Unconventional gas-phase preparation of the prototype polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon naphthalene (C 10 H 8 ) via the reaction of benzyl (C 7 H 7 ) and propargyl (C 3 H 3 ) radicals coupled with hydrogen-atom assisted isomerization

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous in the interstellar medium and in meteorites such as Murchison and Allende and signify the missing link between resonantly stabilized free radicals and carbonaceous nanoparticles (soot particles, interstellar grains). However, the predicted lifetime of interstellar PAHs of some 108 years imply that PAHs should not exist in extraterrestrial environments suggesting that key mechanisms of their formation are elusive. Exploiting a microchemical reactor and coupling these data with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and kinetic modeling, we reveal through an isomer selective product detection that the reaction of the resonantly stabilized benzyl (C 7 H 7 ) and the propargyl (C 3 H 3 ) synthesizes the simplest representative of PAHs – the 10π Hückel aromatic naphthalene (C 10 H 8 ) molecule – via the novel Propargyl Addition–BenzAnnulation (PABA) mechanism. The gas-phase preparation of naphthalene affords a versatile concept of the reaction of combustion and astronomically abundant propargyl radicals with aromatic radicals carrying the radical center at the methylene moiety (aromatic-CH 2 ) as a previously passed over source of aromatics in high temperature environments thus bringing us closer to an understanding of the aromatic universe we live in.

Quantifying selective solvent transport under an electric field in mixed-solvent electrolytes

Electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries comprise solvent mixtures, but analysis of ion transport is always based on treating the solvents as a single-entity. We combine electrophoretic NMR (eNMR) measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to quantify electric-field-induced transport in a concentrated solution containing LiPF 6 salt dissolved in an ethylene carbonate/ethyl methyl carbonate (EC/EMC) mixture. The selective transport of EC relative to EMC is reflected in the difference between two transference numbers, defined as the fraction of current carried by cations relative to the velocity of each solvent species. This difference arises from the preferential solvation of cations by EC and its dynamic consequences. The simulations reveal the presence of a large variety of transient solvent-containing clusters which migrate at different velocities. Rigorous averaging over different solvation environments is essential for comparing simulated and measured transference numbers. Our study emphasizes the necessity of acknowledging the presence of four species in mixed-solvent electrolytes.

Porous bipolar polymers as organic cathodes for sustainable sodium/potassium-ion batteries

Redox-active porous polymers are becoming promising organic electrode materials for alkali-ion batteries because of their tunable pore size, flexible chemical structure, and high thermal stability. This work presents various porous bipolar polymers as cathodes in Na-ion batteries (NIBs) and K-ion batteries (KIBs). Two structural units containing carbonyl and amine active centers, respectively, were introduced into the repeating units of the polymers by the polycondensation of N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (TAP) and various dianhydrides. Here, the resulting bipolar polymers undergo multi-electron redox reactions involving both cations and anions during battery charge and discharge. The impacts of extended conjugation structures and porosity on the electrochemical performances were investigated by tuning the conjugation structures in the dianhydride monomers. The bipolar polymers with extended conjugation structures and small pore size exhibit superior electrochemical performance in NIBs and KIBs in terms of high redox potentials, long cycle life, and fast-charging capability, demonstrating great promise as organic cathode materials for alkali-ion batteries.

Unconventional gas-phase synthesis of biphenyl and its atropisomeric methyl-substituted derivatives

The biphenyl molecule (C 12 H 10 ) acts as a fundamental molecular backbone in the stereoselective synthesis of organic materials due to its inherent twist angle causing atropisomerism in substituted derivatives and in molecular mass growth processes in circumstellar environments and combustion systems. Here, we reveal an unconventional low-temperature phenylethynyl addition–cyclization–aromatization mechanism for the gas-phase preparation of biphenyl (C 12 H 10 ) along with ortho-, meta-, and para-substituted methylbiphenyl (C 13 H 12 ) derivatives through crossed molecular beams and computational studies providing compelling evidence on their formation via bimolecular gas-phase reactions of phenylethynyl radicals (C 6 H 5 CC, X 2 A 1 ) with 1,3-butadiene-d 6 (C 4 D 6 ), isoprene (CH 2 C(CH 3 )CHCH 2 ), and 1,3-pentadiene (CH 2 CHCHCHCH 3 ). The dynamics involve de-facto barrierless phenylethynyl radical additions via submerged barriers followed by facile cyclization and hydrogen shift prior to hydrogen atom emission and aromatization to racemic mixtures (ortho, meta) of biphenyls in overall exoergic reactions. Furthermore, these findings not only challenge our current perception of biphenyls as high temperature markers in combustion systems and astrophysical environments, but also identify biphenyls as fundamental building blocks of complex polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as coronene (C 24 H 12 ) eventually leading to carbonaceous nanoparticles (soot, grains) in combustion systems and in deep space thus affording critical insight into the low-temperature hydrocarbon chemistry in our universe.

