Prepared by Zone-melting Recrystallization

The graphite strip heater zone melting recrystallization (ZMR) technique is described. The material properties of the ZMR films, and SOI device results are reviewed. Although our ZMR work is primarily motivated by integrated circuit applications, this work evolved in part from earlier research on laser crystallization of thick amorphous GaAs and Si films, which was undertaken with the goal of producing low cost photovoltaic materials. The ZMR growth process and its effect on the properties of the recrystallized films may contribute some insight to a general understanding of the rapid recrystallization of Si for solar cells. Adaptation of ZMR for solar cell fabrication is considered.

Glass heating panels and method for preparing the same from architectural reflective glass

Electrodes are positioned in intimate contact with an outer surface of a thin electrically insulating protecting layer of architectural reflective glass. Application of a voltage of sufficient magnitude substantially destroys the insulating layer located beneath the electrodes. A subsequent application of voltage results in a passage of current through the underlying thin, light reflective metal or metal oxide layer and in concomitant output of heat.

Silicon carbide-silicon nitride fibers: Preparation and characterization of polycarbosilazane precursors

This study examines the effect of modifications of the chemical structure of the monomers on the properties of the polymeric precursor and and ceramic fibers. A group of silaneamines, R'-Si (NH-R) sub 3, taken from the series where R' is methyl or phenyl and R is n-propyl, n-butyl, phenyl or allyl, are converted to polycarbosilazanes by heating in excess of 500 C. Resins obtained from this polymerization are characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy and GPC. Each resin is tested for fiber-forming properties. Resin samples and fibers are hydrolytically cured. Thermogravimetric analyses are conducted on the cured resins to compare the relative thermal stability and examine the pyrolysis process. Cured fibers are tested for tensil strength.

Alternative Food Preservation Techniques, New Technology in Food Preparation and Appropriateness of Food Supply for the Permanently Manned Space Station

Alternative food preservation techniques are defined as unique processes and combinations of currently used processes for food preservation. Food preservation is the extension of the useful shelf-life of normally perishable foods (from harvest to final consumption) by controlling micro-organisms, enzymes, chemical changes, changes in sensory characteristics and the prevention of subsequent recontamination. The resulting products must comply with all applicable food manufacturing practice regulations and be safe. Most of the foods currently used in both space and military feeding are stabilized either by dehydration or the use of a terminal sterilization process. Other available options would be formulation to reduce water activity, the refrigeration and freezing of perishable foods, chemical addition, and physical treatment (ionizing or nonionizing radiation or mechanical action). These alternatives are considered and proposals made.
