Boundary integral techniques for multi-connected domains

Attention is given to iterative methods applicable to such changing domain cases of elliptic problems in multiconnected domains as those of incompressible inviscid flow with free surfaces. One such formulation is developed and tested on circular and elliptic annuli, using interpolated quadrature points to maintain accuracy when annuli regions are thin. The technique is noted to be applicable to the study of accelerating thin fluid shells.

Filament eruption connected to protospheric activity

Two cases of activation of filaments that occured in regions of intense magnetic activity was studied. The simultaneous observations from Debrecen Observatory (white light and H alpha filtergram), and from Meudon Observatory (magnetogram, MSDP dopplergram and intensity maps in H alpha) gave a complementary set of data from which can be produced evidence of the influence of the photospheric magnetic field on the destabilization process of the filaments. On June 22, 1980, the eruption of the filament is associated with the motion of pores, which are manifestations of emerging flux knots. On September 3, 1980, the twisting motions in the filament are associated to the birth of a pore in its neighborhood. These observations are discussed.

Exploration of the solar-stellar connection at high spectral resolution with the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter, and studies of thermal bifurcation at the photosphere-chromosphere interface

The dynamics of high-excitation plasma in the 100,000 K transition zones of stars of late spectral type, as observed with the International Ultraviolet Explorer, was compared with the radial gas velocities of individual structural features of the solar TZ, as observed with high spatial resolution by the UVSP on the Solar Maximum Mission. The 4th-positive system of carbon monoxide in the quiet sun and in active regions was studied in order to explore the properties of thermal inhomogeneities at the critical interface between the photosphere and chromosphere.

Magnetic connection for Saturn's rings and atmosphere

Latitudinal variations in images of Saturn's disk, upper atmospheric temperatures, and ionospheric electron densities are found in magnetic conjugacy with features in Saturn's ring plane. It is proposed that these latitudinal variations are the result of a variable influx of water transported along magnetic field lines from sources in Saturn's ring plane. These features are thus the surface expression of an electromagnetic erosion mechanism which transports water (in the form of high charge-to-mass ratio particles) from the rings to the atmosphere.

The dynamics and control of a space platform connected to a tethered subsatellite

A mathematical model of the open and closed loop dynamics of a space tethered-platform-subsatellite system (TPS) is developed. The TPS consists of a rigid platform from which an (assumed massless) tether is deploying a subsatellite from an attachment point which is offset from the mass center of the platform. Control is provided by modulation of the tension level in the tether and by momentum-type platform-mounted devices. Control-law gains are obtained based on linear quadratic regulator techniques. Typical transient responses are presented.

Connections between conventional and singular-value-based multi-variable flight control system design techniques

It is proposed that frequency-domain multivariable robustness techniques, when combined with classical multivariable procedures, can offer an additional means of evaluating FCS designs. A lateral-directional FCS for an advanced fighter is used as an example. Robustness to unstructured aircraft-input uncertainties is assessed using purely numerical singular-value procedures. Literal approximations for the singular values of the open-loop plant and controller and for the inverse return difference are shown to provide a means of decomposing and diagnosing robustness problems that are insoluble via purely numerical methods.

On the connection between high-frequency radio and X-ray emission in quasars

Data on NRAO 140 collected over a seven year period are analyzed, and it is found that the high-frequency flux density of the most compact radio components decreased roughly in proportion to the X-ray flux. Discrepancies between the self-Compton hypothesis and observations are explored. It is suggested that the parameter (N sub 0)x remaining approximately constant in the self-Compton model could be explained by the density of relativistic electrons rising as the throat of the jet shrinks.

On the connection between mare basalts and picritic volcanic glasses

The liquid lines of descent were calculated for low-pressure equilibrium and fractional crystallization of mare basaltic liquids in order to examine the postulated link between picritic volcanic glasses and mare basalts. The models of Longhi (1977, 1982) were modified by including expressions for the armalcolite/ilmenite surface boundary and the Cr-spinel liquidus surface, average molar partition coefficients for armalcolite/liquid pairs, and new experimental data of Longhi and Pan (1987). The results indicate that, with two exceptions, mare basalts and picritic volcanic glasses are not related by simple, linear-surface crystallization processes. However, the compositions of Luna 24 ferrobasalt and Apollo 11 high-K basalts could be closely matched with the lines of liquid descent of certain green and orange picritic glasses, respectively. The calculations also show that the picritic magmas would have fractionated to produce basalts with bulk and mineral compositions similar to those of mare basalts, supporting the hypothesis that mare basalts have fractionated compositions and that the small number of observed linkages between basalts and picritic parents is a consequence of limited sampling.

