Search for Accelerator-Produced Sub-GeV Dark Matter with the NOvA Near Detector

The NuMI facility at Fermilab produces a high-intensity beam of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos, designed to study neutrino oscillations. This beam may also be a source of dark matter particles produced through a light mediator. We search for dark matter particles with masses between 1 and 200 MeV that interact with Standard Model particles via a vector portal, producing forward-scattered single-electron events in the NOvA near detector. We set limits on the dark-visible coupling based on an exposure of 2.55x10^21 protons of 120 GeV energy on the NuMI target. For the dark matter mass range 10-20 MeV, this analysis sets the tightest constraints on the coupling to date.

Timing-Based Search for Magnetic Monopoles with the NOvA Detector on the Surface

We report a search for a magnetic monopole component of the cosmic-ray flux in a 2743-live-day exposure of the NOvA experiment's Far Detector, a 14 kt segmented liquid scintillator detector designed primarily to observe GeV-scale electron neutrinos. No events consistent with monopoles were observed, setting an upper limit on the flux of $8\times 10^{-16}~\mathrm{cm^{-2}s^{-1}sr^{-1}}$ at 90% C.L. for monopole speed $6\times 10^{-4} < β< 5\times 10^{-3}$ and mass greater than $10^{9}$ GeV. Because of NOvA's small overburden of 3 meters-water equivalent, this constraint covers a previously unexplored low-mass region.

Search for Q ~0 Order near a Forbidden Bragg Position in Bi 2.1 Sr 1.9 CaCu 2 O 8+x with Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering

Identifying what broken symmetries are present in the cuprates has become a major area of research. Many authors have reported evidence for so-called “Q ~ 0” order that involves broken inversion, mirror, chiral, or time-reversal symmetry that is uniform in space. Not all these observations are well understood and new experimental probes are needed. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS) to search for Q ~ 0 order in Bi 2.1 Sr 1.9 CaCu 2 O 8+x (Bi-2212) by measuring the region of a forbidden Bragg peak, (0,0,3), which is normally extinguished by symmetry but may become allowed on resonance if valence band order is present. Using circularly polarized light, we found that this reflection becomes allowed on the CuL 3 resonance for temperatures T c < T < T*, though remains absent in linear polarization and at other temperatures. This observation suggests the existence of spatially uniform valence band order near the pseudogap temperature. In addition, we observed periodic oscillations in the specular reflectivity from the sample surface that resemble thin film interference fringes, though no known film is present. These fringes are highly resonant, appear in all polarizations, and exhibit a period that depends on the location where the beam strikes the sample surface. We speculate that these fringes arise from interaction between some intrinsic valence band instability and extrinsic structural surface morphologies of the material. Our study supports the existence of some kind of Q ~ 0 broken symmetry state in Bi-2212 at intermediate temperatures. Further studies using a microfocused beam, which could disentangle microscopic effects from macroscopic heterogeneities, are needed to ascertain the universality of the effect.

A Deep-Learning-Based Muon Neutrino CCQE Selection for Searches Beyond the Standard Model with MicroBooNE

The anomalous Low Energy Excess (LEE) of electron neutrinos and antineutrinos in MiniBooNE has inspired both theories and entire experiments to probe the heart of its mystery. One such experiment is MicroBooNE. This dissertation presents an important facet of its LEE investigation: how a powerful systematic can be levied on this signal through parallel study of a highly correlated channel in muon neutrinos. This constraint serves to strengthen MicroBooNE's ability to confirm or validate the cause of the LEE and will lay the groundwork for future oscillation experiments in Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) detector experiments like SBN and DUNE. In addition, this muon channel can be used to test oscillations directly, demonstrated through the world's first muon neutrino disappearance search with LArTPC data.

A Forward Multiparticle Spectrometer for the LHC: Hadron spectra and Long-lived particle search

I describe a possible Forward Multiparticle Spectrometer (FMS) that could be installed downstream of the superconducting recombination dipole D1 in Run 4, from z = 96 m - 126 m to measure multi-TeV hadron spectra in low luminosity p + p collisions at Rt(s) = 14 TeV, as well as p + O and O + O collisions as relevant for cosmic ray showers. Light antinuclei and charmed hadrons at high Feynman xF can be measured, both of importance for astrophysics. At the full high luminosity HL-LHC a search for new long-lived neutral particles (LLPs) decaying in a 20 m long, 70 cm diameter vacuum pipe to visible decay modes (including gamma+gamma, e+e-, mu+mu-, tau+tau-, ccbar and jets) can be made. The FMS is especially well suited for LLPs with 1 GeV < M(X)< 10 GeV and lifetimes c.tau from about 10 m to several km. I discuss this as a possible addition to CMS but it has no formal approval yet, therefore the talk is not given on behalf of CMS.

