Formation and degradation mechanism of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite thin film fabricated by electrospray technique

Electrospray deposition technique has been reported previously for fabricating effective and stable perovskite thin film, leading to efficient perovskite solar cells. Here, in this work, a comprehensive investigation of the formation mechanism of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 ) film by electrospray technique is demonstrated and compared to the formation mechanism through the conventional spin coating technique. In the electrospray process, charged MAI nanoparticles are gradually introduced onto the PbI 2 film, intercalating within the PbI 2 structure to produce the perovskite film. In contrast, the spin-coating method involves supplying the MAI solution in bulk, leading to perovskite crystal formation through the dissolution of the PbI 2 layer by the MAI solution, followed by recrystallization into perovskite oriented in the [110] direction, 30° inclined to the substrate. The impact of charge and the electric field on the formation of perovskite film using the electrospray is explored. Furthermore, the intrinsic stability of perovskite films is monitored in real-time in a highly humid environment (≥80 % relative humidity (RH)) using in-situ Grazing Incidence Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (GIWAXS), and a degradation mechanism is proposed to enhance the durability of the perovskite-based devices. The study further delves into the comparison of the stability of electrosprayed and spin-coated perovskite film, and the impact of humidity level and the presence of a hole-transporting layer on the stability of the perovskite layer. Overall, this work provides a detailed understanding of the formation and humidity-induced degradation mechanism of electrosprayed perovskite films, offering insights that can extend to various applications of perovskite materials.

Mid-infrared frequency doubling using strip-loaded silicon nitride on epitaxial barium titanate thin film waveguides

Broadband mid-infrared (mid-IR) frequency doubling was demonstrated using nonlinear barium titanate (BTO) thin films. The device has a strip-loaded waveguide structure consisting of top silicon nitride (SiN) strips and an underneath BTO guiding layer. The epitaxial BTO was deposited on a strontium titanate (STO) substrate by pulsed-laser deposition. Through a SiN grating coupler, the pumping mid-IR light at wavelength λ<!-- λ --> = 3.30 −<!-- - --> 3.45 µ<!-- µ --> m was coupled into the nonlinear BTO layer, where the spectrum of the near-infrared (NIR) second-harmonic generation was characterized. The developed BTO waveguides provide a platform for mid-IR nonlinear integrated photonics and on-chip quantum optics.

Very low cost thin film CdS-Cu2S solar cell development using chemical spraying

A chemical spray process for the production of thin film CdS-Cu2S solar cells is discussed that is projected to cost less than $60/kW in very large scale production. The average efficiency of these cells has been improved from less than 0.3% in 1971 about 4.5% at present. Further developments for the process are considered to raise the efficiency, and to attain long life stability.

Transmission and reflection studies of thin films in the vacuum ultraviolet

Both the transmittance and reflectance of 2 mm thick MgF2 substrates and of thin films of BaF2, CaF2, LaF3, MgF2, Al2O3, HfO2, and SiO2 deposited on these substrates were measured for the wavelength range 120 nm to 230 nm. Results for BaF2, LaF2 and MgF2 show promise as being good materials from which interference filters can be made. The software and related hardware needed to take large amounts of data automatically in future measurements of the transmittance and reflectance was developed.

Thin film molybdenum silicide as potential temperature sensors for turbine engines

Temperature measurements of Mo-Si-based thin-film resistance thermometers were studied. Annealing in an argon ambient at a temperature above 1000 C for at least 1 h is required to form the stable tetragonal MoSi2 phase. With a crack-free 2-micron-thick AlN barrier layer on top, a sensor was tested up to 1200 C. The resistivity vs temperature characteristic shows the room temperature resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR) of the sensor to be approximately 350 microohm and 0.01195 K, respectively. No film adhesion problems were observed for at least four testing cycles.

Multilayer thin film design as far ultraviolet polarizers

We use a concept of induced transmission and absorption to design multilayer thin film reflection polarizers in the FUV region. We achieve high s-polarization reflectance and a high degree of polarization by means of a MgF2/Al/MgF2 three layer structure on an opaque thick film of aluminum as the substrate. For convenience they are designed at a 45 deg angle of incidence. For example, our polarizer designed for the Lyman-alpha line (121.6 nm) has 88.67 percent reflectance for the s-polarization case, and 1.21 percent for the p-polarization case, with a degree of polarization of 97.31 percent. If we make a double surface polarizer with this design, it will have a degree of polarization of 99.96 percent and s-polarization throughput of 78.62 percent.

