Differentially Private Map Matching (DPMM) v1.0

Human mobility trajectories provide valuable information for developing mobility applications, as they contain diverse and rich information about the users. User mobility data is valuable for various applications such as intelligent transportation systems (ITS), commercial business models, and disease-spread models. However, such spatio-temporal traces may pose a threat to user privacy. GPS trajectories in their raw form are not suitable for transportation studies, as they require matching locations with nearest road links — a process called map-matching. This software implements a differential privacy (DP)-based map-matching algorithm, called DPMM, that generates link-level location trajectories in a privacy-preserving manner to protect users' origin destinations (OD) and travel paths. OD privacy is achieved by injecting Planar Laplace noise to the user OD GPS points. Travel-path privacy is provided with randomized travel path construction using exponential DP mechanism. The injected noise level is selected adaptively, by considering the link density of the location and the functional category of the localized links. For path privacy, our mechanism samples waypoints and selects candidate paths between waypoints. DPMM provides privacy effectively with respect to link density instead of other trajectory samples in the database compared to other privacy mechanisms. Compared to the different baseline models our DP-based privacy model offers closer query responses to the raw data in terms of individual and aggregate trajectory-level statistics with an average at absolute deviation from the baseline for individual statistics on ϵ = 1.0. Beyond individual trajectory statistics, the DPMM outperforms the other benchmark DP-based mechanisms on different aggregate statistics with up to 8x improvement in utility.

UMap: An application-oriented user level memory mapping library

Exploiting the prominent role of complex memories in exascale node architecture, the UMap page fault handler offers new capabilities to access large memory-mapped data sets directly. UMap provides flexible configuration options to customize page handling to each application, including analysis of massive observational and simulation data sets. The high-performance design features I/O decoupling, dynamic load balancing, and application-level controls. Page faults triggered by application threads and processes accessing data mapped to a UMapp’ed region are handled via the Linux userfaultfd protocol, an asynchronous message-oriented kernel-user communication mechanism that avoids the context switch penalty of traditional signal fault handlers. UMap is fully open source. In this paper, we give an overview of the UMap library architecture, its extensible plugin architecture, and the use/performance of UMap in emerging heterogeneous memory hierarchies such as near-node Non-volatile Memory (NVM) and network attached memories. We highlight new capabilities in two pagefault management plugins, the NetworkStore and SparseStore. We demonstrate the integration between UMap and multiple ECP products including Caliper, Metall, ZFP, Mochi, and Ripples.

Inversion of downhole electrical measurements for proppant mapping using very fast simulated annealing

Proppant mapping is critical for optimizing fracture treatment design and improving wells’ productivity. An electrode-based resistivity tool concept was developed earlier for proppant mapping in cased-hole wells. An array of insulating gaps is installed and cemented in place as a permanent part of the casing string. The electrical measurements are performed by imposing a voltage across each insulating gap, one at a time, before and after hydraulic fracture operations. The voltages across other insulating gaps near the transmitter gap are recorded. The method relies on direct excitation of the casing, which is expected to overcome the severe limitations of induction tools in cased-hole wells. A forward model based on a finite volume method has been developed to simulate the tool’s response to one or multiple fractures. To enable the implementation of such a practical system in multistage fractured horizontal wells, a fast and robust inversion approach is required. To that end, we have developed a divide-and-conquer approach based on a global optimization algorithm very fast simulated annealing (VFSA). Specifically, the original inverse problem is divided into subproblems and each subproblem can be solved separately using VFSA. The results indicate that our approach can invert the data and output widths and radii of multiple fractures without requiring a large number of forward simulations. The robustness of the inverse solver is also tested by adding Gaussian noise to the synthetic data. We tested example cases that demonstrate that when up to 5% noise is introduced, VFSA still provides very accurate inversion results with moderate uncertainties. Inversion results with some more realistic conditions, e.g., tilted fractures, complex fractures, and so on, are also presented.