Sensitivity of future liquid argon dark matter search experiments to core-collapse supernova neutrinos

Future liquid-argon DarkSide-20k and ARGO detectors, designed for direct dark matter search, will be sensitive also to core-collapse supernova neutrinos, via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering. This interaction channel is flavor-insensitive with a high-cross section, enabling for a high-statistics neutrino detection with target masses of $\sim$50~t and $\sim$360~t for DarkSide-20k and ARGO, respectively. Thanks to the low-energy threshold of $\sim$0.5~keV$_{nr}$ achievable by exploiting the ionization channel, DarkSide-20k and ARGO have the potential to discover supernova bursts throughout our galaxy and up to the Small Magellanic Cloud, respectively, assuming a 11-M$_{\odot}$ progenitor star. We report also on the sensitivity to the neutronization burst, whose electron neutrino flux is suppressed by oscillations when detected via charged current and elastic scattering. Finally, the accuracies in the reconstruction of the average and total neutrino energy in the different phases of the supernova burst, as well as its time profile, are also discussed, taking into account the expected background and the detector response.

Grid-Interactive Multi-Zone Building Control Using Reinforcement Learning with Global-Local Policy Search: Preprint

In this paper, we develop a grid-interactive multi-zone building controller based on a deep reinforcement learning (RL) approach. The controller is designed to facilitate building operation during normal conditions and demand response events, while ensuring occupants comfort and energy efficiency. We leverage a continuous action space RL formulation, and devise a two-stage global-local RL training framework. In the first stage, a global fast policy search is performed using a gradient-free RL algorithm. In the second stage, a local fine-tuning is conducted using a policy gradient method. In contrast to the state-of-the-art model predictive control (MPC) approach, the proposed RL controller does not require complex computation during real-time operation and can adapt to non-linear building models. We illustrate the controller performance numerically using a five-zone commercial building.

Topmetal CMOS direct charge sensing plane for neutrinoless double-beta decay search in high-pressure gaseous TPC

We propose a novel charge sensing concept for high-pressure Time Projection Chamber (TPC) to search for Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay (NLDBD) with ton-scale isotope mass and beyond. A meter-sized plane, tiled with an array of CMOS integrated sensors called Topmetal that directly collect charge without gas avalanche gain, is to be deployed into a high-pressure gaseous TPC with working gases containing suitable NLDBD candidate isotopes such as Xe-136 and Se-82. The Topmetal sensor has an electronic noise <30 e- per pixel, which allows the detector to reach <1% FWHM energy resolution at the NLDBD Q-value for both Xe-136 and 82SeF6 gases by measuring ionization charges alone. The elimination of charge avalanche gain allows the direct sensing of slow-drifting ions, which enables the use of highly electronegative gas SeF6 in which free electrons do not exist. It supports the swapping of working gases without hardware modification, which is a unique way to validate signals against radioactive backgrounds. Since the sensor manufacturing and plane assembling could leverage unaltered industrial mass-production processes, stability, uniformity, scalability, and cost-effectiveness that are required for ton-scale experiments could all be reached. The strengths of TPC such as 3D ionization tracking and decay daughter tagging are retained. This development could lead to a competitive NLDBD experiment at and above ton-scale. The conceptual considerations, simulations, and initial prototyping are discussed.

Cosmogenic background rejection for the sterile neutrino search with the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program Far Detector

As the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program Far Detector, the ICARUS liquid argon time-projection chamber will operate at shallow depth and therefore be exposed to the full surface flux of cosmic rays. This poses a problematic background to the sterile neutrino search. A direct way to reject this background is to surround the cryostat with a detector capable of tagging incident cosmic muons with high efficiency, the Cosmic Ray Tagging System (CRT). I have worked to develop the CRT detector hardware and the simulation and reconstruction software. This system, currently undergoing installation, is approximately 25% commissioned and taking data. I have developed a powerful method for cosmogenic background rejection utilizing the CRT and Photon Detection System. Results from a simulation based study, informed by CRT data, demonstrate the power of the technique in rejecting cosmogenic events with little adverse impact on the neutrino sample.

