Overview and major characteristics of future aeronautical and space systems

A systematic projection is made of prospective materials and structural systems' performance requirements in light of emerging applications. The applications encompass high-speed/long-range rotorcraft, advanced subsonic commercial aircraft, high speed (supersonic) commercial transports, hypersonic aircraft and missiles, extremely high-altitude cruise aircraft and missiles, and aerospace craft and launch vehicles. A tabulation is presented of the materials/structures/dynamics requirements associated with future aerospace systems, as well as the further development needs foreseen in each such case.

Analytical expressions for radiative properties of planar Rayleigh scattering media, including polarization contributions

The objective of this paper is to provide a convenient and fast way for computing the radiative properties of planar Rayleigh scattering media. Analytical expressions are developed for the three molecular atmospheric functions which are required in remote sensing: the atmospheric reflectance, the transmission function, and the spherical albedo. The expressions are adjusted by using accurate computations performed with successive orders of a scattering code. The accuracy of the code is first checked by using previously published tabulations. The required accuracy of 0.001 in the reflectance unit is achieved by numerical adjustments. The contribution of polarization is considered implicitly. The expressions are shown to be valid for a fairly large range of observational conditions.

A new solar irradiance calibration from 3295 A to 8500 A derived from absolute spectrophotometry of Vega

By imaging sunlight diffracted by 20- and 30-micron diameter pinholes onto the entrance aperture of a photoelectric grating scanner, the solar spectral irradiance was determined relative to the spectrophotometric standard star Vega, observed at night with the same instrument. Solar irradiances are tabulated at 4 A increments from 3295 A to 8500 A. Over most of the visible spectrum, the internal error of measurement is less than 2 percent. This calibration is compared with earlier irradiance measurements by Neckel and Labs (1984) and by Arvesen et al. (1969) and with the high-resolution solar atlas by Kurucz et al. The three calibrations agree well in visible light but differ by as much as 10 percent in the ultraviolet.

Sizing the science data processing requirements for EOS

The methodology used in the compilation and synthesis of baseline science requirements associated with the 30 + EOS (Earth Observing System) instruments and over 2,400 EOS data products (both output and required input) proposed by EOS investigators is discussed. A brief background on EOS and the EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS) is presented, and the approach is outlined in terms of a multilayer model. The methodology used to compile, synthesize, and tabulate requirements within the model is described. The principal benefit of this approach is the reduction of effort needed to update the analysis and maintain the accuracy of the science data processing requirements in response to changes in EOS platforms, instruments, data products, processing center allocations, or other model input parameters. The spreadsheets used in the model provide a compact representation, thereby facilitating review and presentation of the information content.

Ly-alpha emission from cooling flows and measures of the dust content of rich clusters of galaxies

Ly-alpha and UV continuum fluxes from measurements across the emission-line regions of 10 'cooling flow' clusters of galaxies are tabulated. Comparison of Ly-alpha emission fluxes obtained with the IUE satellite with optical Balmer emission fluxes is used to demonstrate that the lines of sight to the centers of these clusters show an average excess reddening E(B-V) about 0.19 above foreground extinction. While some fraction of this may derive from localized extinction in the central (cooling flow) region of the cluster, a substantial portion of this effect should arise from an extended cluster component. The case where this extinction originates in the hot intracluster gas of the cluster halo is considered. Estimates for the corresponding 100-micron infrared emission, assuming grain properties similar to those of interstellar grains, place the expected emission at the about 1/2 Jy level for nearby clusters. Measurements from IRAS pointed mode observations of clusters are consistent with the expected values. These results are used to show that ISO and SIRTF may detect clusters to cosmological distances.

