Autonomous Flight Safety System Road Test

On February 3, 2005, Kennedy Space Center (KSC) conducted the first Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) test on a moving vehicle -- a van driven around the KSC industrial area. A subset of the Phase III design was used consisting of a single computer, GPS receiver, and UPS antenna. The description and results of this road test are described in this report.AFSS is a joint KSC and Wallops Flight Facility project that is in its third phase of development. AFSS is an independent subsystem intended for use with Expendable Launch Vehicles that uses tracking data from redundant onboard sensors to autonomously make flight termination decisions using software-based rules implemented on redundant flight processors. The goals of this project are to increase capabilities by allowing launches from locations that do not have or cannot afford extensive ground-based range safety assets, to decrease range costs, and to decrease reaction time for special situations.

Flight-test evaluation of civil helicopter terminal approach operations using differential GPS

A civil code differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) has been developed and flight-tested by the NASA Ames Research Center. The system was used to evaluate the performance of the DGPS for support of helicopter terminal approach operations. The airborne component of the DGPS was installed in a NASA helicopter. The ground-reference component was installed in a mobile van and equipped with a real-time VHF telemetry data link to transmit correction information to the aircraft system. An extensive series of tests was conducted to evaluate the performance of the system for several different configurations of the airborne navigation filter. This paper will describe the systems, the results of the flight tests, and the results of the posttest analysis.

2013 Metropolitan Area Planning Agency External Travel Survey

# 2013 Metropolitan Area Planning Agency External Travel Survey The 2013 Metropolitan Area Planning Agency (MAPA) External Travel Survey was conducted to measure and identify travel patterns into, within, and out of the greater Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area in Nebraska. MAPA sponsored the survey in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration, the Nebraska Department of Roads, and the Iowa Department of Transportation. ## Data Collection Agency MAPA conducted the survey. ## Methodology The purpose of the survey was to collect information and data needed as input for MAPA’s travel-demand model. The survey employed a combination of nine survey methods and data-collection activities, including Bluetooth technology, intercept surveys, postcard handouts, travel-time studies, vehicle classification counts, and a web-based survey. ## Survey Records Survey records include a total of 729 participants. ## Transportation Data This study provides Bluetooth records and supplementary data for 17,434 passenger trips and 3,123 commercial trips, accounting for 714,218 vehicle miles traveled. Transportation data are available as zipped files. [Download Winzip](http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm).

2017 National Household Travel Survey - Arizona Add-On

# 2017 National Household Travel Survey – Arizona Add-On The Arizona add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. ## Data Collection Agency The Federal Highway Administration conducted the NHTS and corresponding add-on surveys. ## Methodology This survey documents the demographic, attitudinal, and travel behavior for all members of 2,987 households, as collected from April 2016 to April 2017. Daily travel details provide insight into work and school commutes, non-emergency medical trips, shopping trips, and even how travel differs in the summer and on weekends as compared to a typical weekday when school is in session. When statistically weighted to adjust for survey biases, the data demographically represents all Americans and is appropriate for analysis at the national and census region levels. ## Survey Records Survey records include a total of 6,081 participants. ## Transportation Data The NHTS Arizona add-on data package contains a demographic and socioeconomic composition of 6,081 people from 2,987 households in Arizona, as well as detailed information on the travel behavior of each household for a designated 24-hour period. The survey logged more than 258,000 vehicle miles of travel by participants during 19,779 trips. For details on available data and variable definitions, see the [data dictionary](https://www.nrel.gov/media/docs/libraries/tsdc/data-elements-2017.xlsx?sfvrsn=ad09b18c_3).