Complementarity between neutrinoless double beta decay and collider searches for heavy neutrinos in composite-fermion models

Composite-fermion models predict excited quarks and leptons with mass scales which can potentially be observed at high-energy colliders like the LHC; the most recent exclusion limits from the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations corner excited-fermion masses and the compositeness scale to the multi-TeV range. At the same time, hypothetical composite Majorana neutrinos would lead to observable effects in neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu \beta \beta$) experiments. In this work, we show that the current composite-neutrino exclusion limit $M_N>4.6$ TeV, as extracted from direct searches at the LHC, can indeed be further improved to $M_N>8.8$ TeV by including the bound on the nuclear transition $^{136}$Xe $\to ^{136}$Ba + $2e^-$. Looking ahead, the forthcoming HL-LHC will allow probing a larger portion of the parameter-space, nevertheless, it will still benefit from the complementary limit provided by $0 \nu \beta \beta$ future detectors to explore composite-neutrino masses up to $12.6$ TeV.

The FACET Project: Forward Aperture CMS ExTension to search for new Long-Lived Particles

FACET is a proposed new subsysem for CMS to search for portals such as dark photons, dark higgs, heavy neutral leptons and axion-like particles in the very forward direction at the High Luminosity LHC. Such particles can penetrate up to 50 m of iron and then decay inside a 14 m$^3$ vacuum pipe made by enlarging an 18 m long section of the LHC pipe to a radius of 50 cm.

The Effect Of Ionization Variance On Nuclear-recoil Dark Matter Searches

Direct detection dark matter experiments are increasingly interested in the low-mass dark matter parameter space, but zero-background low-mass searches require event separation between the electron and nuclear recoil bands, which requires a proper understanding of detector energy reconstruction. Previous simulations have shown that we do not entirely understand the ionization efficiency (yield) for electron and nuclear recoils, as the assumption that the distribution for the yield is normally distributed for a true recoil energy is violated. Since the yield distribution may directly affect dark matter low-mass limits, it is crucial we understand how the yield is distributed. A component to understanding the yield distribution is the variance in the number of electron-hole pairs produced or ionization variance. This effect has been studied relatively infrequently as experiments have been interested in large energy deposits (10 - 100 keV) and could accurately separate electron and nuclear recoil events. For electron recoils, the ionization variance is described by a “Fano” factor. For nuclear recoils the effect can be parameterized by an “effective” Fano factor, which has similar definition but a different physical origin. The nuclear recoil “effective” Fano factor is shown to be much larger than the electron-recoil version above around 10 keV deposited energy.

Search for Non-resonant Higgs Boson Pair Production in the Four Bottom Quark Decay Channel With the CMS Experiment

This dissertation presents a search for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production, focusing on the four bottom quark decay channel. It explores the gluon fusion and vector boson fusion production mechanisms. The analysis is performed with a dataset of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of around 138 inverse femtobarns. Innovative techniques in the areas of object identification, event categorization, signal identification, and background modeling are used to maximize the analysis sensitivity. No excess of signal events are observed relative to the background-only expectation, and 95% CL upper limits on the production cross section are set. The observed upper limit on the standard model production cross section is set at 3.6 times the theoretical expectation. At the time of writing this dissertation, it is the most stringent constraint at the LHC from an individual channel. Furthermore, the observed constraint on the coupling modifier of the Higgs boson self-interaction is set between -2.3 and 9.4. The observed constraint on the coupling modifier of the di-vector-boson-di-Higgs-boson interaction is set between -0.1 and 2.2.

Strategic Search Plan for Axions and Axion-like-particles

Axions are one of the most promising candidates to constitute the DarkMatter in our universe. The benchmark QCD axion covers a narrowparameter space, but many well-motivated extensions of the StandardModel predict Axion-like-Particles in wide parameter regions. In thissupport note we detail on searches covering the extended axion-like particle parameter space proposed to the European strategy