Kinetic Studies on Photodeposition of Polydiacetylene Thin Film from Solution: Preliminary Determination of the Rate Law

Preliminary kinetic studies were undertaken on the photodeposition of thin films of a polydiacetylene derivative of 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline from monomer solutions onto quartz substrates. Solutions of the monomer, DAMNA, in 1,2-dichloroethane at various concentrations were irradiated at 364 nm using an argon-ion laser at several intensities. It was found that the rate of polydiacetylene (PDAMNA) film photodeposition varies linearly with UV light intensity and as the square root of monomer concentration.

A Novel Inter Core-Cladding Lithium Niobate Thin Film Coated Fiber Modulator/Sensor

A fiber modulator/sensor has been fabricated by depositing a lithium niobate sol-gel thin film between the core and cladding of a fiber preform. The preform is then drawn into 125 micron fiber. The proposed design of lithium niobate cylinder fibers can enhance the existing methodology for detecting sound waves under water utilizing the acoustooptic properties of lithium niobate. Upon application of a stress or strain, light propagating inside the core, according to the principle of total internal reflection, escapes, into the cladding because of the photoelastic boundary layer of lithium niobate. Test results of the lithium niobate fiber reveal a reduction in the 1550 nm, 4mW source with applied tension. The source power from an ordinary quartz fiber under the same stress condition remained invariant to applied tension.

RF and DC Power Handling Characterization of Thin Film Resistors Embedded on LCP

For the first time, the DC and RF power handling capability of NiCrAlSi thin film resistors on Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) is presented. It is shown that there is a maximum power that the resistors can handle without causing degradation of the resistors, and this value is significantly less than the power required for burn out of the resistors. EDAX shows that the resistors fail due to electromigration of Ni and Cr, and migration of C from the LCP.

Dissipation of moving vortices in thin films

In this letter, moving vortices in thin superconducting films are considered within the time-dependent London description. The dissipation due to out-of-core normal excitations for two vortices moving together turns out to have a minimum for the separation vector $\textit{a}$ parallel to the velocity and equal to $a_m$ ≈ 2.2 Λ , where Λ is the Pearl length. The minimum entropy production suggests that moving vortices should have a tendency to form chains along the velocity with a period of the order $a_m$.

Layer by layer thin film fabrication with in-process laser patterning

A modification of the traditional layer by layer process where the substrate is irradiated with laser light during the polycation and/or polyanion dipping cycles is described. By adjusting the laser irradiation time during dipping, irradiation power, number of bilayers, and the location and speed of laser irradiation, a variety of structures with controlled thicknesses can be fabricated. Laser patterned multilayer PAH/PTEBS polymer thin films were fabricated and characterized with absorbance mapping to demonstrate several patterning approaches. Results for 1) two laser patterned tracks, 2) single laser patterned track with varied average laser power across the sample from a continuously variable neutral density filter, and 3) laser patterning using a beam sent through multiple circular apertures are described. Based on the variable neutral density filter laser pattern, for 20 bilayer PAH/PTEBS films, an absorbance difference between off and on pattern of 0.1 requires an average laser power of less than 15 mW at 405 nm. The patterns produced are on the scale of several millimeters, though they could be made much smaller by focusing the laser used for patterning.

Critical slowing of the spin and charge density wave order in thin film Cr following photoexcitation

We report on the evolution of the charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave (SDW) orders of a chromium film following photoexcitation with an ultrafast optical laser pulse. The CDW is measured by ultrafast time-resolved x-ray diffraction of the CDW satellite that tracks the suppression and recovery of the CDW following photoexcitation. We find that as the temperature of the film approaches a discontinuous phase transition in the CDW and SDW orders, the time scales of recovery increase exponentially from the expected thermal time scales. We extend a Landau model for SDW systems to account for this critical slowing with the appropriate boundary conditions imposed by the geometry of the thin film system. This model allows us to assess the energy barrier between the available CDW/SDW states with different spatial periodicities.
