A Note on the Probability of Initiation Problem

The purpose of this note is to draw attention to Pál for his derivation of the Pál-Bell equation which is used by LLNL and LANL to model Probability of Initiation (POI) problems. Both laboratories credit the equation to Bell and Lee. Although the equation formulated by Bell and Lee and the equation derived by Pál appear to be the same, the equation by Bell and Lee is flawed. Scattering, which was absent in Bell’s original formulation of a POI problem, was later introduced by Bell and Lee by replacing a fission term with a scattering term. Such a replacement, however, leads to an incorrect average number $\overline{v}$ of neutrons that is produced in a fission event. By approaching a POI problem from probabilistic point of view, Pál formulates the problem as a branching process that i) describes the growth of a population of neutrons in a fissile medium, and ii) predicts $\overline{v}$ correctly. There are five reasons for writing this report. The first is to clarify the failing in Bell and Lee’s derivation. The second is to establish the origin of the equation used by the laboratories. The third is to elucidate the fixed point technique formulated by Mokhtar-Kharroubi to solve the Pál-Bell equation. The fourth is to derive the α eigenvalue that is associated with a super-critical situation. The fifth is to describe in the Appendix a second order positivity preserving technique that accelerates the convergence of the first order fixed point method developed by Mokhtar-Kharroubi.

Niowave Design and Analysis of a 200 kW Converter

LANL is providing support to Niowave Inc. on the design and analysis of a 200 kW converter. The current design of the 200 kW (40 MeV, 5 mA electron beam) converter consists of LBE flowing from the top to the bottom. When compared to the Mk.5 20 kW converter, which flowed LBE from the bottom, flowing over a divider plate to create a waterfall, the 200 kW converter eliminates the divider plate, which would otherwise have melted with the higher beam power. Because the LBE flows from the top to the bottom, alternate methods to the divider plate need to be utilized to ensure a stable flow that minimizes splashing at the bottom of the LBE waterfall, while maintaining a uniform LBE thickness at the beam, and steady LBE flow at the desired flow rate.

Optimization of artificial viscosity in production codes based on Gaussian Regression surrogate models

To accurately model flows with shock waves using staggered-grid Lagrangian hydrodynamics, artificial viscosity has to be introduced to convert kinetic energy into internal energy, thereby increasing the entropy across shocks. Determining the appropriate strength of the artificial viscosity is an art and strongly depends on the particular problem and experience of the researcher. The objective of this study is to pose the problem of finding the appropriate strength of artificial viscosity as an optimization problem and solve this problem using machine learning (ML) tools, specifically using surrogate models based on Gaussian Process regression and Bayesian analysis. We describe the optimization method and discuss various practical details of its implementation. The shock-containing problems for which we apply this method all have been implemented in the LANL code FLAG. First, we apply ML to find optimal values to isolated shock problems of different strengths. Second, we apply ML to optimize viscosity for a 1D propagating detonation problem based on Zel’dovich-von Neumann-Doring (ZND) detonation theory using a reactive burn model. We compare results for default (currently used values in FLAG) and optimized values of artificial viscosity for these problems demonstrating the potential for significant improvement in the accuracy of computations.

Management, Efficiency and Treatment of Silica, Chlorides, and other Pollutants (METSiCloPs) of Cooling Tower Water [Slides]

Site-wide water balance suggests that CTs across eight LANL facilities use about 58% of the total potable water bought from LAC (271 MGY). It is vital to make a conscious and calculated effort to reduce the dependence on external water supplies, and potable water. We need to strive to increase CoCs at CTs and improve water efficiency to reduce water consumption.

3D Printing at Los Alamos

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), their additive manufacturing division is seeking to answer the question whether it is possible to 3D print on a 5th axis. The end goal is to achieve true continuous fiber 3D printing. My goal on this project was to learn about additive manufacturing, and to learn how to operate the experimental 3D printer. Each print that was done demonstrated a different pattern that would change the strength and integrity of the print. Overall prints with minimal strand separation and featured weave-like patterns proved to have the best integrity.

Oppenheimer Study Center Solar Analysis

The thermal solar array on the roof of the Oppenheimer Study Center (03-0207) has been defunct and aging progressively worse for years. This study set out to investigate the current state of the abandoned solar array, its various connected systems, and the viability of replacing the array with modern PV panels. This will help offset the energy usage of the building and bring the building in line with upcoming LANL goals of electrification and net-zero emissions (Exec. Order 14057, Sec. 201-5). This study is intended to be a high level, over-the-shoulder, analysis of impact and feasibility, and shall not be considered as an approved design. Further detailed design and analysis will be necessary beyond the concept feasibility phase of this project.

Energy Dependent Fission Product Yields

Since 2011, the LLNL-LANL-TUNL collaboration has undertaken experimental measurements of the energy evolution of the chain fission product yields (FPY) from neutron-induced fission of 235 U, 238 U, and 239 Pu using quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced at the TUNL 10 MV Van de Graaff accelerator. Our method relies on direct, post-irradiation γ-ray spectroscopy of γ-rays emitted by fission products in actinide targets, with multiple γ-ray spectra taken continuously for a period from a half-hour to three months from the end of irradiation. The main experimental results of this study have been published for eight incident neutron energies of En = 0.58, 1.37, 2.37, 3.6, 4.6, 5.5, 8.9 and 14.8 MeV [1–4]. For each incident energy, approximately 16 cumulative FPYs were determined, nearly all being high-yield fission products, i.e., those occurring in the peaks of the mass distributions. As will be described in this report, our FPY analysis has been significantly improved in every step of the process, reducing the overall systematic uncertainties compared to previously published data.

MARSAME Radiological Release Report for Metal Items from TA 53, Set 20

EPC-ES has evaluated the survey results for metal items from the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) and found that the metal items described in Table 1 of this report (identified by RP Tracking Numbers) meet the criteria for unrestricted release under DOE Order 458.1 Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment (DOE 2020) and can be recycled. This conclusion is based on the known history of the metal items and on radiation survey data (see the completed RP-Form-031 LANSCE Metals Clearance Log for each item). None of the items in this report are located within radiological areas. Therefore, the items are considered unencumbered and are not subject to the moratorium suspension on metal recycling from Department of Energy facilities. Additionally, LANL has determined that there is no practical opportunity for internal DOE reuse or recycling of this metal. Process knowledge indicates that these metal items were unlikely to ever be in direct contact with the beam and thus are unlikely to have become activated. Surface contamination measurements (both total and removable) showed either no detectable radioactivity or activity levels within the range of background. All measurements for volumetric contamination were indistinguishable from background based on calculated decision limits. Additionally, all gamma isotopic surveys conducted for defense-in-depth showed no identifiable gamma radiation from beam activation.

Niowave: Flow measurement development - FY2022

It is critical to maintain proper flow rate of lead bismuth eutectic (LBE) for the operation of the Niowave converter. The high temperature of the LBE (> 200 °C) makes it difficult to purchase simple off the shelf flow meters. One method that can be used to measure the flow rate indirectly, is to use a venturi, with a known throat diameter and differential pressure measurement across the throat. LANL designed the venturi and after numerous iterations with vendors, narrowed down a differential pressure transducer to use with the venturi.