Conjugation effect of amine molecules in non-aqueous Mg redox flow batteries

Nonaqueous magnesium redox flow batteries (Mg RFBs) are attractive for low-cost, high-energy-density and long-cycle-life stationary energy storage applications. However, state-of-the-art cathode redox-active molecules suffer from low solubility and low redox potential. Herein, we screened a range of cathode redox-active molecules and identified amine molecules as optimal to couple with the Mg anode. The properties of amine derivatives and their performances were collected to establish the correlation between molecular structures and electrochemical performances. The redox potential and solubility of these amine molecules were influenced by the π-conjugated and non-conjugated structures of amine derivatives. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations and the inverse aromatic fluctuation index (FLU −1 ) verified that conjugation had an important role in stabilizing the molecule and increasing its redox potential. Notably, tris[4-(diethylamino)phenyl]amine (TDPA) achieved the highest theoretical energy density (∼120 Wh L −1 ) due to its high solubility (∼0.9 M) and voltage (∼2.5 V vs. Mg/Mg 2+ ). We also demonstrated that ether solvents were crucial for stable, high-solubility catholytes, while bulk anions did not affect the redox potential of these p-type molecules. In a Mg-amine RFB configuration, the battery delivered 2.50 V, a specific discharge capacity of 106.5 mAh g −1 , an initial coulombic efficiency of 90.74%, and a capacity retention of 93.88% after 150 cycles.

Gas-phase synthesis of naphthalene through an unconventional thermal alkyne–alkene [2 + 2] cycloaddition mechanism

Exotic cycloaddition entrance channels were discovered for the bimolecular gas-phase reactions of the phenylethynyl radical (C 6 H 5 CC, X 2 A 1 ) with ethylene-d 4 (C 2 D 4 ) and propylene (C 3 H 6 ) as explored under single-collision conditions utilizing the crossed molecular beams technique combined with electronic structure and statistical calculations. Connecting the concepts of barrierless entrance channels, excited states, and facile non-photochemically activated cycloadditions, the reaction pathway features an unconventional thermal [2 + 2] cycloaddition forming a four-membered ring collision complex followed by multiple isomerizations prior to unimolecular decomposition via atomic hydrogen loss to (un)substituted naphthalenes—naphthalene-d 4 (C 10 H 4 D 4 ) and 1-/2-methylnaphthalene (C 11 H 10 ). The small energy gap between the singly-occupied a 1 highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with a σ-character and the underlying doubly-occupied b 1 molecular orbital with a π-character allows a facile promotion of an electron. This in turn enables a versatile low-temperature reactivity of phenylethynyl, where the end-on and side-on barrierless approaches of ethylene are due to its interaction with the σ and π orbitals, respectively, thus suggesting this mechanism as a possible method for tuning substituents in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) formation and highlighting its versatility as a probe of fundamental carbon chemistry via counterintuitive cycloaddition reactions under single-collision conditions.

Molecular origin of negative lithium transference in electrolytes with star-shaped multivalent anions

Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations illustrate that highly correlated cation–anion motion leads to negative t 0+ on the order of 1 in lithium electrolytes with star-shaped multivalent anions. Large multivalent anions have gained increasing attention for their potential to improve lithium transference in electrolytes. We employ large-scale molecular dynamics simulations based on the Onsager transport framework to investigate ion transport in a lithium electrolyte with star-shaped multivalent anions. The simulations show that t 0+, the cation transference number with respect to solvent velocity, is negative over a wide range of concentration. This is consistent with experimental data reported previously. The simulation-based Onsager transport coefficients reveal that the magnitudes of the cation–cation, anion–anion, and cation–anion correlations are comparable, a signature of highly correlated motion in the electrolyte. Examination of the cation solvation environment indicates the presence of strong cation–anion association across the entire concentration range, which leads to negative t 0+ on the order of −1. Both simulation and experiment also show that the maximum value of t 0+ reaches 0 when the cation concentration is c + = 0.4 M. This is the concentration at which the anions begin to spatially overlap, and lithium ions serve as dynamic linkers to balance cation–cation and cation–anion correlations. Our results provide molecular-level insights into the origin of transference in multivalent electrolytes.

