Finite-volume pionless effective field theory for few-nucleon systems with differentiable programming

Finite-volume pionless effective field theory provides an efficient framework for the extrapolation of nuclear spectra and matrix elements calculated at finite volume in lattice QCD to infinite volume, and to nuclei with larger atomic number. In this work, it is demonstrated how this framework may be implemented via a set of correlated Gaussian wave functions optimized using differentiable programming and via solution of a generalized eigenvalue problem. This approach is shown to be significantly more efficient than a stochastic implementation of the variational method based on the same form of correlated Gaussian wave functions, yielding comparably accurate representations of the ground-state wave functions with an order of magnitude fewer terms. The efficiency of representation allows such calculations to be extended to larger systems than in previous work. Further, the method is demonstrated through calculations of the binding energies of nuclei with atomic number A ϵ {2,3,4} in finite volume, matched to lattice QCD calculations at quark masses corresponding to m π = 806 MeV, and infinite-volume effective field theory calculations of A ϵ {2,3,4,5,6} systems based on this matching.

Analytic evaluation of the weighting functions for remote sensing of blackbody planetary atmospheres : the case of limb viewing geometry

In a recent publication (Ustinov, 2002), we proposed an analytic approach to evaluation of radiative and geophysical weighting functions for remote sensing of a blackbody planetary atmosphere, based on general linearization approach applied to the case of nadir viewing geometry. In this presentation, the general linearization approach is applied to the limb viewing geometry. The expressions, similar to those obtained in (Ustinov, 2002), are obtained for weighting functions with respect to the distance along the line of sight. Further on, these expressions are converted to the expressions for weighting functions with respect to the vertical coordinate in the atmosphere. Finally, the numerical representation of weighting functions in the form of matrices of partial derivatives of grid limb radiances with respect to the grid values of atmospheric parameters is used for a convolution with the finite field of view of the instrument.

Click-chemistry compatible structures, click-chemistry functionalized structures, and materials and methods for making the same

According to various embodiments, systems, methods, and computer program products for click-chemistry compatible structures, additive manufacturing resins for forming the same, and method of formation of such structures and resins, as well as techniques for functionalizing click-chemistry compatible structures are disclosed. The inventive structures generally include a plurality of photo polymerized molecules structurally arranged according to a three-dimensional pattern, while surfaces of the structure are functionalized with one or more click-chemistry compatible molecules each having one or more click-chemistry compatible functional groups. The structures may be formed from single- or dual-component resins, each having unique synthetic pathways. The resulting structures may be functionalized for utility in a wide range of applications by leveraging click chemistry to further functionalize the structure with organic additives also compatible with click-chemistry reaction schemes.

Expansion series of integral functions occurring in unsteady aerodynamics

Attention is given to two real integral functions which occur in the kernel of singular integral equations for subsonic unsteady lifting surfaces. The arguments k, r, and X of the functions correspond to the reduced frequency, spanwise distance, and modified coordinate in the flow direction, respectively. The value of the parameter nu in the functions depends on geometrical conditions. The considered investigation has the objective to present a series for general values of the nonnegative integer nu in order to compute efficiently the integral functions. The approach makes it possible to avoid any approximation or numerical quadrature.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease among former United States Department of Energy workers: comorbidities and lung function changes

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States and is frequently associated with multiple comorbidities which lead to poor COPD outcomes in the general population. However, little is known regarding COPD comorbidities in occupational cohorts whose exposure experiences could result in differences in comorbidities compared to the general population. These differences may also be important for assessing COPD outcomes such as lung function changes or decline. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to: (1) identify and describe clusters of COPD comorbidities among Department of Energy (DOE) former workers; (2) assess if the attributes of the identified clusters differ from those identified among the general population based on the published literature, and (3) identify predictors of lung function changes and decline among DOE former workers.

Architectural options and development issues

The design options for the space station are discussed in general terms, reflecting the approach taken by the NASA Concept Development Group. Primary aims are flexibility and transparency, to fulfill as many scientific and commercial user requirements as possible and to open the station to as many new users as possible; utilities, facilities, and functional support must be designed to meet these aims. General architecture options considered include the present STS, an extended STS, a limited-duration manned transportation node with unmanned platforms, and a manned station with unmanned platforms and transportation-node capability (OTV, TMS). The latter option is found most promising and developed further, with consideration of the technical challenges involved.