Oxygen-enhanced models for globular cluster stars. III - Horizontal-branch sequences

A large grid of horizontal-branch (HB) evolutionary sequences which have been calculated with core expansion and semiconvection and with enhanced oxygen composition are presented and described. Tracks for 10 different metallicities are computed; they range from (Fe/H) = -0.47 to -2.26 and comprise a total of 115 sequences. The evolution is traced from the zero-age horizontal-branch (ZAHB) to the lower AGB at a point where log L/solar luminosity = 2.25. All of the sequences are illustrated on both the theoretical H-R diagram and on the B, V color-magnitude diagram. A complete set of tables for the ZAHB models and a representative sample of tabulations of the track parameters are provided. The phenomena which control HB evolution morphology, and existing certainties in theoretical HB models are discussed.

An approximate local thermodynamic nonequilibrium radiation model for air

A radiatively coupled viscous shock layer analysis program which includes chemical and thermal nonequilibrium is used to calculate stagnation point flow profiles for typical aeroassisted orbital transfer vehicle conditions. Two methods of predicting local thermodynamic nonequilibrium radiation effects are used as a first and second order approximation to this phenomena. Tabulated results for both nitrogen and air freestreams are given with temperature, species, and radiation profiles for some air conditions. Two body solution results are shown for 45 and 60 degree hyperboloid bodies at 12 km/sec and 80 km altitude. The presented results constitute an advancement in the engineering modeling of radiating nonequilibrium reentry flows.

Asymmetric tip morphology of creep microcracks growing along bimaterial interfaces

The asymmetric tip morphology of a creep microcrack propagating along a bimaterial interface is presented based on the assumptions that the near-tip shapes are developed from surface diffusion controlled crack growth and that a steady state prevails. A single master curve still can adequately describe the near-tip shapes to within 6 percent accuracy, but four cases of crack-tip morphology emerge depending on the ratios of surface to interfacial free energy and diffusivity of the adjoining phases. For fixed ratios of the two surface diffusivities, crack tip morphology maps in the space of specific surface energies are constructed with which areas associated with each individual case are indicated. Predicted cases on a set of bimaterial systems are tabulated and discussed.

A database of aerothermal measurements in hypersonic flow for CFD validation

This paper presents an experimental database selected and compiled from aerothermal measurements obtained on basic model configurations on which fundamental flow phenomena could be most easily examined. The experimental studies were conducted in hypersonic flows in 48-inch, 96-inch, and 6-foot shock tunnels. A special computer program was constructed to provide easy access to the measurements in the database as well as the means to plot the measurements and compare them with imported data. The database contains tabulations of model configurations, freestream conditions, and measurements of heat transfer, pressure, and skin friction for each of the studies selected for inclusion. The first segment contains measurements in laminar flow emphasizing shock-wave boundary-layer interaction. In the second segment, measurements in transitional flows over flat plates and cones are given. The third segment comprises measurements in regions of shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interactions. Studies of the effects of surface roughness of nosetips and conical afterbodies are presented in the fourth segment of the database. Detailed measurements in regions of shock/shock boundary layer interaction are contained in the fifth segment. Measurements in regions of wall jet and transpiration cooling are presented in the final two segments.

Heat-Transfer Measurements Obtained on the X-15 Airplane Including Correlations With Wind-Tunnel Results

Heat-transfer measurements were obtained on the X-15 airplane from two flights under quasi-steady conditions at a free-stream Mach number of 5.1 and an angle of attack of 2.0° and a free-stream Mach number of 4.98 and an angle of attack of 16.3°. These measurements were made at corresponding free-stream Reynolds numbers of 2.45 × 10 6 and 1.31 × 10 6 per foot (8.04 × 10 6 and 4.30 × 10 6 per meter). Experimental heat-transfer coefficients derived from temperatures obtained from 200 recording thermocouples on the skin of the airplane are tabulated. Correlations with wind-tunnel results show that the wind-tunnel data are in fair-to-good agreement with the flight data obtained on the wing, ventral tail, and vertical tail at low angles of attack but are generally in poor agreement with the high-angle-of-attack data and the low-angle-of-attack fuselage data.

