Measurement of shunt resistance and conduction band offset in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 solar cells through joint analysis of temperature and intensity dependence of open-circuit voltage and photoluminescence

Joint analysis studies of open-circuit voltage and photoluminescence intensity (PL-I) are reported for CuIn 1-x GaxSe 2 (CIGSe) solar cells. A range of compositions are investigated, including constant x=0.35 and x=0.55 as well as a graded composition profile having a minimum of x=0.25. Both the open circuit voltage and PL-I are measured as functions of temperature and illumination intensity. With these two measurements, a full model-based fitting of the temperature and illumination dependence allows extraction of the effects of window layer band offset and shunt resistance, in addition to bulk and interface recombination parameters. Finally, to quantitatively analyze the two distinct measurements jointly, the absolute PL-I is measured to obtain quasi-Fermi-level splitting.

Neutrino and Electromagnetic Signatures from Superluminous Supernovae: A Case Study for SN 2017egm

Superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) are rare transients that are ∼10–100 times more luminous than ordinary stellar explosions, reaching peak optical luminosities ∼10 44 –10 45 erg s −1 . The energy source powering SLSNe remains uncertain. In this work, we explore the multiwavelength and multimessenger signatures of the scenario in which SLSNe are powered by a newly born millisecond magnetar. We model the dynamical evolution and emission from the coupled system comprised of the magnetar, wind, nebula, and supernova ejecta, consistently evaluating the pair multiplicity of the wind and nebula regions, and the bulk wind Lorentz factor governing the e + − e − injection spectra in the nebula. We compute the thermal and nonthermal electromagnetic signatures, neutrino signatures, and investigate their detection prospects. For SN 2017egm, the nearest observed SLSNe, our prediction for high-energy gamma rays matches the recent detection by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. For neutrinos, using SN 2017egm a canonical SLSNe, we find that in the era of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, a stacking analysis with upcoming neutrino observatories can lead to 3σ detection significance of neutrino events from a population of SLSNe within a decade of operation.

Legacy Analysis of Milky Way Dwarf Spheroidal Satellite Galaxies: An Update

Studies of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data coincident with dwarf spheroidal satellite galaxies (dSphs) of the Milky Way have put the most stringent constraints on models of annihilating dark matter (DM) with candidate masses in the GeV–TeV range. Recent results found the presence of small, local significance excesses from these targets, at the 2σ–3σ level. However, these excesses disagree on the predicted properties of the DM candidate, and their significance vanishes when considering correction factors for the number of trials. In this work, we apply key improvements to the analysis of dSphs. We use stricter cuts on the data, implement a method to adaptively model the background, and assume an updated framework for DM annihilation. We find that our improved background modeling leads to a better agreement between the model and the data. This produces an increase in the local and global significance of the dSph excess compared to previous studies. Finally, we find that the DM properties obtained in this work are less dependent on the sample of dSphs being considered compared to previous studies, while remaining in agreement with the predictions from the Galactic center excess observed by Fermi/LAT and the antiproton excess observed by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02). Considering our improvements, a future significant increase in the number of dwarfs may lead to a definitive confirmation or exclusion of the DM interpretation of the Galactic center excess.

Improving FermiI Orbit Determination and Prediction in an Uncertain Atmospheric Drag Environment

Orbit determination and prediction of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope trajectory is strongly impacted by the unpredictability and variability of atmospheric density and the spacecrafts ballistic coefficient. Operationally, Global Positioning System point solutions are processed with an extended Kalman filter for orbit determination, and predictions are generated for conjunction assessment with secondary objects. When these predictions are compared to Joint Space Operations Center radar-based solutions, the close approach distance between the two predictions can greatly differ ahead of the conjunction. This work explores strategies for improving prediction accuracy and helps to explain the prediction disparities. Namely, a tuning analysis is performed to determine atmospheric drag modeling and filter parameters that can improve orbit determination as well as prediction accuracy. A 45 improvement in three-day prediction accuracy is realized by tuning the ballistic coefficient and atmospheric density stochastic models, measurement frequency, and other modeling and filter parameters.