Identification of recG genetic interactions in Escherichia coli by transposon sequencing

ABSTRACT Maintaining the integrity of the genome is of utmost importance for cell division and propagation. In Escherichia coli , the RecG protein has been implicated in processing branched recombination intermediates during DNA repair processes, but the primary cellular role(s) of RecG and the repair pathways in which it acts have been difficult to define. To gain additional insight into RecG function, we employed transposon sequencing to identify recG genetic interactions and reveal complementary or redundant functions. The strongest hits from the screen were the dam , uvrD , rnhA , radA , and rep genes. The conditional importance of these five genes in cells lacking recG was confirmed using a plasmid-based assay, revealing synthetic lethal interactions for most double deletion strains. Several of the synthetic lethal gene combinations (with uvrD, rep, and radA , but not rnhA or dam ) were suppressed by deletion of recF or recO , indicating that their genetic relationships involved roles in post-replication gap repair. Additionally, loss of the RecG/SSB interaction phenocopied a recG deletion when combined with dam , uvrD , radA , or rnhA deletions but not with rep . The results reinforce the idea of RecG as a general genome guardian. RecG has at least two functions. It plays an important role in the resolution of joint molecules behind the fork, formed during post-replication gap repair. RecG is also required to suppress genome over-replication caused by unscheduled replication initiation at R-loops, at double-strand breaks caused by dam inactivation, and during replication termination. IMPORTANCE DNA damage and subsequent DNA repair processes are mutagenic in nature and an important driver of evolution in prokaryotes, including antibiotic resistance development. Genetic screening approaches, such as transposon sequencing (Tn-seq), have provided important new insights into gene function and genetic relationships. Here, we employed Tn-seq to gain insight into the function of the recG gene, which renders Escherichia coli cells moderately sensitive to a variety of DNA-damaging agents when they are absent. The reported recG genetic interactions can be used in combination with future screens to aid in a more complete reconstruction of DNA repair pathways in bacteria.

Deep potential generation scheme and simulation protocol for the Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 -type superionic conductors

We report solid-state electrolyte materials with superior lithium ionic conductivities are vital to the next-generation Li-ion batteries. Molecular dynamics could provide atomic scale information to understand the diffusion process of Li-ion in these superionic conductor materials. Here, we implement the deep potential generator to set up an efficient protocol to automatically generate interatomic potentials for Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 -type solid-state electrolyte materials (Li 10 GeP 2 S 12 , Li 10 SiP 2 S 12 , and Li 10 SnP 2 S 12 ). The reliability and accuracy of the fast interatomic potentials are validated. With the potentials, we extend the simulation of the diffusion process to a wide temperature range (300 K–1000 K) and systems with large size (~1000 atoms). Important technical aspects such as the statistical error and size effect are carefully investigated, and benchmark tests including the effect of density functional, thermal expansion, and configurational disorder are performed. The computed data that consider these factors agree well with the experimental results, and we find that the three structures show different behaviors with respect to configurational disorder. Our work paves the way for further research on computation screening of solid-state electrolyte materials.

Computations involving differential operators and their actions on functions

The algorithms derived by Grossmann and Larson (1989) are further developed for rewriting expressions involving differential operators. The differential operators involved arise in the local analysis of nonlinear dynamical systems. These algorithms are extended in two different directions: the algorithms are generalized so that they apply to differential operators on groups and the data structures and algorithms are developed to compute symbolically the action of differential operators on functions. Both of these generalizations are needed for applications.

IMG Annotation Pipeline (IMGAP) v5.1.13

The IMG Annotation Pipeline is a collection of Bash and Python scripts to control a workflow for structural and functional annotation of prokaryotic genomes, metagenomes, and metatranscriptomes. The bash scripts in general control the overall workflow and are wrappers around 3rd party executables (not included in repo) that predict features or functions. Whereas the Python scripts do post-processing of raw output in terms of filtering or format transformation and in some cases contain some logic for picking the correct predictions or resolving overlaps. The pipeline is tailored to produce results required by IMG (https://img.jgi.doe.gov/) and is executed on every dataset submitted to IMG via https://img.jgi.doe.gov/submit. These consist of internal genomes, metagenomes and metatranscriptomes sequenced and assembled at the JGI, as well as datasets submitted by external users (non-lab/JGI affiliates).