More Cyclic-Oxidation Data For Turbine Alloys

Document presents data on cyclic oxidation of high-temperature, high-strength, nickel-base and cobalt-base alloys for turbines. Completes presentation of data begun in NASA Technical Memorandum 83665 (Revised 1989), "High-Temperature Cyclic Oxidation Data, Turbine Alloys, Part 1." Data consist of plots and tabulations of changes in specific weight as function of time, and lists of surface and spalled material phases identified by x-ray diffraction measurements.

Al Umchaimin depression, Western Iraq: An impact structure?

Al Umchaimin, in Arabic 'hiding place' or 'place of ambush', is located at latitude 32 degrees 35.5 N and longitude 39 degrees 25 E. The nearly circular depression averages 2.75 km in diameter and is 33-42 m deep. It is floored with fine-grained, clay-rich deposits, estimated to be 36 m thick, the surface of which shows well-developed desiccation fissures or mudcracks when dry. Because of its nearly circular planimetric shape and its apparent isolation from other surface and subsurface features, it has been considered by some to be a possible meteorite impact structure and by others to be a surface collapse feature that originated following removal of magma from the subsurface as the magma extruded elsewhere. Al Umchaimin was listed in the U.S. Geological Survey tabulation of 110 structures worldwide for which a meteorite impact origin had been suggested. It was placed in Category 6 Structures for which more data are required for classification. It is concluded that, on the basis of the studies that have been made of Al Umchaimin and on the basis of the brief site visit made, Al Umchaimin probably is not an impact structure but most likely resulted from the enlargement and coalescence of sink holes and eventual collapse of the roof material into the resulting cavity.

Atlas of albedo and absorbed solar radiation derived from Nimbus 7 earth radiation budget data set, November 1985 to October 1987

An atlas of monthly mean global contour maps of albedo and absorbed solar radiation is presented for 21 months from Nov. 1985 to Oct. 1987. These data were retrieved from measurements made by the shortwave wide-field-of-view radiometer of the Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) instrument aboard the Nimbus 7 spacecraft. Profiles of zonal mean albedos and absorbed solar radiation were tabulated. These geographical distributions are provided as a resource for researchers studying the radiation budget of the Earth. The El Nino/Southern Oscillation event of 1986-1987 is included in this data set. This atlas of albedo and absorbed solar radiation extends to 12 years the period covered by two similar atlases: NASA RP-1230 (Jul. 1975 - Oct. 1978) and NASA RP-1231 (Nov. 1978 - Oct. 1985). These three compilations complement the atlases of outgoing longwave radiation by Bess and Smith in NASA RP-1185, RP-1186, and RP-1261, which were also based on the Nimbus 6 and 7 ERB data.

Air-breathing hypersonic vehicle guidance and control studies: An integrated trajectory/control analysis methodology, phase 2

An integrated trajectory/control analysis algorithm has been used to generate trajectories and desired control strategies for two different hypersonic air-breathing vehicle models and orbit targets. Both models used cubic spline curve fit tabulated winged-cone accelerator vehicle representations. Near-fuel-optimal, horizontal takeoff trajectories, imposing a dynamic pressure limit of 1000 psf, were developed. The first model analysis case involved a polar orbit and included the dynamic effects of using elevons to maintain longitudinal trim. Analysis results indicated problems with the adequacy of the propulsion model and highlighted dynamic pressure/altitude instabilities when using vehicle angle of attack as a control variable. Also, the magnitude of computed elevon deflections to maintain trim suggested a need for alternative pitch moment management strategies. The second analysis case was reformulated to use vehicle pitch attitude relative to the local vertical as the control variable. A new, more realistic, air-breathing propulsion model was incorporated. Pitch trim calculations were dropped and an equatorial orbit was specified. Changes in flight characteristics due to the new propulsion model have been identified. Flight regimes demanding rapid attitude changes have been noted. Also, some issues that would affect design of closed-loop controllers were ascertained.

