Airfoil leading edge blowing to control bow shock waves

Abstract This manuscript presents a detailed characterization of active control of bow shock waves via leading edge injection, including subsonic coolant ejection and the appearance of Coanda effects. The flow phenomena occurring at steady and pulsating flow injection regimes were analyzed using steady and unsteady two-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes, leading to a precise evaluation of the thermal load and drag reductions. Steady supersonic injection yields the largest abatement in thermal load and aerodynamic drag, while subsonic or fluctuating ones can also provide significant improvements at reduced cooling mass flow rates. Furthermore, a Coanda effect, causing a non-symmetric flow topology, was observed and analyzed for reduced injection port size. This Coanda effect is due to the sudden expansion happening from the injection port to the main flow and it causes the flow topology at the leading edge to become non-symmetric despite the complete symmetry of the problem. This is the first time in the literature such a phenomenon is documented for a supersonic airfoil leading edge injection. Furthermore, it enables the design of novel flow control strategies for the leading edge shock topology and flow structures in supersonic flows.

INN Airfoil Tools

This software package contains code to perform airfoil inverse shape design using a sparsified invertible neural network model. This is a specialized deep learning architecture that enables both network weights to be shared to evaluate forward or inverse passes through the network. As a design tool, this network allows practitioners to specify desired aerodynamic and structural properties and generate shapes that satisfy those properties. The invertible neural network is accompanied with tuned parameters as well as software tools to train new models as needed.

Advanced Turbine Airfoils for Efficient CHP Systems: Energy Storage Integration Analysis

This report documents the energy storage systems (ESS) integration portion of the work conducted under the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) Lab Call DE-LC-000L059 project titled "Advanced Turbine Airfoils for Efficient CHP Systems." The objective of this work is to analyze the previously-developed combined heat and power (CHP) plant with the upgraded gas turbine to include an ESS to improve the operational flexibility. The analysis includes identifying a candidate CHP configuration for the ESS integration and identifying possible storage systems to be integrated. A qualitative analysis was made to down select possible storage technologies and a techno-economic analysis (TEA) was made for the CHP system with the selected storage technology.

Advanced Airfoil Cooling Schemes to Increase Efficiency in Gas Turbines for Combined Heat and Power Applications

This report describes a three-year interdisciplinary effort funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy/Advanced Manufacturing Office (EERE/AMO) to promote market penetration of combined heat and power (CHP) technologies. Prior studies have shown the technical potential for CHP in the United States is much larger than the current deployment of CHP systems. A large portion of the technical potential CHP market aligns with small (<20 MWe) gas turbines. CHP systems are an attractive alternative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. For example, CHP systems can reduce GHG emissions by 30–40% relative to a conventional boiler and power configuration. These GHG emission reductions are “avoided emissions” which means no CO 2 separation or sequestration is required. This report describes an effort to use additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and advanced airfoil cooling designs to increase the turbine inlet temperature by 100 °C for small gas turbines typically used in CHP systems. At the beginning of this effort, baseline performance data for small gas turbines was not available, and the potential benefits of cooling system improvements were not quantified in the available literature.