TDCOSMO: II. Six new time delays in lensed quasars from high-cadence monitoring at the MPIA 2.2m telescope

In this paper we present six new time-delay measurements obtained from $R_c$-band monitoring data acquired at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPIA) 2.2 m telescope at La Silla observatory between October 2016 and February 2020. The lensed quasars HE 0047–1756, WG 0214–2105, DES 0407–5006, 2M 1134–2103, PSJ 1606–2333, and DES 2325–5229 were observed almost daily at high signal-to-noise ratio to obtain high-quality light curves where we can record fast and small-amplitude variations of the quasars. We measured time delays between all pairs of multiple images with only one or two seasons of monitoring with the exception of the time delays relative to image D of PSJ 1606–2333. The most precise estimate was obtained for the delay between image A and image B of DES 0407–5006, where $τ_{AB} = –128.4_{–3.8}^{+3.5}$ d (2.8% precision) including systematics due to extrinsic variability in the light curves. For HE 0047–1756, we combined our high-cadence data with measurements from decade-long light curves from previous COSMOGRAIL campaigns, and reach a precision of 0.9 d on the final measurement. The present work demonstrates the feasibility of measuring time delays in lensed quasars in only one or two seasons, provided high signal-to-noise ratio data are obtained at a cadence close to daily.

Electron quantum interference in epitaxial antiferromagnetic NiO thin films

The electron reflectivity from NiO thin films grown on Ag(001) has been systematically studied as a function of film thickness and electron energy. A strong electron quantum interference effect was observed from the NiO film, which is used to derive the unoccupied band dispersion above the Fermi surface along the Γ-X direction using the phase accumulation model. The experimental bands agree well with first-principles calculations. A weaker electron quantum interference effect was also observed from the CoO film.

Thermionic microwave gun for terahertz and synchrotron light sources

Conventional thermionic microwave and radiofrequency (RF) guns can offer high average beam current, which is important for synchrotron light and terahertz (THz) radiation source facilities, as well as for industrial applications. For example, the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory is a national synchrotron radiation light source research facility that utilizes thermionic RF guns. Yet, these existing thermionic guns are bulky, difficult to handle and install, easily detuned, very sensitive to thermal expansion, and are due for a major upgrade and replacement. Here, we present the design of a new, more stable and reliable gun with optimized electromagnetic performance, improved thermal engineering and a more robust cathode mounting technique, which is a critical step to improve the performance of existing and future light sources, industrial accelerators, and electron beam-driven terahertz sources. We will also present a fabricated gun prototype and show results of high-power and beam tests.

New approaches for achieving more perfect transition metal oxide thin films

This perspective considers the enormous promise of epitaxial functional transition metal oxide thin films for future applications in low power electronic and energy applications since they offer wide-ranging and highly tunable functionalities and multifunctionalities, unrivaled among other classes of materials. It also considers the great challenges that must be overcome for transition metal oxide thin films to meet what is needed in the application domain. These challenges arise from the presence of intrinsic defects and strain effects, which lead to extrinsic defects. Current conventional thin film deposition routes often cannot deliver the required perfection and performance. Since there is a strong link between the physical properties, defects and strain, routes to achieving more perfect materials need to be studied. Several emerging methods and modifications of current methods are presented and discussed. The reasons these methods better address the perfection challenge are considered and evaluated.

15.9% organic tandem solar cell with extended near-infrared absorption

Stacking single-junction organic solar cells is effective in increasing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) by reducing the thermalization loss and increasing the open circuit voltage. Current developments of non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) offer a range of materials whose energy gaps are suited for absorbing relatively narrow slices of the solar spectrum, thus easing requirements for current balance between sub-elements in the multijunction stacks. In this report, we demonstrate a solution-processed tandem organic solar cell comprising a binary, visible-absorbing sub-cell and a ternary near-infrared (NIR) absorbing sub-cell. The ternary NIR sub-cell utilizes a narrow energy gap NFA acceptor that enables a broadened and increased absorption compared to a binary NIR sub-cell. An isopropanol surface treatment is developed to connect the hydrophilichydrophobic surfaces in the charge recombination zone (CRZ) located between the sub-cells. The nearly optically and electrically lossless CRZ combined with an anti-reflection coating results in a tandem OPV with PCE = 15.9 ± 0.2 % under AM 1.5G simulated illumination.
