Terrestrial solar arrays with integral glass construction

An excellent encapsulation system for a terrestrial solar array can be formed using two sheets of glass. Superior technical character, very low cost and simple assembly can result if the active components and the glass sheets are integrally bonded together such that the array is hermetically sealed without employing organic encapsulation materials. Such an approach is being developed using electrostatic bonding. Status of this development is described. Functioning integral glass test modules have been fabricated and subjected to environmental testing. Results have been excellent.

Integrated pulse profiles and mean fluxes of 24 pulsars at 2.388 gigahertz

Integrated pulse profiles are presented which represent the superposition of several hundred thousand pulses and approximate the true mean pulse profiles at 2.388 GHz for 24 pulsars. Observed interpulses are examined, the mean pulse energy associated with each integrated pulse profile is determined, and peak pulse fluxes are estimated. Comparison with later observations at 2.7 GHz indicates significant differences between the mean pulse energies measured at 2.388 and 2.7 GHz in several cases.

Method for analyzing radiation sensitivity of integrated circuits

A method for analyzing the radiation sensitivity of an integrated circuit is described to determine the components. The application of a narrow radiation beam to portions of the circuit is considered. The circuit is operated under normal bias conditions during the application of radiation in a dosage that is likely to cause malfunction of at least some transistors, while the circuit is monitored for failure of the irradiated transistor. When a radiation sensitive transistor is found, then the radiation beam is further narrowed and, using a fresh integrated circuit, a very narrow beam is applied to different parts of the transistor, such as its junctions, to locate the points of greatest sensitivity.

Hypersonic cruise aircraft propulsion integration study, volume 1

A hypersonic cruise transport conceptual design is described. The integration of the subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic propulsion systems with the aerodynamic design of the airframe is emphasized. An evaluation of various configurations of aircraft and propulsion integration concepts, and selection and refinement of a final design are given. This configuration was used as a baseline to compare two propulsion concepts - one using a fixed geometry dual combustion mode scramjet and the other a variable geometry ramjet engine. Both concepts used turbojet engines for takeoff, landing and acceleration to supersonic speed.

Introduction: The challenge of optimum integration of propulsion systems and large space structures

A functional matrix of possible propulsion system characteristics for a spacecraft for deployable and assembled spacecraft structures shows that either electric propulsion or low thrust chemical propulsion systems could provide the propulsion required. The trade-off considerations of a single propulsion engine or multiengines are outlined and it is shown that a single point engine is bounded by some upper limit of thrust for assembled spacecraft. The matrix also shows several additional functions that can be provided to the spacecraft if a propulsion system is an integral part of the spacecraft. A review of all of the functions that can be provided for a spacecraft by an integral propulsion system may result in the inclusion of the propulsion for several functions even if no single function were mandatory. Propulsion interface issues for each combination of engines are identified.

Shape integral method for magnetospheric shapes

A method is developed for calculating the shape of any magnetopause to arbitrarily high precision. The method uses an integral equation which is evaluated for a trial shape. The resulting values of the integral equation as a function of auxiliary variables indicate how close one is to the desired solution. A variational method can then be used to improve the trial shape. Some potential applications are briefly mentioned.

Multiwavelength monolithic integrated fiber-optic terminal

The paper presents the Multiwavelength Monolithic Integrated Fiber Optic Terminal (MMIFOT) developed under NASA sponsorship. The program aims to utilize the advantage of optical fiber and integrated optical device technology to achieve parallel transmission of many data channels over the same optical fiber link, and to develop an eight channel wavelength multiplexed fiber optic link that transmits eight bit words in a parallel format at a nominal rate of 20 Mw/s; in the second phase of the program a transmitter/multiplexer chip will be developed. The MMIFOT configuration, the receiver/demultiplexer development, and the waveguide detector development are discussed, concluding that the first phase of the MMIFOT program will culminate in the demonstration of an eight channel receiver/demultiplexer chip with a four channel breadboard multiplexer with the data rate of 20 Mbps per channel with a dynamic range of minimum 20 dB.