User Guide to the Advanced Dimensional Depletion for Engineering of Reactors (ADDER) Software (V.1.0)

The Advanced Dimensional Depletion for Engineering of Reactors (ADDER) software is being developed in the Research and Test Reactor (RTR) Program at Argonne National Laboratory to meet the reactor design and analysis needs of the Conversion Program. ADDER is a flexible tool that (1) provides a depletion capability through coupling external neutronics codes with a built-in CRAM solver or external depletion code and (2) provides a user-friendly interface to perform fuel management and criticality search operations. The ADDER software is a Python 3 application written using modern software development practices subject to a compliant implementation of NQA-1 and applicable Department of Energy software quality assurance standards. This report is the user guide for the initial software release as ADDER v1.0.0. The motivation for a software to have flexible capabilities that ADDER possesses is the need to support a wide variety of geometries that are commonly required in analysis of research and test reactors. These reactors can have complex fuel, experiment, or control material shuffling patterns that persist over several years with many fuel management and partial refueling intervals. The scale of fuel management analysis can require tracking of an inventory that is multiple times the core loading. Many reactors, both power and non-power reactors of various types, will find the features of ADDER useful to facilitate key tasks that a fuel or core design engineer must perform with the convenience of concise input and validated functionality.

Axiomatic Design Based Analysis and Equivalent Mass Comparison of Alternate Air Revitalization Systems

A proposed Photocatalytic Air Processor (PAP) would combine two atmosphere revitalization functions for a crewed spacecraft, carbon dioxide removal and oxygen provision. The axiomatic design method is used to develop the general requirements and alternate system designs that combine these two atmosphere revitalization functions. There are two current atmosphere revitalization approaches. Short missions such as the space shuttle use lithium hydroxide (LiOH) to remove carbon dioxide and tanks to provide oxygen. The ISS (International Space Station) uses the CDRA (Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly) to remove carbon dioxide and a Sabatier reactor and OGA (Oxygen Generation Assembly) to provide oxygen. The PAP could replace either of these combined systems, LiOH and oxygen tanks or the CDRA, Sabatier, and OGA. Axiomatic design is used to investigate these alternate high level system designs for atmosphere revitalization. The axiomatic design approach develops the requirements and design together from higher to lower system level, using a back-and-forth and top-down process. One objective is to reduce the coupling between design elements, which is a measure of system complexity. The equivalent system mass of the alternate systems is compared.

Tailoring the Electronic Structures and Spectral Properties of ZnO with Irradiation Defects Generated Under Intense Electronic Excitation: A Combined Experimental and DFT Approach

Here, the relationship between the composition of the internal defect states, spectral properties, and correlated electronic structures of wurtzite zinc oxide (ZnO) crystals under 645 MeV Xe 35+ irradiation is systematically investigated, employing experimental characterizations combined with first-principle calculations. Based on the ion irradiation-induced thermal expansion and relaxation processes, the high concentration of vacancy/interstitial defects produced from the transient disordered phase in molten track states trigger photoelectric changes, as follows: i) the generation of internal defect states effectively reduces the intrinsic bandgap (3.25 eV → 2.66 eV); ii) a large number of defective active sites inhibits the recombination between electron–hole pairs, causing dark conductance and photoconductance to increase with increasing damage levels until optimal fluence is achieved. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) with the GGA + U (GGA = generalized gradient approximation) method, the defective models associated with the different electronic structures, density of states, formation energy, and the nature of the chemical bonding are established. The narrowing of the bandgap observed experimentally and the enhancement of carrier concentration originating from the internal electron defect states are qualitatively verified, therefore laying the foundation for designing future nanoscale photoelectronic devices and microelectronics applications.

