Observations of narrow band solar burst structure at decameter wavelengths

A high-speed digital solar radio spectrograph was used in the investigation. This instrument made it possible to observe solar bursts with a time and frequency resolution not obtainable with conventional sweep-frequency spectrographs. A type III burst observed at 40 MHz is shown. The rise and the decay of the type III burst is smooth and gradual, with the decay time exceeding the rise time. An isophote diagram of the same burst is also presented along with some other events.

High-resolution radar maps of the lunar surface at 3.8-cm wavelength

The entire earth-facing lunar surface has been mapped at a resolution of 2 km using the 3.8-cm radar of Haystack Observatory. The observations yield the distribution of the relative radar backscattering efficiency with an accuracy of about 10% for both the polarized (primarily quasi-specular or coherent) and depolarized (diffuse or incoherent) scattered components. The results show a variety of discrete radar features, many of which are correlated with craters or other features of optical photographs. Particular interest, however, attaches to those features with substantially different ratio and optical contrast. An anomaly near 63 degrees is noted in the mean angular scattering law obtained from a summary of the radar data.

Low noise parametric amplifiers for radio astronomy observations at 18-21 cm wavelength

The principle characteristics and use of SHF parametric amplifiers for radiometer input devices are explored. Balanced parametric amplifiers (BPA) are considered as the SHF signal amplifiers allowing production of the amplifier circuit without a special filter to achieve decoupling. Formulas to calculate the basic parameters of a BPA are given. A modulator based on coaxial lines is discussed as the input element of the SHF. Results of laboratory tests of the receiver section and long-term stability studies of the SHF sector are presented.

Reflection beam isolator for submillimeter wavelengths

Magnetoplasma reflection beam isolators for submillimeter wave use are discussed. The basic configuration used is that of the Kerr transverse magneto-optical effect. Theoretical and experimental data at 337 microns using InSb as a plasma are given.

Hollow-cylinder waveguide isolators for use at millimeter wavelengths

A semiconductor waveguide isolator consisting of a hollow column of a semiconductor mounted coaxially is considered in a circular waveguide in a longitudinal dc magnetic field. An elementary and physical analysis based on the excitation of plane waves in the guide and a more rigorous mode matching analysis are presented. These theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results for an InSb isolator at 94GHz and 75 K.

Astronomy at sub-millimeter wavelengths

The first flight test of a gondola containing a Newtonian telescope with a 16 in. primary mirror is described. Bolometer tests were conducted along with gondola design studies, and changes were made in the mechanical system as a result. Parts of the system were rebuilt and tested, and it was found that the flight system had redundant data recording capabilities. In the total flight record, about 160 large signals were noted; about half of these appeared to have the correct shape for genuine signals, and the other were clearly noise spikes (they were large but the signal shape could not have been produced by the observation of a celestial object).

High-resolution maps of H2 regions at far-infrared wavelengths

The first successful flight of a balloon-borne 1-m telescope for far-infrared (40 micron) astronomy occurred on 4 February 1974 (UT), from Palestine, Texas. During 6 h at float altitude, the gyrostabilized telescope mapped the intensity of far-infrared radiation from the H 2 regions Ori A and W3 with a resolution of 1 prime. Partial maps of these regions were made with a resolution of 0.5 prime. These sources were resolved into several components, some of which were previously unknown. Observations of Mars were used for calibration.

Opto-mechanical subsystem of a 10 micrometer wavelength receiver terminal. Waveguide laser local oscillator. Servo system

An engineering model opto-mechanical subsystem for a 10.6-micrometer laser heterodyne receiver is developed, and a CO2 waveguide local oscillator and servo electronics are provided for the receiver. Design goals are presented for the subsystems and overall package design is described. Thermal and mechanical distortion loading tests were performed and the results are included.

A decametric wavelength radio telescope for interplanetary scintillation observations

A phased array, electrically steerable radio telescope (with a total collecting area of 18 acres), constructed for the purpose of remotely sensing electron density irregularity structure in the solar wind, is presented. The radio telescope is able to locate, map, and track large scale features of the solar wind, such as streams and blast waves, by monitoring a large grid of natural radio sources subject to rapid intensity fluctuation (interplanetary scintillation) caused by the irregularity structure. Observations verify the performance of the array, the receiver, and the scintillation signal processing circuitry of the telescope.

ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment

An empirical relation for path diversity gain as a function of terminal separation distance and single site fade depth is presented. This relation is based on existing 15.3 GHz ATS-5 attenuation data and 16.0 GHz radiometric temperature data for earth-space propagation paths. Preliminary 30 GHz ATS-6 diversity data are presented and are found to agree well with this empirical relation.

ATS-6 millimeter wavelength propagation experiment

The real time digital data acquisition system used to acquire ATS-6 propagation data at the fixed, transportable, and unmanned terminals is described. This system performs all digital conversion, formating, merging, and recording. All data from the remote sites are transferred to the fixed terminal for recording on a common digital tape. The current status and summary of operations are also reviewed.

Hollow-cylinder waveguide isolators for use at millimeter wavelengths

The device considered in this study is a semiconductor waveguide isolator consisting of a hollow column of a semiconductor mounted coaxially in a circular waveguide in a longitudinal dc magnetic field. An elementary and physical analysis based on the excitation of plane waves in the guide and a more rigorous mode-matching analysis (MMA) are presented. These theoretical predictions are compared with experimental results for an InSb isolator at 94 GHz and 75 K.

Detection of new celestial objects at far-infrared wavelengths

During a high-altitude balloon flight, sources of far-infrared radiation have been detected with apparent fluxes greater than or about equal to 3 pW/sq cm in the spectral band from 50 to 500 microns. While the sources are not uniquely identifiable with any well-known class of celestial objects, two associations should be noted. Many of the objects lie close to local stars; there is also a tendency to cluster around the ecliptic plane. Alternatively, a new class of celestial objects may have been observed.