Proposed smart integrated-optical preprocessor using holographic subtraction

The paper presents a proposed integrated-optical preprocessor with a holographic subtraction. It is based on an optical analog of a set of N analog voltages formed by passing an optical plane wave, confined in an electrooptic waveguide, under a set of N electrodes to which the voltages are applied; in the limit in which diffraction is ignored, the wavefront of the emerging guided wave will have superimposed upon it N discrete phase shifts. Processors which operate upon voltages encoded in this manner are being fabricated; they include a comparator in which incoming data are compared to a holographic record of the optical analog of a reference set, and a 'smart' system based upon holographic self-subtraction, in which the processor can independently adapt to changes in background information. The preprocessor operation is described in the screening, identification, and the self-subtraction modes, and implementation of devices in an integrated optical configuration is discussed.

Application of the method of integral relations to unsteady fluid flow problems with shocks

A mixed method using both the method of integral relations and the finite difference technique is developed for the solution of unsteady flow problems. The integral relations method is based upon a chosen interpolating function dependent only on the time domain. The resulting local semidiscrete finite element equations obtained are assembled into a global form. The spatial derivatives at the nodes are replaced by finite difference operators and the discretized nonlinear algebraic system is solved by an iterative scheme. Solutions are obtained for the one-dimensional gasdynamics equation, the one-dimensional wave equation and Burger's model of turbulence. Agreement with other numerical and analytical solutions is excellent for the gasdynamics problem and satisfactory for the Burger equation in cases of small viscous effects.

Development of a preprototype thermoelectric integrated membrane evaporation subsystem for water recovery

A three-man urine water recovery preprototype subsystem using a new concept to provide efficient potable water recovery from waste fluids on extended duration space flights has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Low power, compactness, and gravity insensitive operation are featured in this vacuum distillation subsystem that combines a hollow fiber polysulfone membrane evaporator with a thermoelectric heat pump. Application and integration of these key elements have solved problems inherent in previous reclamation subsystem designs. The hollow fiber elements provide positive liquid/gas phase control with no moving parts other than a waste liquid recirculation pump and a product water withdrawal pump. Tubular membranes provide structural integrity, improving on previous flat sheet membrane designs. A thermoelectric heat pump provides latent energy recovery.

Integrated infrared detector arrays for low-background astronomy

Existing integrated infrared detector array technology is being evaluated under low-background conditions to determine its applicability in orbiting astronomical applications where extended integration times and photometric accuracy are of interest. Preliminary performance results of a 1 x 20 elements InSb CCD array under simulated astronomical conditions are presented. Using the findings of these tests, improved linear- and area-array technology will be developed for use in NASA programs such as the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility. For wavelengths less than 30 microns, extrinsic silicon and intrinsic arrays with CCD readout will be evaluated and improved as required, while multiplexed arrays of Ge:Ga for wavelengths in the range 30 to 120 microns will be developed as fundamental understanding of this material improves. Future efforts will include development of improved drive and readout circuitry, and consideration of alternate multiplexing schemes.

Bibliography on aerodynamics of airframe/engine integration of high-speed turbine-powered aircraft, volume 1

This bibliography was developed as a first step in the preparation of a monograph on the subject of the aerodynamics of airframe/engine integration of high speed turbine powered aircraft. It lists 1535 unclassified documents published mainly in the period from 1955 to 1980. Primary emphasis was devoted to aerodynamic problems and interferences encountered in the integration process; however, extensive coverage also was given to the characteristics and problems of the isolated propulsion system elements. A detailed topic breakdown structure is used. The primary contents of the individual documents are indicated by the combination of the document's title and its location within the framework of the bibliography.

A solution of one dimensional Fredholm integral equations of the second kind

Fredholm integral equations of the second kind of the one dimension are numerically solved. It is proven that the numerical solution converges to the exact solution of the integral equation. This is shown for periodic kernels and then extended to nonperiodic kernels. This development helps delineate a basic theory which has the potential of solving very complex problems.

An integrative approach to space-flight physiology using systems analysis and mathematical simulation

An approach was developed to aid in the integration of many of the biomedical findings of space flight, using systems analysis. The mathematical tools used in accomplishing this task include an automated data base, a biostatistical and data analysis system, and a wide variety of mathematical simulation models of physiological systems. A keystone of this effort was the evaluation of physiological hypotheses using the simulation models and the prediction of the consequences of these hypotheses on many physiological quantities, some of which were not amenable to direct measurement. This approach led to improvements in the model, refinements of the hypotheses, a tentative integrated hypothesis for adaptation to weightlessness, and specific recommendations for new flight experiments.