Integrating collapsible plasmonic gaps on near-field probes for polarization-resolved mapping of plasmon-enhanced emission in 2D material

Scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) is an important technique used to study the optical properties of material systems at the nanoscale. In previous work, we reported on the use of nanoimprinting to improve the reproducibility and throughput of near-field probes including complicated optical antenna structures such as the ‘campanile’ probe. However, precise control over the plasmonic gap size, which determines the near-field enhancement and spatial resolution, remains a challenge. Here, we present a novel approach to fabricating a sub-20 nm plasmonic gap in a near-field plasmonic probe through the controlled collapse of imprinted nanostructures using atomic layer deposition (ALD) coatings to define the gap width. The resulting ultranarrow gap at the apex of the probe provides a strong polarization-sensitive near-field optical response, which results in an enhancement of the optical transmission in a broad wavelength range from 620 to 820 nm, enabling tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL) mapping of 2-dimensional (2D) materials. We demonstrate the potential of this near-field probe by mapping a 2D exciton coupled to a linearly polarized plasmonic resonance with below 30 nm spatial resolution. This work proposes a novel approach for integrating a plasmonic antenna at the apex of the near-field probe, paving the way for the fundamental study of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale.

High-resolution mapping of phase-matching conditions in second-order nonlinear crystals

We demonstrate the spatial mapping of phase-matching conditions in nonlinear crystals using detuned second-harmonic generation. A beam-stabilization system cancels out the angular wobbling of the translation stages that scan the crystal under test in front of the static probe beam at the fundamental frequency. A submillimeter resolution over the full scanned aperture, 50 × 50 mm 2 , is demonstrated. The mapping of several partially deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) crystals reveals the spatially nonuniform phase-matching conditions due to internal variations in crystal properties and high-frequency surface variations.

Improved high-resolution mapping of phase-matching conditions in second-order nonlinear crystals via imaging

Large-aperture nonlinear crystals for frequency conversion and parametric amplification exhibit spatial variations in phase-matching conditions, which affect the performance of high-power laser systems. We demonstrate significant improvements in speed and resolution to a technique that spatially maps these phase-matching conditions using imaging of the beam resulting from detuned second-harmonic generation. The phase-matching conditions at the pyramidal sector boundary of partially deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) are mapped with sub-0.1-mm resolution. We examine the effect of further increases in scan rate on the precision of the technique and demonstrate a scan rate of 0.8 cm 2 per minute at the aforementioned resolution.

Nanomechanical mapping and strain rate sensitivity of microcrystalline cellulose

Nanoindentation provides a convenient and high-throughput means for mapping mechanical properties and for measuring the strain rate sensitivity of a material. Here, nanoindentation was applied to the study of microcrystalline cellulose. Here, constant strain rate nanoindentation revealed a depth dependence of nanohardness and modulus, mostly attributed to material densification. Nanomechanical maps of storage modulus and hardness resolved the shape and size of voids present in larger particles. In smaller, denser particles, however, where storage modulus varied little spatially, there was still some spatial dependence of hardness, which can be explained by cellulose’s structural anisotropy. Additionally, hardness changed with the indentation strain rate in strain rate jump tests. The resulting strain rate sensitivity values were found to be in agreement with those obtained by other techniques in the literature.

Twistor space origins of the Newman-Penrose map

Recently, we introduced the “Newman-Penrose map”, a novel correspondence between a certain class of solutions of Einstein’s equations and self-dual solutions of the vacuum Maxwell equations, which we showed was closely related to the classical double copy. Here, we give an alternative definition of this correspondence in terms of quantities that are defined naturally on twistor space, and a shear-free null geodesic congruence on Minkowski space whose twistorial character is articulated by the Kerr theorem. The advantage of this reformulation is that it is purely geometrical in nature, being manifestly invariant under both spacetime diffeomorphisms and projective transformations on twistor space. While the original formulation of the map may be more convenient for most explicit calculations, the twistorial formulation we present here may be of greater theoretical utility.

