Large-scale coronal temperature and density distributions, 1984-1992

We characterize the temperature and the density structure of the corona utilizing spectrophotometric observations at different heights but at the same latitude during the descending phase of cycle 21 through the ascending phase of cycle 22. The data include ground-based intensity observations of the green (Fe XIV 5303) and red (Fe X 6374) coronal forbidden lines, photospheric magnetographs from the National Solar Observatory, Kitt Peak, and synoptic maps of white-light K-coronal polarized brightness from the High Altitude Observatory. A determination of plasma temperature, T, can be estimated from the intensity ratio Fe X/Fe XIV (where T is inversely proportional to the ratio), since both emission lines come from ionized states of Fe, and the ratio is only weakly dependent on density. Distributions of the electron temperature from the line ratio and the polarized brightness which yields electron density of the corona during the descending and the ascending phases of solar cycles 21 and 22 are presented. These data refer to structures of the corona which are relatively large scale, having a temporal coherence of at least two or more synoptic rotation periods, such as the streamer belts, the individual helmet streamers, and the larger coronal holes.

Research Opportunities in Nutrition and Metabolism in Space

The objectives of the Life Sciences Research Office (LSRO) study on nutrient requirements for meeting metabolic needs in manned space flights are as follows: review extant knowledge on the subject; identify significant gaps in knowledge; formulate suggestions for possible research; and produce a documented report of the foregoing items that can be used for program planning. In accordance with NASA's request for this study, the report focuses on issues of nutrition and metabolism that relate primarily to the contemplated United States Space Station, secondarily to the Shuttle Program as an orbital test bed for operational studies, and incidentally to scenarios for future long-term space flights. Members of the LSRO ad hoc Working Group on Nutrition and Metabolism were provided with pertinent articles and summaries on the subject. At the meeting of the Working Group, presentations were made by NASA Headquarters program staff on past experiences relative to space-flight nutrition and metabolism, as well as scenarios for future flights. The discussions of the ad hoc Working Group focused on the following: (1) metabolic needs related to work and exercise; (2) nutrients required to meet such needs; (3) food types, management, and records; and (4) nutritional amelioration or prevention of space-related physiological and behavioral changes.

Effect of Taper Ratio on the Low-speed Rolling Stability Derivatives of Swept and Unswept Wings of Aspect Ratio 2.61

Results of tests conducted in the 6-foot-diameter rolling-flow test section of the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of varying taper ratio on the rolling and static stability characteristics of a swept wing are presented; results are also given for the effects of varying taper ratio on an unswept wing and for the effects of sweep on a tapered wing. All the models were of aspect ratio 2.61 and had NACA 0012 sections normal to the quarter-chord line. Taper ratios of 1.00, 0.50, and 0.25 and sweep angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees were investigated.
