An Accelerated Creep Testing Program For Nickel Based Superalloys

In order to improve the energy production within the United States, new materials are developed with the goal of increased functionality. These materials are required to perform at extreme pressures and temperatures (up to and beyond 200MPa and 650â??) as well as be sustainable beyond 105 hours. Before developing these materials into components for power generation, mechanical testing is required to better understand the behavior of these materials at various loads and temperatures. The longest of these tests is the conventional creep test which is a real time test that can beyond 105 hours depending on service conditions. Hundreds of specimens must be tested before being approved for use in power generation, but it is extremely difficult to rapidly qualify when each material is required to exceed 105 hours making testing through conventional means unfeasible. While others have designed accelerated testing methods to help qualify materials, many of these experiments use an empirical approach that requires test data to fit already existing creep data. In this study, an accelerated creep test called the stepped isostress method (SSM) is then applied to wrought Inconel 718 (IN 718) specimens. A test matrix is designed using deformation mechanism maps, time-temperature-transformation diagrams, and time-temperature-precipitation diagrams, in order to ensure that microstructurally, the accelerated creep tests fail similarly to the conventional creep tests. The data from the stepped isostress method is then applied to the McVetty and Sin-hyperbolic (Sinh) constitutive models in order to generate a creep master curve. The results from the model fits are then compared to the conventional creep data done from experiments as well as from the NIMS database for Inconel 718. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are used to compare the evolution of the microstructure from the conventional creep and accelerated creep tests. It is found that using the Sinh model on the accelerated creep data provides reasonable creep rupture predictions when compared to the scatter band of creep tests. It was also observed that the microstructural evolution between the SSM experiments and creep tests were very similar in terms of the volume fraction of precipitates and phases.

The Cybersecurity Value-at-Risk Framework

Hydropower remains one of the strongest forms of renewable energy generation methods. It is crucial to address the increasing risks associated with the rapid digitization. The push towards decarbonization also factors in the need to ensure security and resilience for grid-connected renewable energy resources. This report summarizes the U.S. Department of Energy's Water Power Technologies Office's effort to develop a cybersecurity valuation methodology that assists hydropower stakeholders in assessing risks associated with plan operations and gathers valuation guidance through a web-based applicaiton. The Hydropower Cybersecurity Value-at-Risk Framework delivers a platform for industry members to perform self assessments and make informed decisions on their cybersecurity investments.

Application of wideband pulsed high-frequency EPR to molecular quantum spin science

This presentation provides an overview of a range of new applications in the area of molecular quantum spin science that are now possible at the US National High Magnetic Field Laboratory as a result of the development of a wideband, high-power 94 GHz pulsed EPR spectrometer. Here, this instrument allows true Fourier-transform detected experiments spanning a 1 GHz instantaneous bandwidth, akin to what has been possible in NMR for several decades. The presentation will begin by describing experiments on a nitroxide radical using chirped pulses, enabling acquisition of the full spectrum in a single sequence, thus providing a very efficient and convenient means to measure the field orientation dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation time, T 1 . This will be followed by a discussion of a coherent population transfer protocol involving the 2S + 1 = 8 Zeeman levels associated with the spin S = 7/2 Gd 3+ ion, potentially paving the way towards implementation of well-known quantum search algorithms. It will also be shown how the use of chirped pulses provides a route to achieving highly non-thermal spin populations, suggesting novel initialization schemes.

Evaluation of Machine Learning Models for Automated Data Analysis in In-Service Nuclear Power Plant Inspections

The commercial nuclear power industry is facing a potential shortage of certified nondestructive evaluation (NDE) analysts to meet future in-service inspection demands. Automated data analysis (ADA) currently supports human inspectors in tasks such as eddy current evaluations for steam generator examinations. Machine learning (ML) systems are nearing the capability to pass performance demonstration tests for ultrasonic testing (UT) inspections of reactor pressure vessel upper head penetrations in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Current research and development is focused on assisted analysis (AA) of ADA versus fully automated examinations. This presentation will cover assessment of ML flaw detection on dissimilar metal weld (DMW) piping joints.

Advanced Fuels Campaign Execution Plan

The Advanced Fuels Campaign (AFC) Execution Plan details the strategy, mission, scope, and goals—both near-term and long-term—along with the structure and organization of nuclear fuels and materials research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) activities within the Fuel Cycle Technologies (FCT) program. The FCT program, tasked by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), employs a science-based approach to advance fuel technologies. This approach integrates theory, experiments, and multi-scale modeling and simulation (M&S) to develop a predictive understanding of fuel fabrication processes and fuel/cladding performance under irradiation, moving beyond traditional empirical methods. The long-term goals of the AFC are guided by the AFC Strategic Plan and align with the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy (NE) Roadmap [1], which outlines a multi-decade vision for demonstrating and qualifying advanced fuel forms to support diverse fuel cycle options. Near-term goals focus on enhancing accident tolerant fuels (ATF) for Light Water Reactors (LWR), a significant challenge that demands balancing immediate objectives with ongoing progress toward advanced reactor missions. Accelerating the traditional fuel qualification process to meet ATF objectives is another critical challenge. A detailed set of 5-year goals, summarized below, has been developed in line with the overarching science-based fuel development approach: • Advanced LWR Fuel Technologies: By 2027, support the development of advanced LWR fuel technologies with improved performance and enhanced accident tolerance. This includes high burnup (HBu), low enriched uranium (LEU)+, coated cladding, and doped fuel, aimed at complementing industry-led significant LWR uprates and plant refurbishments. • Tristructural Isotropic (TRISO) Fuel: Achieve qualification by 2028 and develop improved designs for emerging markets. • Metal Fuel: Achieve qualification by 2028 and develop improved designs for emerging markets. • Molten Salt Fuel: By 2027, deploy a robust program that enables fuel salt qualification technologies needed to support fuel salt research and development (R&D), focusing on emergent needs to derisk fuel salt production and utilization in advanced reactors. • Long-Term ATF: Develop fuel technologies that enable significant power uprates (~50%) in refurbished or new LWRs while optimizing fissile material utilization and waste disposal. The 5-year milestones in the AFC Execution Plan are contingent on an assumed budget. This Execution Plan will be updated annually to reflect actual funding profiles as budget guidance becomes available, ensuring milestones are adjusted accordingly. In summary, the AFC Execution Plan presents a comprehensive strategy to advance nuclear fuel technologies through a science-based approach, addressing both near-term and long-term goals while adapting to funding realities.