Geoid undulations and gravity anomalies over the Aral Sea, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea from a combined GEOS-3/SEASAT/GEOSAT altimeter data set

Satellite-based altimetric data taken by GOES-3, SEASAT, and GEOSAT over the Aral Sea, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea are analyzed and a least squares collocation technique is used to predict the geoid undulations on a 0.25x0.25 deg. grid and to transform these geoid undulations to free air gravity anomalies. Rapp's 180x180 geopotential model is used as the reference surface for the collocation procedure. The result of geoid to gravity transformation is, however, sensitive to the information content of the reference geopotential model used. For example, considerable detailed surface gravity data were incorporated into the reference model over the Black Sea, resulting in a reference model with significant information content at short wavelengths. Thus, estimation of short wavelength gravity anomalies from gridded geoid heights is generally reliable over regions such as the Black Sea, using the conventional collocation technique with local empirical covariance functions. Over regions such as the Caspian Sea, where detailed surface data are generally not incorporated into the reference model, unconventional techniques are needed to obtain reliable gravity anomalies. Based on the predicted gravity anomalies over these inland seas, speculative tectonic structures are identified and geophysical processes are inferred.

Heating measurements on Space Shuttle Orbiter models with differentially deflected elevons

The phase-change paint technique was used to make heat-transfer measurements on five Space Shuttle Orbiter models with differentially-deflected elevons. The outboard elevons were deflected windward through an angle delta when the inboard elevons were deflected through an angle - 2delta, where delta = 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 deg. The models were tested in air at Mach 6 and Mach 10 with two different flow conditions at each Mach number. Each test was run at three angles of attack; 20, 28, and 35 deg. This study was restricted to the windward side of the wing/elevons area. Multiple chord-wise streaks of high heating often occurred on the wings and sometimes extended to localized spots of high heating on the windward-deflected elevons. The extent of heating was a function of angle of attack and test conditions, but in general differential deflection of the elevons affected the wing heat-transfer coefficient on the order of 40 percent or less whereas the windward elevon heat-transfer coefficient was a function of the deflection angle and could be many times the value determined for the undeflected elevon.

Locomotor Dysfunction after Spaceflight: Characterization and Countermeasure Development

Astronauts returning from space flight show disturbances in locomotor control manifested by changes in various sub-systems including head-trunk coordination, dynamic visual acuity, lower limb muscle activation patterning and kinematics (Glasauer, et al., 1995; Bloomberg, et al., 1997; McDonald, et al., 1996; 1997; Layne, et al., 1997; 1998, 2001, 2004; Newman, et al., 1997; Bloomberg and Mulavara, 2003). These post flight changes in locomotor performance, due to neural adaptation to the microgravity conditions of space flight, affect the ability of crewmembers especially after a long duration mission to egress their vehicle and perform extravehicular activities soon after landing on Earth or following a landing on the surface of the Moon or Mars. At present, no operational training intervention is available pre- or in- flight to mitigate post flight locomotor disturbances. Our laboratory is currently developing a gait adaptability training program that is designed to facilitate recovery of locomotor function following a return to a gravitational environment. The training program exploits the ability of the sensorimotor system to generalize from exposure to multiple adaptive challenges during training so that the gait control system essentially "learns to learn" and therefore can reorganize more rapidly when faced with a novel adaptive challenge. Ultimately, the functional goal of an adaptive generalization countermeasure is not necessarily to immediately return movement patterns back to "normal". Rather the training regimen should facilitate the reorganization of available sensorimotor sub-systems to achieve safe and effective locomotion as soon as possible after space flight. We have previously confirmed that subjects participating in adaptive generalization training programs, using a variety of visuomotor distortions and different motor tasks from throwing to negotiating an obstacle course as the dependent measure, can learn to enhance their ability to adapt to a novel sensorimotor environment (Roller et al., 2001; Cohen et al. 2005). Importantly, this increased adaptability is retained even one month after completion of the training period. Our laboratory is currently developing adaptive generalization training procedures and the associated flight hardware to implement such a training program, using variations of visual flow, subject loading, and treadmill speed; during regular in-flight treadmill operations.

Ab Initio Transport Calculations: From Normal to Superconducting Current

Applying the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations with density-functional theory, it is possible to formulate first principles description of current-phase relationships in superconducting/normal (magnetic)/superconducting tri-layers. Such structures are the basis for the superconducting analog of Magnetoresistive random access memory devices (JMRAM). In a recent paper1 we presented results from the first attempt to formulate such a theory, applied to the Nb/Ni/Nb trilayers. In the present work we provide computational details, explaining how to construct key ingredient (scattering matrices SN ) in a framework of linear muffin-tin orbitals (LMTO).