Effects of orbital exposure on Halar during the LDEF mission

Thermomechanical Analysis (TMA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were performed on samples of Halar exposed on the LDEF Mission for 6 years in orbit and unexposed Halar control samples. Sections 10-100 microns thick were removed from the exposed surface down to a depth of 1,000 microns through the 3 mm thick samples. The TMA and DSC results, which arise from the entire slice and not just its surface, showed no differences between the LDEF and the control samples. TMA scans were run from ambient to 300 C; results were compared by a tabulation of the glass transition temperatures. DSC scans were run from ambient to 700 C; the enthalpy of melting was compared for the samples as a function of section depth with the sample. The TGA results, which arise from the surface of the sample initially, showed a sharp increase in the topmost 50 micron section (the exposed, discolored side) in the weight loss of 170 C in oxygen. This weight loss dropped to bulk values in the range of depth of 50-200 microns. The control sample showed only a slight increase in weight loss as the top surface was approached. The LDEF Halar sample appears to be mechanically undamaged, with a surface layer which oxidizes faster as a result of orbital exposure.

Fully energy-dependent HZETRN (a galactic cosmic-ray transport code)

For extended manned space missions, the radiation shielding design requires efficient and accurate cosmic-ray transport codes that can handle the physics processes in detail. The Langley Research Center galactic cosmic-ray transport code (HZETRN) is currently under development for such design use. The cross sections for the production of secondary nucleons in the existing HZETRN code are energy dependent only for nucleon collisions. The approximation of energy-independent, heavy-ion fragmentation cross section is now removed by implementing a mathematically simplified energy-dependent stepping formalism for heavy ions. The cross section at each computational grid is obtained by linear interpolation from a few tabulated data to minimize computing time. Test runs were made for galactic cosmic-ray transport through a liquid hydrogen shield and a water shield at solar minimum. The results show no appreciable change in total fluxes or computing time compared with energy-independent calculations. Differences in high LET (linear energy transfer) spectra are noted, however, because of the large variation in cross sections at the low-energy region. The high LET components are significantly higher in the new code and have important implications on biological risk estimates for heavy-ion exposure.

NASA thesaurus combined file postings statistics

The NASA Thesaurus Combined File Postings Statistics is published semiannually (January and July). This alphabetical listing of postable subject terms contained in the NASA Thesaurus is used to display the number of postings (documents) indexed by each subject term from 1968 to date. The postings totals per item are separated by announcement of other media into STAR, IAA, COSMIC, and OTHER, columnar entries covering the NASA document collection (1968 to date). This is a cumulative publication, and except for special cases, no reference is needed to previous issuances. Retention of the January 1992 issue could be helpful for book information. With the July 1992 issue, NALNET book statistics have been replaced by COSMIC statistics for NASA funded software. File postings statistics for the Alternate Data Base covering NASA collection from 1962 through 1967 were published on a one-time basis in September 1975. Subject terms for the Alternate Data Base are derived from the subject Authority List, reprinted 1985, which is available upon request. The distribution of 19,697,748 postings among the 17,446 NASA Thesaurus terms is tabulated on the last page of the NASA Thesaurus Combined File Postings Statistics.

NASA Space Geodesy Program: GSFC data analysis, 1992. Crustal Dynamics Project VLBI geodetic results, 1979 - 1991

The Goddard VLBI group reports the results of analyzing 1648 Mark 3 data sets acquired from fixed and mobile observing sites through the end of 1991, and available to the Crustal Dynamics Project. Two large solutions were used to obtain Earth rotation parameters, nutation offsets, radio source positions, site positions, site velocities, and baseline evolution. Site positions are tabulated on a yearly basis for 1979 to 1995, inclusive. Site velocities are presented in both geocentric Cartesian and topocentric coordinates. Baseline evolution is plotted for 200 baselines, and individual length determinations are presented for an additional 356 baselines. This report includes 155 quasar radio sources, 96 fixed stations and mobile sites, and 556 baselines.