Radiation Mapping UAV [Poster]

The NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) target system delivers a high-energy flux of muon-neutrinos towards a detector more than 800 km away with the goal of better understanding the origin of the universe and its evolution. The target system becomes radioactive because it is irradiated by a sub-Mega-Watt power proton beam. Radiological hazard is one of critical issues for a radiological worker which limits the iractivities near the target system; however, they often need to quantify the radiation level of the target system manually. Thus, the objective of this project is to reduce their exposure to radiation while improving the accuracy of the measurements. A quadcopter UAV fitted with a radiation dosimeter is ideal to traverse the irradiated environment as it can be deployed in any space and requires minimal hardware integration to the test room. Due to the lack of indoor GPS signal, this UAV utilizes a series of ultrasonic beacons that release several varied-frequency pulses simultaneously in order to localize the drone. The flight controller returns a 3D coordinate tied to the radiation data to understand precisely where radiation spikes are being emitted from the horn. The flight controller stores log data that can be processed into an easily interpretable map of radiation intensities. The radiation map serves as one of the primary references for planning the transportation of the NuMI horn.

Collaborative Research: Large Scale Intensity Mapping of Neutral Hydrogen with the Tianlai Pathfinders

This program developed new analysis methods for current and upcoming cosmological hydrogen 21cm intensity mapping data from the Tianlai experiment, located in a radio quiet area of Western China. Such mapping provides important clues to the evolution of gas and galaxies in the early universe. The experiment measured the three-dimensional large-scale structure of the universe via hydrogen emission from distant galaxies. The primary goal was to develop ways to handle the large foreground signal, which has been previously quantified in a pathfinder 21cm program conducted on NSF's Green Bank Telescope.

Sensitive Botanical Resources Surveys and Vegetation Mapping for the LLNL Sitewide Environmental Impact Statement, Arroyo Mocho, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Alameda County, California

At the request of Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), Nomad Ecology (Nomad) conducted sensitive botanical resource surveys, and vegetation mapping and classification of the 17 acres surrounding the Arroyo Mocho pumping station and the access road to the pumping station (Arroyo Mocho). The results of these efforts will provide supporting information for a Site-wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS). These surveys were conducted during the months of April and May 2020, and March 2021. A total of three special status plant species were recorded within Arroyo Mocho. All three species – Hospital Canyon larkspur (Delphinium californicum subsp. interius), Jepson’s woolly sunflower (Eriophyllum jepsonii), and Michael’s rein orchid (Piperia michaelii) – were not previously recorded within the study area at Arroyo Mocho. Special status plant species known from the study area total three rare plant occurrences (populations4), which represent an estimated 50 rare plant individuals. This total of all special status plant species breaks down to one occurrence of California Rare Plant Rank (CRPR) 1 & 2 species (42 individuals), and 2 occurrences of CRPR 3 & 4 species (8 individuals). A total of nine vegetation communities were mapped at Arroyo Mocho, of which two are considered Sensitive Natural Communities.

Understanding the Design Space of Sparse/Dense Multiphase Dataflows for Mapping Graph Neural Networks on Spatial Accelerators

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have garnered a lot of recent interest because of their success in learning representations from graph-structured data across several critical applications in cloud and HPC. Owing to their unique compute and memory characteristics that come from an interplay between dense and sparse phases of computations, the emergence of reconfigurable dataflow (aka spatial) accelerators offers promise for acceleration by mapping optimized dataflows (i.e., computation order and parallelism) for both phases. The goal of this work is to characterize and understand the design-space of dataflow choices for running GNNs on spatial accelerators in order for the compilers to optimize the dataflow based on the workload. Specifically, we propose a taxonomy to describe all possible choices for mapping the dense and sparse phases of GNNs spatially and temporally over a spatial accelerator, capturing both the intra-phase dataflow and the inter-phase (pipelined) dataflow. Using this taxonomy, we do deep-dives into the cost and benefits of several dataflows and perform case studies on implications of hardware parameters for dataflows and value of flexibility to support pipelined execution.