Rate limits in silicon sheet growth - The connections between vertical and horizontal methods

Meniscus-defined techniques for the growth of thin silicon sheets fall into two categories: vertical and horizontal growth. The interactions of the temperature field and the crystal shape are analyzed for both methods using two-dimensional finite-element models which include heat transfer and capillarity. Heat transfer in vertical growth systems is dominated by conduction in the melt and the crystal, with almost flat melt/crystal interfaces that are perpendicular to the direction of growth. The high axial temperature gradients characteristic of vertical growth lead to high thermal stresses. The maximum growth rate is also limited by capillarity which can restrict the conduction of heat from the melt into the crystal. In horizontal growth the melt/crystal interface stretches across the surface of the melt pool many times the crystal thickness, and low growth rates are achievable with careful temperature control. With a moderate axial temperature gradient in the sheet a substantial portion of the latent heat conducts along the sheet and the surface of the melt pool becomes supercooled, leading to dendritic growth. The thermal supercooling is surpressed by lowering the axial gradient in the crystal; this configuration is the most desirable for the growth of high quality crystals. An expression derived from scaling analysis relating the growth rate and the crucible temperature is shown to be reliable for horizontal growth.

On connection between evolution of troposphere fronts and changes of circulation regime in meteor zone

The interactions between the thermobaric fields at heights from 5 to 95 km at the beginning of a winter period are considered, based on experimental radar measurements of meteor drifts obtained in Frunze in November to December 1983. During this period the high atmosphere readily responds to even slight changes in the thermal regime of the stratosphere. The interdiurnal variations of average daily values of wind u, v, U, and azimuth phi are shown.

Knowledge representation by connection matrices: A method for the on-board implementation of large expert systems

Extremely large knowledge sources and efficient knowledge access characterizing future real-life artificial intelligence applications represent crucial requirements for on-board artificial intelligence systems due to obvious computer time and storage constraints on spacecraft. A type of knowledge representation and corresponding reasoning mechanism is proposed which is particularly suited for the efficient processing of such large knowledge bases in expert systems.

The solar/interplanetary/magnetosphere/ionosphere connection - A strategy for prediction of geomagnetic storms

A physically-based strategy for the prediction of geomagnetic/ionospheric disturbances, the Solar-Terrestrial/Environmental Model (STEM 2000), is proposed, with application to the prediction of periods of spacecraft charging. Synoptic solar observations provide input for MHD models for flare occurrence, propagation of coronal disturbances, and high speed solar wind streams. A three-dimensional interplanetary MHD model determines solar wind parameters including the energy flux and the cross-magnetosphere tail electric field. Observational earth data are used to predict local time, high latitude ionospheric disturbances which have an impact on the ionospheric structure.

Weak solar fields and their connection to the solar cycle

Videomagnetograph observations of the weak solar magnetic fields are discussed. Intranetwork (IN) elements are found to emerge in bipolar form, but to flow in a random pattern rather than toward the network elements. Merging of IN fields is found to be more important than the ephemeral regions as a source of new network elements. Arguments for and against the hypothesis that all solar fields are intrinsically strong are considered. It is noted that reconnection and merging of magnetic fields take place continually under the conditions presently examined.

The Jupiter-Io connection - An Alfven engine in space

Much has been learned about the electromagnetic interaction between Jupiter and its satellite Io from in situ observations. Io, in its motion through the Io plasma torus at Jupiter, continuously generates an Alfven wing that carries two billion kilowatts of power into the jovian ionosphere. Concurrently, Io is acted upon by a J x B force tending to propel it out of the jovian system. The energy source for these processes is the rotation of Jupiter. This unusual planet-satellite coupling serves as an archetype for the interaction of a large moving conductor with a magnetized plasma, a problem of general space and astrophysical interest.

The solar system/interstellar medium connection - Gas phase abundances

Gas-phase abundances in the outer solar system are presented as diagnostics of the interstellar medium at the time of the solar system formation, some 4.55 billion years ago. Possible influences of the thermal and chemical histories of the primitive solar nebula and of the processes which led to the formation and evolution of the outer planets and comets on the elemental and molecular composition of the primordial matter are outlined. The major components of the atmospheres of the outer planets and of the comae of comets are identified, and the cosmogonical and cosmological implications are discussed.

Observations of large-amplitude MHD waves in Jupiter's foreshock in connection with a quasi-perpendicular shock structure

Plasma and magnetic field observations performed onboard the Voyager 2 spacecraft have been used to investigate Jupiter's foreshock. Large-amplitude waves have been detected in association with the quasi-perpendicular structure of the Jovian bow shock, thus proving that the upstream turbulence is not a characteristic signature of the quasi-parallel shock.
